Nevins, Allan. THE WAR FOR THE UNION. VOLUME IV: THE ORGANIZED WAR TO VICTORY, 1864-1865. Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1971, book club reprint. 448 pp, large 8vo (9 1/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w illustrations. "Here we have the story of th slow and sometimes agaonizing progress of the Union armies to victory. Grant and Sherman and Lincoln dominate. On the political front, Linc oln is reelected and the Union becomes even more solidly organized; on the military front, Grant sets his bulldog teeth in the neck of his great adversary Lee, and Sherman cuts a swath of desolation through the richest parts of the South. Victo r y w hen it comes at Appomattox, is a quiet victory, but almost at once the murder of President Lincoln and the succession of President Andrew Johnson present the nation with new problems as terrible if not as immediate as the battles. The work c lo se s w ith an account of the demobilization of the armies and the nation's return to the pursuits of peace which, despite the war, are seen to have widened in scope and to be filled with new opportunities." Dust jacket has some areas of minor e dge we ar /wr inkling. Fine/Near Fine Price:
