"She was born of well-to-do parents in turn-of-the-century Poland; at age fourteen she set her sights on the handsomest bachelor in Warsaw; she married him two years later in fashionable St. Petersbug, Russia. The next year, 1917, the young husband was arrested by the Bolsheviks, and Tamara braved the Russion Revolution to free him, making judicious u se of her good looks to secure the necessary favors from the necessary officials. The couple fled to Paris, and the reign of Tamara de Lempicka commenced. She set out to make herself into an artist and worked day and night perfecting her craf t . S he painted her fellow refugees, Eastern Europe's deposed nobility as well as artists, writers, entertainers, and scientists. Her reward was critical acclaim, social celebrity, and considerable wealth. The threat of a second world war sent h er p a ck ing to America, where she reveled among the producers, directors, and stars of Hollywood and, later, the wealthy of New York. Finally, she fled to a well-heeled retirement in Mexico. The later career of Tamara de Lempicka was eclipsed by the a d ven t of Abstract Expressionism and her own middle age. Through the 1950s and 1960s her work was ignored, yet she continued to paint. In the 1970s she was approached by an aspiring Parisian gallery owner who mounted an exhibition that cam e as a re vela tion. Gradually she was rediscovered by a world that had come to appreciate once again the delights of both Art Deco and of figurative painting. Portraits that had lain in storage for as much as three decades today fetch prices in exces s o f t wo hu ndred thousand dollars. Recently, her life was even the subject of a hit play..."
