Barthorp, Michael. AFGHAN WARS AND THE NORTH-WEST FRONTIER, 1839-1947. Cassell, (London, 2002), reprint. 184 pp, large 8vo (9 13/16" H), laminated, flexible covers. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions, maps. "British forces in India were in almost constant battle with Afghan hill tribes, the most implacable guerilla fighter in h istory. 'Frontier Warfare' was one of the most important tasks for the British army in India. It was a strange war fought to its own rules. Prisoners were seldom taken by either side. Over the years, the British introduced armoured vehicles an d aircraft, but the key features of warfare on the Afghan frontier remained the same from Victorian times to World War II and the British withdrawal from the sub-continent in 1947. From the army immortalized by Kipling to the end of the British Em pi r e in India, Michael Barthorp reveals how the British dealt with Afghanistan." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - minor bump at corners of covers, very small bumps along bottom edges of covers and one on fo re- ed ge of rear covers, specks of light color offset on rear cover - probably from another book. Barthorp, Michael. CRATER TO THE CREGGAN: A HISTORY OF THE ROYAL ANGLIAN REGIMENT 1964-1974. Leo Cooper, London, 1976, first edition. 160 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), soft cover. ISBN 085052229 Color frontispiece, b&w photographs, maps, 'family tree'. "In the early 1960s a new concept for the organisation of the Infantry was devised - the voluntary formation of Large Regiments. This is the story of the first: the Royal Anglian Regiment, with four regular battalions, formed from the seven county regiments of East Anglia and the East Midlands. These regiments, each with long and highly individual histories and traditions, made a decision to unite, a step which required goodwill, tolerance, trust and determination to made the union succeed. In some quarters, the Large Regiment concept was a nail in the coffin of the treasured regimental system; to others, it was a means of retaining the essential features of that system while withstanding the stresses of change in the Army as a whole. The Royal Anglians have had ten years in which to test their experiment, years of futher reductions in the Army, of training as ai rpo r table and mechanized infantry, keeping the peace in distant garrisons, as United Nations troops, and above all the years of bullet and bomb in Aden and Ulster. This book describes how the dangers and difficulties of those years have welded to geth er a new regiment of modern infantry, highly trained and professional yet still conscious of inherited traditions. Chiefly, it is a picture of the contemporary British infantryman, disciplined and brave in action, patient and cheerful in adve rsity , a new breed in many ways but with all the best qualities of his forefathers and, in a confused world, a figure of hope and reassurance." Very faint cigarette odor, small soft bump to top corner of pages, light wear at top of front hinge/sp ine, l ight rubbing, fore-edge of front cover is lightly faded, minor soiling to bottom of textblock, very light browning to edges of textblock, tiny speck on top of textblock, very faint crease and slight fading on spine.
