ISBN 0600569764 "Featuring 140 aircraft and over 850 full colour illustrations and photographs, this book traces the story of military aircraft markings and camouflage from World War I to the present day. Each illustration has been carefully selected to show how the markings and colour schemes have evolved, influenced by the aircraft's military role and mission capability. Here you will find some of the world's most famous fighting machine s , from the Avro 504 to the Panavia Tornado and the Fokker DR1 to the McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle. There are transports like the Lockheed C-130 as well as helicopters such as Sikorsky's UH-60 Black Hawk. All are shown in a variety of military c ol ou r schemes. The fighter role in the early years often combined bomber and reconnaissance tasks. It was only later the specific function of an aircraft in relation to its environment became an issue. The bomber mission - both night and day - pr odu ce d some subtle changes of pattern over the years, as did the interdiction role. Over the sea, maritime aircraft also needed to be given schemes relative to their areas of operation. Special colour schemes are also illustrated and discuss ed i nclu din g the 'Tiger Meet' together with the special operations camouflage, often applied for a military exercise or air show."
