Bishop, Edward. THE WOODEN WONDER: THE STORY OF THE DE HAVILLAND MOSQUITO. Max Parrish, London, 1959, first edition. 168 pp, small 8vo (7 7/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs. "Sir Geoffrey de Havilland and his fellow director, Mr. C.C. Walker, drove back to the factory in dejected silence after a fruitless conference at the Air Ministry in the Aut umn of 1938. After a while, Sir Geoffrey turned to Walker and said 'We'll do it anyway'. From that courageous decision in the dark days of Munich sprang one of the most romantic and exciting stories associated with aviation and World War II. F r o m the prototype built in the grounds of a moated manor house, this schoolboy's dream of a full-sized aircraft largely made of balsa wood went on to confound all its critics, and to shows itself capable of absolutely any task assigned to it. Th e ex pl oits associated with it are in consequence varied beyond belief, with perhaps the most exciting ones to read being the pin-point low-level raids in broad daylight. There could be no better tribute to British inventiveness, enterprise and co ur age th an the unique story of the RAF's 'Wooden Wonder'." Small area of previous owner's notation blacked out on free front end paper, very light browning to edges of text block, very small bump at top corner of boards. Dust jacket has bee n pr ice -cli pped , has small chips and tears at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor rubbing/soiling, one very small scuff, very light browning. Very Good-/Good+ Price:
