Fonck, Rene. Preface by Marshal Ferdinand Foch. Foreword by Charles J. Biddle. Edited by Stanley M. Ulanoff. ACE OF ACES. AIR COMBAT CLASSICS SERIES. Doubleday, Garden City, New York, 1967, first U.S. edition. 164 pp, 8vo (8 3/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs. "Born in 1894, Rene Fonck was a young French farm boy with a dream of righing the wrongs that had been wreaked on his homeland by the Franco-Prussian War of 1870. He would be the avenger, the savior of France, riding to victory on a white charger, lance in hand, like Joan of Arc. It's a far cry from a young boy's dream of glory to the world of reality, but Rene Fonck made his dream come true. Before World War I was o v e r h e had not only become the French Ace-of-Aces, but the leading Allied fighter pilot as well. He had 75 confirmed victories to his credit, more than any other Allied flier, and only five less than the infamous Baron von Richtofen, the flambo ya nt G e rm an Ace. But Fonck often flew alone, and then well behind enemy lines so there was no one of confirm many of his successes. His own estimate is a total of 127 German aircraft shot down. Rene Fonck's white charger was a Spad 'avion de ch ass e' or fi ghter plane, his lance - a Vickers machine gun. In prose as concise and dramatic as his flying ability he tells in 'Ace of Aces' of unique wartime adventues that will probably never again be equalled. The reader is carried aloft as F onck av eng es t he death of the fabled Georges Guynemer, as he lands a plane completely riddled with bullets, as he dives to destroy a German experimental fighter plane, leaving its five escorts bewildered in the skies. His is an exciting an d dra matic sto ry o f a n ever-to-be-forgotten era in history. In adition to Rene Fonck's stirring autobiography, the book contains an introduction by aviation expert Stanley M. Ulanoff, plus 24 pages of new photographs and diagrams of the variou s Fren ch and Germ an ai rcraft discussed in the book. Also included are comprehensive lists of each country's leading aces, both Allied and Axis, and a helpful appendix."
