It describes some five hundred towns and buildings which En gland's sovereigns and their families have visited or lived in over twelve hundred years, from Offa of Mercia in the eighth century to the wedding of the Prince of Wales in the twentieth. Also recorded are many memorable visits by foreign royal t y , some of whom lived in England when exiled from their homelands. The entries include the favourite royal homes of ten dynasties, from Tamworth to Sandringham; sinister castles such as Berkeley, Pontefract and Tutbury; vanished palaces like Cl ar en do n , Sheen and Woodstock; small towns steeped in history like Ludlow, Marlborough and Tewkesbury; mansions whose owners spent a fortune entertaining Elizabeth I; and smaller houses that sheltered Charles II as he sought escape to France.
