1 Deighton, Len. Introduction by A.J.P. Taylor. FIGHTER: THE TRUE STORY OF THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN.
Castle, Edison, NJ, 2000, reprint.
261 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0785812083 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, maps/battle plans, cartoons, drawings. "Drawing on the mastery of technical detail he displayed so brilliantly in 'Bomber' (the story of an RAF bombing raid), (Deighton) gives us an altogether factual and comprehensive picture of the men, the machines, the strategies (and the blunders), and the events on both sides. He shows us the British squandering precious fighter planes in a futile effort to halt the German blitzkrieg in France, and the Germans refusing to believe in the effectiveness of British radar. He compares the fire power, combat tactics, and ground control, analyzing the performance of both the planes (the Messerschmitt broke up in mid-air more often than the Spitfire) and the pilots (men such as the fabled Douglas Bader, who flew better with two artificial legs than other men with two real ones; or 'Onkel Theo' Osterkamp, a WWI German ace who became an ace in WWII as well, until he was finally ordered off combat flying at the age of forty-eight). We see the British General Staff divided against itself (after the Battle, the man most responsible for the British victory - Sir Hugh Dowding, Commander in Chief, Fighter Command - was dismissed); the German High Command, unsure of its objectives; exaggerated British claims (and an almost fatal shortage of pilots); and German technical superiority that was continually undercut by Nazi incompetence." Minor wrinkle at top of front hinge. Dust jacket has light wrinkle at top of front hinge, minor rubbing. Near Fine/Near Fine

2 Taylor, A.J.P. Edited with an introduction by Chris Wrigley. FROM NAPOLEON TO THE SECOND INTERNATIONAL: ESSAYS ON NINETEENTH-CENTURY EUROPE.
Hamish Hamilton, London, 1993, first edition.
426 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0241134447 "A.J.P. Taylor (1906-90) was one of Britain's most popular and authoritative historians. He wrote definitive works of British and diplomatic history which also became bestsellers, and was much admired for the many television lectures he gave - which he delivered without notes or visual aids and which ended precisely on time. His essays have always been recognized as amongst his best work and therefore some of the finest historical writing of the last forty years. They provide short and incisive assessments of major historical figures and issues. Combining essays from earlier collections with pieces previously unpublished in volume form, this book brings together the best of Taylor's essays on nineteenth-century British and continental European history, including pieces on Napoleon, Metternich, 1848, Bismarck, Disraeli, Parnell and the Second International." Wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wear, wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, 1" taped tear at bottom of front hinge, very light rubbing. Very Good+/Very Good
