Hutchison, Bruce. CANADA'S LONELY NEIGHBOUR. Longmans, Green, Toronto, 1954, first edition in book form. 30 pp, 8vo (8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "This small book first appeared in article form in MacLean's and Life Magazines, under the title of 'A Dangerous European Luxury - Hating America". The author traces the roots of transatlantic misunder standing: the bitter anti-Americanism of Europeans, the exaggeration of the habits and ill manners of American soldiery and tourists in Europe, the ineffectualness of the Eisenhower Government, the contempt shown for Senator McCarthy (who has d o n e m ore harm for transatlantic friendship than anyone since George III), the misconception of American life given to the public in Britain's shoddy mass-circulation press, and America's rigid insistence on the American way of life. In the mi dd le o f t hi s tragedy of errors, privileged but often uncomfortable, Canada stands as interpreter. Mr. Hutchison, as an objective observer, is in an ideal position to analyze the misunderstandings that mar European-U.S. relations and to evaluat e t he imp or ta nce of Canada to both the New and the Old world." Tiny light foxing mark on free rear endpaper and preceeding page, very light edge wear, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has browning on spine and flap-folds, l ight so ilin g, lig ht w rinkling/tiny chips at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, a few very small watermarks - mainly on front panel, small ghost sticker mark on front panel, several very small closed tears - one with crease. McClelland and Stewart, Toronto, (1952). 272 pp, large 8vo (9 1/8" H), hard cover - no dust jacket. "...designed mainly as a guide to what Canadians have said in the past about themselves or things Canadian, or from a Canadian point of view. It contains quotations and phrases from Canadian authors and sources on a variety of subjects, some of them exclus i v e t o Canada, and also quotations from non-Canadians on subjects distinctly Canadaian." Hutchison, Bruce. Illustrated by Richard Bennett. Edited by Hervey Allen and Carl Carmer. THE FRASER. RIVERS OF AMERICA SERIES. Clarke, Irwin, Toronto, 1950, first edition. 368 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w drawings, map. "Shaped like a gigantic fishhook stuck into the Pacific Ocean, the mighty Fraser is one of the most important rivers of North America, politically, economically and historically . Compelling the reader's interest with the power and vigour of his narrative, Bruce Hutchison explores the Fraser's romantic history as one of Canada's two main channels of civilization. The Fraser's story is that of British Columbia and its p e o p le, and (the author) shows that it provides some of the richest yet least known chapters in Canadian history. These he unrolls in an unforgettable panorama, from the days of Spanish discovery to the story of the city of Vancouver, the river's m os t remarkable product. In its gold, its steamboating, its fur; as a fisherman's paradise, and as the largest untapped source of electrical power in North America - the story of the Fraser is one of colour and high drama." Light browning on en dpa per s and on edges of text block, light edge wear, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has several small tears, light edge wear/wrinkling, light to moderate browning, minor soiling. Very Good/Very Good- Price:
