"...covers the early development and growth of ukiyo-e paintings as a vigorous expression of the life of the townsmen of sixteenth- and seventeent h-century Japan...The world of the gay quarters, courtesans and women of pleasure, artisans, acrobats, exotically garbed foreigners - all are caught in these ukiyo-e paintings. The paintings reproduced here in sixty-four full-color pages are most l y by unknown 'town-painters' of the time and also include works by Moronobu, Kaigetsudo Ando and Miyagawa Chosun, who are known for their achievements in designing prints as well.
