From the Foreword, "After five years of devoted labour, Lieut.-Colonel Nicholls has compiled a book which deals with every problem that a Medical Officer in the Field may have to solve....It is based primarily on experiences gained on the Western Front during the Great War, and although the conditions obtaining and the m a t e r i a l a v ailable on that Front differed widely from those found elsewhere, it is all to the good that we should be encouraged to strive for a standard of efficiencey which, I believe, had never before been reached...."
