1 Watts, Alan W. MYTH AND RITUAL IN CHRISTIANITY.
New York Vanguard Press Hard Cover Very Good Good-
262 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w illustrations. "Professor Watts has approached his task of re-assessing and re-interpreting the Christian story with sincerity and great acumen. He makes it clear that its essential character can never be fully understood in terms of the 'reverent remembering of a past history', but only as the 're-living of a timeless truth'. This truth, he maintains, is 'much more profound than the mere facts which once happened' and invests the story with the 'tremendous dignity of myth'. For, for him, the word myth does not denote what is 'untrue' or 'unhistorical', but that 'complex of stories which human beings regards as demonstrations of the inner meaning of the universe and of human life'. Under the clear lens of his inquiring and acute mind, not only do we see how the complicated pattern of Christian ritual has evolved from events recorded in the Old and New Testaments, but much of the symbolism of other religions, much of the thought of philosophers and poets down the ages seem to fall miraculously into place within the overall scheme of things. Thus, we are presented not only with a penetrating analysis of the meaning of Christian symbolism, but also with a philosophy of life which will appeal to thinking men and women, both inside and outside the faith. This stimulating book is more likely to fire the imagination than a host of pious utterances by prelates or dogmatic assertions by those who are lacking in faith."
