Painting is not an entertainment or an occupation for him; it is a communicative way of life. The pai ntings have been chosen to show the range of the work produced during the years 1910 to 1968. Writing was, for him, a means of clarifying thought, of sorting out observations, and of sifting ideas. The text is made up of selections from his w r i t i n gs - published articles, notebooks written between the years 1920 and 1960, and 'Contrasts', a volume of poems published in 1922."
