1 Spencer-Smith, Jenny. (A-J Dubois Drahonet). Foreword by Ian G Robertson. Note by Keith Laing. PORTRAITS FOR A KING: THE BRITISH MILITARY PAINTINGS OF A-J DUBOIS DRAHONET (1791-1834).
National Army Museum, London, 1990, first edition.
96 pp, 4to (11 11/16" H), soft cover. ISBN 0901721212 Colour and b&w reproductions. "In 1831 the French society painter, Alexandre-Jean Dubois Drahonet, was commissioned by King William IV to paint a series of pictures illustrating recent changes in the uniforms and weapons on the British Army. This catalogue details the 92 pictures in the collection of Her Majesty The Queen, normally housed in the Private Apartments at Windsor Castle, with six other British military works by Dra h o n e t s e e n together for the first time. Known on the Continent as a portrait painter to elegant society, Drahonet was unusual in taking portraits from life - not only of the grandest of staff officers but also humble soldiers, including th re e li tt le ch il dr en from the Royal Military Asylum, the school for Army children. For the first time, the careers of these men have been researched in detail and they provide a fascinating insight into life in pre-Victorian Britain. Drahon et' s wor k i s v i rtu all y u nkn own in Britain and this catalogue accompanies the first exhibition to show his work in this country." Interior - very light cigarette odor, otherwise clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - very l ight edg e we ar , ve ry l ight rub bing, one very small corner crease. Very Good
