1 Turnbull, Frederick Gower. Edited by Bernadette Rule. REMEMBER ME TO EVERYBODY: LETTERS FROM INDIA, 1943-1949.
West Meadow Press, Hamilton, Ontario, 1996.
266 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), soft cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs. When a brother and sister cleared out their parent's home in England, they find a box of letters their older brother, Fred Turnbull, had written to his mother, "from the time he l eft for India in 1943, until he was killed in a riot in 1949, pushed alive into a furnace at the steel company near Calcutta, where he worked." The sister brought the box back to Canada with her and found that the letters "provide a carefully o b s e r ved record of the time and place, and of the people there, (reading) like a compelling novel. Because (Fred) was neither part of the government nor the military, and because he was not rich, the letters reveal a new facet of what it was t o be E ng li sh in India at the time of Independence. Whether he is talking about politics or romance, history or culture, Fred's writing combines passion with clear-eyed judgement....his opinions and anecdotes shed light from a new direction on m od ern da y I ndi a and Pakistan. They are both current and richly of their time. The fifty years it has taken to bring these letters to print dissolve like magic in the freshness of Fred Turnbull's voice." Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling, one tin y ed ge t ear. Fine/Very Good+
