1 Barclay, James A. (Signed) Foreword by Geoffrey S. Cornish. THE TORONTO TERROR.
Sleeping Bear, Chelsea, MI, 2000, first edition.
207 pp, small 4to (10 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1886947937 B&w illustrations. SIGNED ON TITLE PAGE: "JIM BARCLAY". **Underneath the signature are a series of three gift inscriptions in other hands.** "In spite of the fact that he designed 145 courses over a 30-year period, not many golfers outside of Canada know who Stanley Thompson was. They may have heard of Banff, Jasper Park Lodge, St. George's, and Highland Links because these are four of the greatest golf courses i n the world. But it's doubtful that they know who designed them. It was Stanley Thompson. In 1928, legendary golf architect Dr. Alister MacKenzie - designer of Cypress Point, Augusta National, Royal Melbourne and Crystal Downs, among others - sa id that the golf course at Jasper Park Lodge was the best he'd ever seen. Robert Trent Jones, Sr. got his start with Thompson in 1930, and went on to become perhaps the greatest course designer ever. He said Thompson was one of the giants of h i s p rof e ssion. Everyone who knew him said he was larger than life. He loved cigars, 15-ounce steaks, and whiskey. He is said to have made three separate fortunes and lost each one. He liked to wear fedoras and three-piece suits with a watch ch ain hook ed into his vest pockets. Under his arm he would carry a briefcase, in his hand a cane. While building a course in Minnesota in 1951, a newspaper reporter described him as 'a fabulous little gentleman with a red face and spike-pointed ca ne s eat'. H e and his brothers were also some of the best golfers that Canada has ever known. Jim Barclay's biography of Stanley Thompson is a tribute to one of golf's all-time great architects and great characters." Waviness to edges of te xt b lock, tiny dint on bottom edge of rear board, small bump at bottom corner of both boards. Dust jacket has three creases (one soft) at top corner of front flap, very light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of hinges and flap-folds, minor rubbi ng. V ery Go od/Ve ry Good
