2 Miller, Robert A. AUGUST 1944: THE CAMPAIGN FOR FRANCE.
Presidio, Novato, CA, 1988.
280 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0891413162 B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "August 1944 was a crucial turning point in World War II: the fate of the Axis powers was sealed on the plains of France during these 31 days. It was a month of bewildering activity: rapid buildup of forces, dramatic changes in strategy, unparalleled movement of forces, the coming of age of the American armies, and the flowering of the concept of unified Allied command. In this day -by-day account, the story of this remarkable month is told through the eyes of participants on both the Allied and German sides. The action is followed through the bocage country of Normandy, the breakout at Avranches, the push toward Le Ma n s , t h e encirclement of Falaise, the invasion of southern France, the taking of Paris, the dash across northern France. It is a war of movement, of sweeping envelopment and lightning advances. The Allies move across France in what General Pa tt on d e sc ri be s as 'probably the fastest and biggest pursuit in history'. The Germans endure terrible punishment as they gather their dwindling forces, held hostage by delays and unrealistic orders emanating from Hitler's Wolf Lair, 1,000 mil es awa y." Pag es are very lightly browned, very light browning and faint foxing marks on edges of text block, one small corner bump, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very light wear and light wrinkling at top/bottom of spi ne and flap - fold s, very light rubbing, tiny dint on fron hinge. Very Good-/Very Good
