1 Farwell, Byron. MR. KIPLING'S ARMY.
W.W. Norton, New York, 1981, book club edition.
256 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w illustrations. "This is an upstairs-downstairs view of the Victorian-Edwardian army, one of the world's most peculiar fighting forces. The battles it fought are household words, but the idios yncracies and eccentricities of its soldiers and the often appalling conditions under which they lived have gone largely unrecorded. This book explores the lives of officers and men, their foibles, follies, and gallantry, their diversions, food a n d drink, and women, their discipline and their rewards. Brave, glorious, and outrageous, they took their fun where they found it. Full of 'beef, beer, and lust', the common soldier inhabitated a separate world from his upper-class officers. Ba rr ac ks and officers' mess were united only by their common loyalty to their regiments, and their regiments were as quirky as their men. Each regiment prided itself on its uniqueness; each was different in character and uniform from any other. So me eve n had their own marching pace. The author....spent fifteen years gathering material for this work, and he writes with appreciation and affection for this peculiar army and its soldiers." Book lightly cocked, a few very small areas of gl ue r esi due on boards, previous owner's bookplate on front pastedown. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds with a few tiny tears at top of spine, minor soiling and rubbing. Very Good/Very Good

2 Farwell, Byron. THE GURKHAS.
W.W. Norton, New York, 1990.
317 pp, 8vo (8 3/16" H), soft cover. ISBN 039330714X B&w photographs, reproductions, map. "The Gurkha regiments in the British Army are, quite simply, the finest infantrymen in the world. Recruited in the kingdom of Nepal since the early ninetee nth century, these short, wiry hillmen have served the kings and queens of Britain with such loyalty, tenacity, and incredible bravery that often the sound of their battle cry 'Ayo Gurkhali!' (roughly translated as 'Here come the Gurkhas!') has c a u s ed enemy soldiers to flee. The Gurkhas fought beside the British in the Indian Mutiny, in France and Mesopotamia during World War I, and in every theater during World War II. They have fought as well in countless small wars - 'the savage w ar s of p eace' - including the Northwestern Frontier of India, Malaya, Borneo, and most recently the Falkland Islands. Their courage is legendary. Since 1911, when they first became eligible, thirteen Gurkhas have been awarded the Victoria Cross , a n unm atc hed record. This book will tell who the Gurkhas are and where they come from. It will describe their manners, customs, and character, and their history as soldiers, with special attention to their unique skills and remarkable valor." In te rior - c lean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - Very minor rubbing. Near Fine
