Phaidon, London, 1970, 2nd edition (Volume One), 1970, Ist edition (Volume Two). 221 pp, 279 pp, 4to (11 3/4" H), hard covers in dust jackets. Two volume set. Profusely illustrated with color and b&w reproductions. "The military drawings and paintings in the collection of Her Majesty The Queen are some 3,000 in number, and th ey comprise an impressive record of military dress of both British and foreign armies from the end of the seventeenth century to the early part of the twentieth. The plate volume contains a general introduction on the origins of the collecti o n a n d the scope and arrangement of the catalogue, and nearly 500 illustrations, several of them in colour. Some sixty artists are represented. Among the most important are: David Morier, who about 1751 painted forty-five canvases depicting e ve ry re gi me n t of the British Army as well as numerous canvases showing soldiers of foreign armies which had fought with the Allied Forces in the War of the Austrian Succession: the Dighton family, consisting of Robert, and his sons, Robert jun ior , D e nis an d R ic hard, who worked at the end of the eighteenth and beginning of the nineteenth centuries; and A.J. DuBois Drahonet, commissioned by William IV in 1830 to record the uniforms of the British Army of the time. Other artists of sign ific an ce a re D irk Lan gedyk, his son Jan Antony Langedyk, N.D. Finart, A.I. Sauerweid, J.B. Seele, Eugene Lami, Henry Alken, George H. Thomas and Orlando Norie. The catalogue volume contains detailed notes on each of the 3,000 items in the coll ectio n. It a lso i nclu des 23 plates, 2 of which are in colour, and a comprehensive index." Faint erased pencil marks on free front endpapers, minor edge wear to boards, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spines. Volume one has a slight bump to to p edge of rear board. Vol ume two has areas of light color fading and slight roughness at top of panels at hinges - due to liquid dampness on dust jacket, tiny foxing mark on top of textblock. Dust jackets have very light to light edge w rinklin g, ligh t ru bbing, minor soilin g, a few tiny scuffs, slight browning to spine and edges. Volume two has a liquid stain at top of spine/hinges/panel area with some areas of surface paper loss and color offset from boards on inside surfac e. Extr a shippi ng re quired.
