1 Domenech (Galissa), Rafael and Perez Bueno, Luis. Translated from the Spanish by Grace Hardendorff Burr. ANTIQUE SPANISH FURNITURE. MEUBLES ANTIGUOS ESPANOLES. BILINGUAL EDITION / EDICION BILINGUE.
Bonanza, New York, 1965, reprint.
142 pp, 4to (11 3/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. 60 b&w plates. "The fame of Spanish furniture rests on the work of three centuries: the XV, XVI and XVII - lusty, dazzling years that brought vengeance on the Moors, the fires of the Inquisition , and the conquest of New Spain. The history of those years is written in their furniture. The Mudejar craftsmen who shaped the exquisitely inlaid chests and cabinets of the XV century were dispersed by the terror of the Holy Office or the swor d s of Castile. The XVI century was stamped by the aceticism of Philip II, but even he could not restrain the lust for luxury that marked the Spanish Renaissance. For these years saw the Conquistadors sweep across Mexico and Peru, plundering the al ta r s of Aztec and Inca for treasures that were melted down to be wrought into silver tables, or to gild the drawers and locks of varguenos. In the XVII century, even as the Empire crumbled toward collapse, the cabinetmakers of court and counry sid e f as hioned from walnut slabs and iron braces the austere dignity of the Spanish Baroque. It was the last blaze of the Spanish imagination. By the XVIII century Spain was a fourth-rate power, and her cabinetmakers abandoned their heritage in fav or o f t he alien styles of Chippendale and the ebenistes of the court of Louis XV. The great age of Spanish cabinetwork had ended." Previous owner's bookplate on front pastedown, tiny dint at top edge of rear board. Dust jacket has minor ed ge we ar/wr inkl ing, a few small light red dye marks on rear panel very slight darkening to spine, light rubbing, tiny scuff on rear hinge. Very Good/Very Good
