1 Taylor, John W.R., ed. (Guy Gilpatric, Igor Sikorsky, Floyd Gibbons, Clayton Knight, Hanna Reitsch, Quentin Reynolds, Kenneth Poolman, Jules Roy, Elleston Trevor, Antoine De St.-Exupery, Pierre Clostermann, Gerald Bowman, Walter Dornberger, et al.) BEST FLYING STORIES.
Faber and Faber, London, 1956, first edition.
315 pp, 8vo (8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "(C)ontains stories on almost every aspect of aviation. They range from fact to fiction, peace to war, gliders to rockets, from the ice-cold stratosphere miles above the burning Californian Desert to the frigid wastelands of Earth's surface in the Antarctic. They have one thing only in common - that they are, as the title of the book implies, among the best flying stories ever written, anywhere in the world, in the first exciting half-century o f powered flight. Their authors include not only famous writers, but men like Igor Sikorsky, the great aircraft designer, and General Dornberger, scientist in charge of Germany's wartime V-2 rocket development, women like Hanna Reitsch, who flig h t tested rocket-fighters, and Jacqueline Cochran, first woman to fly faster than sound. None of these stories appeared in the original 'Best Flying Stories', which we published before the days of jet propulsion and Kamikazef, and before the 'sou nd b a rrier' became at first dreaded and then abolished by aircraft designers. Each story in this new anthology is put into perspective against the vast background of flying history by a short introductory note from the Editor, who has himself wr itt en mo re than thirty books and innumerable magazine articles on aviation." small area of soiling on front pastedown, very light edge wear, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, slight browning to edges of boards. dust jacket has been price-c lipp ed, ha s several small archivally taped tears and chips, closed tear and light browning on spine, light browning and a few very small stains on rear panel, now in mylar sleeve. Very Good-/Good+
