1 Infield, Glenn B. DISASTER AT BARI.
Macmillan, New York, 1971, first edition.
301 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs. "In late November, 1943, Field Marshal Albert Kesselring, commander in chief of the German troops in Italy, desperately sought a means of slowing the advance of the British Eighth Army and the organization of Doolittle's Fifteenth Air Force. His goal - a paralyzing air strike at a strategic target. But where? A Luftwaffe reconnaissance pilot had reported the harbor of Bari - the port for incoming supplies and men - conges ted with Allied ships. Among the ships that awaited unloading in the crowded harbor was the American merchantman 'John Hervey'. She carried a top-secret cargo - one hundred tons of mustard gas. When the Luftwaffe struck the night of December 2, t he 'John Hervey' exploded, spewing her deadly contents over both town and harbor. There were no survivors to tell what she carried---" Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, fading of color at top edge of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear/w rinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap folds, light browning and some sun fading on spine, very light rubbing. Very Good/Very Good-

2 Infield, Glenn B. THE POLTAVA AFFAIR. A RUSSIAN WARNING: AN AMERICAN TRAGEDY.
Macmillan, New York, (1973), Ist edition.
265 pp, 8vo (8 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photos. "On the night of June 21, 1944, the Luftwaffe attacked the American air base at Poltava. Unchallenged by the Red Air Force (who were to have provided all air defense), the Germans bo mbed the field for more than an hour, damaging or destroying more than sixty B-17s, along with virtually the entire supply of fuel, ammunition, and material at Poltava. Why did this tragedy occur? Infield has unearthed evidence that it proba b l y h a ppened on orders from the Kremlin. Stalin, he maintains, was looking not toward the immediate goal of defeating the Axis powers, but toward his own long-range plans for world domination: the Soviet dictator saw 'Operation Frantic' as a wa y of ma ki ng U.S. forces look impotent, while still making possible the continued flow of American military equipment and know-how. As a result, the hard work of many courageous and resourceful men - captured in Infield's astute character sket che s and viv id combat narratives - was largely wasted...(Infield also writes that) the Poltava affair was a clear warning of the rigid polarization that would mark the post-war world." Previous owners name inked out on free front endpaper. Dust jac ke t is pric e c lipped, light to moderate edge wear, a few small closed tears - some with creases, 1 1/2" x 1/4" chip at top of rear panel, very slight fading to spine, light rubbing, crease down front flap, stain at bottom inside edge of spi ne.
