801 Broome, Jack, Captain. SERVICES WRENDERED.
William Kimber, London, (1974).
128 pp, 8vo, hard cover in dust jacket. Profusely illustrated with cartoons in black, white, blue and red. "Records of World War II are incomplete without a tribute to the 'Fighting Services Title-Abbreviating Department', and the inspired minds t herein which christened the Women's Royal Naval Service the WRENS. Surely the dedicated brood - such invaluable handmaidens to Britannia in her wave-ruling activities - owes something to such a delightful title. Captain Jack Broome also feels i n d e bted to the Department for enabling him to call his gay, witty book of illustrated verses about these fledglings 'Services Wrendered'...In their many roles, in dockyards, on parade grounds, driving cars, teleprinters, or motorboats with such e nt hu si asm and apparent awe for naval tradition, gold braid and authority, there remained that beautifully balanced, built-in, not-so-subservient subservience..." 185 pp, large 8vo (9 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs. ISBN 0869781790 "Apart from its importance as an historical narrative the story told in these pages by a 22-year-old soldier has the unique quality of experience freshly ca ptured...the truth of a soldier's life in the critical battles fought in North Africa in 1941-42. It is a personal view of war with its boredom, its moments of terror, of tenderness and humour and its final realisation that war is not a glor i o u s g a me. It is written from the limited viewpoint of a young N.C.O. with his self-doubt, his fantasies and his moments of despair. It chronicles the handful of men around him...a section of mortarmen, griping, idle, insubordinate...extraor di na ri ly li gh t-hearted, never failing when courage was demanded - and finally dying together in the great and bloody battle of El Alamein which is the climax of the diary. Told in a day-to-day, sometimes hour-by-hour account, (this) is a book th at wil l t o uch a responsive chord in the heart of every man who has borne arms - in any army...The diarist has edited the original here and there and added notes which give a picture of the acutal military situation, often unknown to the writ er a t t he t ime. 392 pp, 7 3/4" H, soft cover. ISBN 0330376721 B&w plates. "1918 was probably the most dramatic and decisive year in British military history. In the spring there was a fear that Britain might have to evacuate her troops from the continent and lo se the war. In the summer came the great turnaround, and by autumn the German armies began to retreat. In November 1918 the First World War was over. Pan, London, 1997.
380 pp, 7 3/4" H, soft cover. ISBN 0330352202 B&w plates, maps. "This book offers a remarkably fresh perspective on the bitterly fought 1916 campaign; it also describes the later battles of the Somme in the Great War's final year, 1918. Using hi therto unpublished evidence from the archieves of the Imperial War Museum, it tells its powerful and dramatic story through the letters and diaries of those who were there. (The author) has woven the many and varied accounts of well over a hund r e d participants - mainly British, but with not few Germans - into a rich tapestry of experience, so that the book reads less like a conventional history and more like a war novel. The characters come from almost every rank, from general to ordi na ry s o ldier, from a captain who could write, 'It's a marvellous war', or 'Hardship be damned! It's all one long blaze of glory', to a private whose attitude was, 'There is not much glory these days in dying for your country'." Interior - clean an d t igh t with no previous ownership marks. So says Harry Bruce in this affectionate tribute to the province's past. His careful research has yielded an ample store of records, l e t t e r s , folksongs, and anecdotes that reveal the lives behind the images of coves and highlands, ships and lighthouses, mills, churches, and homesteads that are captured in the photographs of Chic Harris." Albatros, Berkhamsted, 1994.
36 pp, 11 5/8" H, soft cover (stapled in wraps). ISBN 0948414618 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, technical drawings/plans, colour profiles. "The Sopwith Snipe is firmly lodged in the minds of most WWI aeroplane enthusiasts due to the epic one-sided combat fought by Major William Barker on October 27 1918 in which he brought down four Fokker D.VIIs, an action that resulted in a well-earned Victoria Cross for the Canadian pilot. The Snipe had few other opportunities for glory; No .43 Squadron was the first unit to be equipped and made its first Snipe patrol on September 23 1918. Within five weeks nearly 100 Snipes were in France and No.208's Camels were in the process of being replaced by Snipes as the Armistice was declar e d. In the immediate post-war period Snipes served with a dozen RAF Squadrons, 532 being recorded on charge by 1921, and the type soldiered on until 1928 when it was officially declared obsolete. Despite its necessarily limited role in the first ai r war the Snipe has been a popular choice for modellers and subject of at least two previous monographs and a nubmer of magazine articles. The 46th DATAFILE, however, offers the most comprehensive selection of illustrations on the type yet publi she d in one volume and contains a great deal of information hitherto unrecorded." Hastings House, New York, 1955.
263 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs. "A financial disaster prevented (Sir Michael Bruce) from following the family tradition of becoming an officer in the crack Royal Regiment known as 'The Gunners', so he enlisted i n the British South African Police. At seventeen, he shot his first man; at eighteen he hunted a double-murderer across the velds of Rhodesia. By the time he was twenty-four he had fought (and was twice wounded) at ill-fated Gallipoli and on t h e w estern front through the Great War of 1914-19. Excitement dogged his footsteps as he sailed round the Horn in a windjammer; fought in a Brazilian revolution; crossed the Andes on foot; was nearly killed in a stampede of wild cattle; and was th e s ol e survivor of a gold-seeking hunt in the Amazon. Back in England, jobless, he did a stint as a reporter on a gossip 'sheet'; became a stunt actor, then press agent, in the movies; and in 1938, on the continent, established an underground for J ew s f leeing from Hitler's persecution, subsequently himself falling into the hands of the Gestapo. At Dunkirk in World War II, Sir Michael ferried British soldiers across the Channel, then got into the RAF - and into more hair-raising inci dent s.. .." Crowood, Marlborough, 1998, first edition.
223 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1861261349 Many b&w photographs. "Universally acknowledged as representing the British national character, the Bulldog can trace its ancestry back to Roman times. With the prohibition on bullbaiting in the nineteenth century came a decline in the popularity of the Bulldog, almost to the point of extinction. The breed was kept alive by a few dedicated fanciers and has now adapted itself to domesticity and become an affectio n a t e companion and an ideal household pet. Whilst Bulldogs are far from vicious, they can display great courage in protecting their owners, families and property should the need arise. This detailed book traces the origins of the Bulldog and c om pa re s t he conformation of the Bulldog in the early years with today's standard. The author provides clear information on what to look for when choosing a puppy, care, management and breeding. There is also a section on holistic medicines for th e p rev en ti on and cure of common ailments and diseases. Readers will learn the correct way to show the dog, and gain useful insights into the world of judging. Packed with interesting and useful information for those thinking of buying a pu ppy, or owne rs new and old, (this) is a must for all lovers of the breed." University of British Columbia Press, Vancouver, (1982).
151 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "This book is the first in Western literature to focus on the poetry of Li Yu and Feng Yen-ssu. It contains nearly one hundred translations of Chinese poems written during the brief and turb ulent Southern T'ang Dynasty (907-960 A.D.). Bryant describes and evaluates the major contribution of Li Yu and Feng Yen-ssu to the evolution of the poetry form known as t'zu - a form which reflects the highly developed cultural milieu of th e p e r i o d...The tz'u and its many and varied origins are considered at length. Bryant discusses the improvisational quality which makes these poems different from the traditional shih style of the time. He also ephasizes the 'aural' quality o f t he p oe ms w hich were originally composed to be sung to music. For this reason he includes a phonetic translation of each poem as it would have been pronounced at the time of its writing." Moments of hilarity interspersed with impatience and frustration are recorded verbatim, along with an underlying sense of urgency about winning a war that hung in t h e b a l a nce for too long. Written to the Dean of Women at Macdonald College in Ste. Anne de Bellevue, Mary Buch's letters lay untouched for over fifty years after her return to Canada from England in 1945. Today they serve as a looking-glas s in to th e Wa r Years that is tinged with the freshness of youthful spontaneity and the promise of a brighter tomorrow. 849 Buchan, William. (John Buchan). JOHN BUCHAN: A MEMOIR.
Griffin House, Toronto, 1982.
272 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 887601081 B&w photographs. "John Buchan was a man of remarkably diverse achievements: writer, lawyer, politician, soldier, scholar and, finally, Governor-General of Canada. He was the friend of Roosevelt and of George V, of Henry James and T.E. Lawrence; indeed, there was scarcely a prominent figure of the twenties and thirties whom he did not know. His contemporaries are among the most successful men of their day; his nov e l s , still widely read, dominated the market between the wars; his histories and biographies are much admired; his achievements in public office demonstrate a gift for government and a visionary wisdom. Yet through all his work there runs a thr ea d sp un of the simple beliefs by which he stood - courage, truth, loyalty, honour, compassion. Such a creed made him kindly, gentle and much loved; his untimely death provoked an enviable outburst of sorrow and sense of loss. To his public, ho wev er , a nd to succeeding generations, he is an enigma, often mistakenly accused of attitudes he never held. This book, by his son, shows John Buchan as he appeared to his family and close friends, an appealing and intimate portrait of a man whos e fa me rest s - perhaps wrongly - on his skill as a novelist. Drawn from the author's own memories, and from privileged and unpublished sources, this is an elegant study of the private face behind the public mask, in the light of an extraordinary care er. McClelland & Stewart, Toronto, 1968, first edition.
302 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w illustrations. "Oxen were still yoked to sledges and the scythe and the ax and the crosscut saw were common everyday tools when Ernest Buckler grew up on a Nova Scotia farm at the edge of the wilderness. (This book) recalls those days. With sudden stabbing immediacy it brings the reader a bird sound, an odor, acrid or delicious, a remembered vagary of wind or sun, the timbre of a voice, or the true look of the men and women who peopled the Nova Scotia of Mr. Buckler's boyhood. It brings back as well the whole texture of a life that now exists only in our memories of the snowbound world of Whittier and the farm life of our grandfathers' times - a life so deeply rooted in t h e e l e m entals of earth and rock, wind and weather, and so closely paced to the rhythm of the seasons, of birth, growth and death, that each change on the face of nature (a blood-red sunset, a frost at dawn, the first pales leaves on a silver b ir ch ) i s re so nant with meaning...." "Dr. Robert Buckman is well known on both sides of the Atlantic as a television presenter of medical topics, a best-selling author, a cancer physician and ( occasionally) an entertainer. In this unusual autobiography, he tells the story of his life so far: as an exceptionally small child, a young physican, a performer (appearing on stage with the Monty Python crew), columnist and author. What mak e s t h is book even more intriguing is that he has also been a patient - suffering a near-fatal auto-immune disease in 1979 and an inflammation of the spinal cord ten years later which has left him partially paralyzed. In these pages, Dr. Buckman d ea l s un flinchingly with medicine, health, theatre, sex, love, television, alcohol, money, telephones, flatulence, filing systems and a few other minor details of modern life. 'Not Dead Yet' is often funny, sometimes hilarious, occasionally ser iou s a nd a lwa ys engaging." Minor wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very minor rubbing. Near Fine/Near Fine

855 Buker, George E. SWAMP SAILORS: RIVERINE WARFARE IN THE EVERGLADES 1835-1842.
University of Florida, Gainesville, 1975.
152 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0813003520 Map endpapers, b&w illustrations. "Until the Second Seminole War the United States Navy had generally employed the Federalist doctrine (cruiser-commerce-raiding), but the un iqueness of this Indian conflict caused the navy to adopt a new offensive strategy. For the first time in history the American Navy was pitted against a nonmaritime foe. There were no single merchantmen to attack; there were no cruisers to e n g a g e in single-ship combat; there were no enemy fleets to be repelled from the nation's harbors. Instead, there were Indians practicing guerilla tactics in a watery environment - the Everglades of Florida. Athough it was not apparent at th e be gi nn in g o f the war, the navy's only hope for victory lay in the development of a strategy for riverine warfare. It was a kind of warfare that demanded specially trained combat groups, organized for sustained land/sea operations. It requir ed jo int ac tio n wi th the army. It called for a naval command familiar with setting up and directing complex operations and diverse forces to achieve an overall objective. In developing a strategy of riverine warfare, United States Navy polic y e volv ed f rom a de fe nsi ve to an offensive position, from a society of highly individualistic and inflexible sea captains into a well-meshed cooperative unit capable of working not only alone but also with the army. Between 1835 and 1842, the nav y cam e of age. Her e i s a dramatic account of that vital time, enhanced by an awesome setting, which will engage and enlighten both the scholar of naval history and the armchair sailor." 860 Bull, Theodore, editor. RHODESIAN PERSPECTIVE.
Michael Joseph, London, 1967, first edition.
184 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Map endpapers, fold-out map showing land apportionment in 1965. "The first and major portion of this book consists of a factual account of some of the more important political, social and economic developments in Britain's colony of Southern Rhodesia from the time of the first European occupation to the present day. It draws on historical records, official reports and government statements to explain what the Land Apportionment Act is, why it was introduced, and what its practical effects are; to examine local government, the educational systems, and economic development in urban and rural areas; to analyse the effect which some of the past and present legislation has on the living and working conditions of black and white Rhodesians; and, in the process, to illustrate the political attitudes of Europeans and Africans, and the separate development of the racial communities. (It) collates much of the kind of factual material which used to appear regularly in the Salisbury journal, the 'Central African Examiner', before it ceased publication. UDI and the censorship imposed under the Emergency regulations in November, 1965, resulted in the 'Examiner's' December issue being heavily cut - about half the material submitted for censorship was banned. The journal's publishing company launched a court case to challenge the legality of censorship and so, by implication, of the Rhodesian regime, but this was unsuccessful and the December 1965 issue was therefore (its) last. The factual material in this book was prepared by former contributors to the 'Examiner' and edited by Theodore Bull, the sponsor and former editor of the journal. His own personal assessment of British policy on Rhodesia, before and since UDI, and the likely outcome of the present deadlock, forms the second part of the book. His conclusions are controversial, and readers of widely differing political views could be equally shocked by them, but they may stimulate a healthy reassessment of attitude towards the whole unhappy Rhodesian situation." McGill-Queen's University Press, Kingston, (1994), Ist printing.
309 pp, 8vo, HC in dust jacket. "...offers a new perspective on industrial capitalism and class formation in Canada. Using Brantford, Ontario, as a case study, he provides a cultural analysis of the business community during the mid-nineteenth cen tury and shows that, because self-employment was so pervasive, the impact of industrializatin was particularly striking. Self-employed businessmen were forced to try to locate themselves in an emerging class system that often contradicted t r a d i t i o n al Victorian social ideals of independence and manliness. Burley's exploration of the tensions behind the conflicting values - tension both between myth and reality and within the bourgois world view of itself - is an important a d di ti on t o th e li te rature on business behaviour and Victorian cultural history." "Carrying the Royal Family by air is a unique job and to do it, there is a unique flying unit. Now fifty years old, The Queen' s Flight of the Royal Air Force operates to probably the highest standards of any organisation in the world of aviation. Their bright red helicopters, Andovers and now BAe 146s are a familiar sight on Royal occasions, their punctuality and rel i a b i l ity taken for granted. The effort which goes into maintaining those standards, and into assuring the Royal Family's safety and comfort in the air, is the fascinating subject of this fully authorised book. Behind the aircrew is the back-u p te am i n Operations, the engineers, the administrative staff, the ground support for the helicopters, the stewards and the security staff - they all play their part, and they all find a place in this book. The history of the Flight (and indeed of Ro yal fl yi ng, which goes back to July 1917) is also recounted both in narrative form and in cameo reminiscences from ex-members of the Flight; these include Brian Trubshaw, later Concorde's test pilot. With 150 photographs to illustrate the te xt, the resu lt is a rare glimpse behind the royal scene, which will intrigue anyone with an interest in aviation." Coteau, (Regina, SK, 1993).
103 pp, 8vo, soft cover. LARGE INSCRIPTION BY AUTHOR ON FREE FRONT ENDPAPER. "Hitler and Stalin stalk these poems. Mick Burrs examines the Fuehrer's love of King Kong. He probes Stalin's relationship with his washerwoman mother, who knew him as her little 'ZoZo'. He confronts the kind of mind that can reduce individuals to political symbols or mere numbers. But tyrants are not only found in political office. He sees a direct connection between the rise of the modern dictator and the phe onomenon of the multiple murderer. 'Every multiple murderer is a miniature tyrant,' Burrs writes; 'he only lacks an enormous arsenal, a loyal following, and a sacred cause'." Interior - clean and tight. Faber and Faber, London, 1993, first edition.
240 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 057114389X "When the British were in India they developed a curious cuisine all of their own. As they made their mark on their host culture, the formidable memsahib - or English housew ife - made sure that much traditional cuisine was rejected in favour of an impossible combination of European customs, and the results were frequenlty chaotic. Anglo-Indian cooking was at its best when it achieved a kind of cultural balance; mu l l i g atawny, kedgeree and Worcestershire sauce are all products of the Raj. Drawing on first-hand accounts, David Burton includes over sixty authentic recipes, adapts the best of them for the modern cook, and builds up a fascianting, often hilar io us p ic ture of the British - at best, endearingly naive, at worst, ignorant and xenophobic - seen through the kitchen door." Stepping through the door, Jack stumbles into a world unlike an y he's ever known. He finds himself in a bright, cheerful, colorful place called Christmas Town. 886 Buruma, Ian. Signed. MURDER IN AMSTERDAM. THE DEATH OF THEO VAN GOGH AND THE LIMITS OF TOLERANCE.
Penguin, New York, 2006, first edition (remainder mark).
278 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. SIGNED BY AUTHOR ON HALF TITLE PAGE. ISBN 1594201080 "It was the emblematic crime of our moment: On a cold November day in Amsterdam, an angry young Muslim man, Mohammed Bouyeri, the son of Moroccan immigrants, shot and killed the celebrated and controversial Dutch filmmaker Theo van Gogh, great-grandnephew of Vincent and iconic European provocateur, for making a movie with the Dutch politician Ayaan Hirsi Ali that 'insulted the prophet Mohammed'. After Bouyeri shot Van Gogh, he calmly stood over the body and cut his throat with a curved machete, as if performing a ritual sacrifice, which in a very real sense he was. The murder horrified quiet, complacent, prosperous Holland, a country that prides itself on being a bastion of tolerance, and sent shock waves across Europe and around the world. Shortly thereafter, Ian Buruma returned to the country of his childhood to investigate the event and its larger meaning. The result is his masterpiece: a book with the intimacy and narrative brilliance for which Buruma is renowned. (His) entire life's work has led him to this story - the tale of what happens when political Islam collides with the secular West, and tolerance finds its limits." Futura, London, 1974.
186 pp, mass market paperback. ISBN 0860071308 B&w maps/battle plans. "On Christmas Day, 1943, blinded by the fury of an Arctic blizzard, encircled by enemy destroyers, the German battleship Scharnhorst fought for her life. The luck of the Schar nhorst had become a legend. In 1942 she had slipped unscathed through the Channel under the very bows of the British fleet to harry the Arctic convoy routes. The British convoy which sailed for Murmansk on Christmas Eve, 1943, seemed a perfect t a r get for another lightning raid. In fact it was a trap to lure the battleship into the open and then destroy her. This is the story of Scharnhorst's dramatic sortie from her Norwegian lair. The story of a battle fought with outstanding cour a ge a ga inst impossible odds until the most feared of all Hitler's battleships sank at last off North Cape." Dover, New York, 1962.
216 pp + publisher's catalog, 8vo (8 7/16" H), soft cover. Profusely illustrated with Busch's b&w cartoons. Bilingual text (English/German). "Wilhelm Busch (1832-1908), endowed with an equipotent facility with sketch-pad and rhyming dictionary, c reated during his career some of the most arresting sketches and drollest verses the world has ever seen. Few men since his time have shown the same ability to match simple yet penetrating pictures with rollicking, quotable verse. In his nat i v e G e rmany he is still by all odds the best-loved creator of illustrated light verse....(Many of his pithy aphorisms have long since become folk sayings among the Germans.) The variety of tone and subject matter is wide: Busch is in turn male vo le nt , j ov ial, sardonic, diabolical and even bloodthirsty as he castigates hypocrisy, stodginess, stupidity, egotism, drunkenness, and other human foibles....The English translations are both ingenious and faithful; in most cases they are the fi rst En gl ish tr anslations ever made. Those who do not read German may be certain that the original has been translated into English with its spiciness and sense intact. Both the German and the English appear side by side, so that readers o f Ge rman may sa vor Busc h's own delightful rhymes, while those who are learning German will find it an enjoyable way to gain familiarity with the langauge...." 891 Bush, Karen and Irving, Ross. SUCCESSFUL JUMPING: TRAINING YOUR HORSE WITH GRIDWORK.
Crowood, Marlborough, 1997, reprint.
157 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1852237635 "All horses and ponies have some aptitude for jumping, but it is up to the rider to develop the natural talent that a horse may possess in order for it to realize its full po tential. One of the most effective ways of doing this is through using gridwork, a logical system of training that increases the horse's confidence, encourages the development of good musculature, and improves the horse's accuracy, agility an d t e c h nique. It can be adapted to suit the individual needs of any horse and can be introduced at any stage of its jumping career. The benefits of gridwork are beyond dispute, but too often it is the subject of misunderstanding and, consequen tl y , ab us e, which can lead to the onset of problems rather than to the resolution of them. In (this book), gridwork is demystified and explained in a way that will enable anyone to develop a safe and effective training programme. There is pra cti ca l ins tru cti on and advice on prepatory work, choosing equipment, building fences, calculating distances, and developing gridwork exercises; there is also an invaluable trouble-shooting chapter, which aims to identify the causes of any probl ems and s ugge st r emed ies. At every stage, from the basics to the more advanced, the reader is encouraged to consolidate progress and move forward in a step-by-step, logical fashion towards improved performance and, ultimately, greater success. Cl earl y w ritte n and prof usely illustrated with photographs and explanatory line-drawings, this book is the most up-to-date and comprehensive work on the subject of gridwork yet published." 894 Butler, Alan and Dafoe, Stephen. A SECRET HISTORY OF THE KNIGHTS TEMPLAR.
Magpie, London, 2009.
233 pp, 7 3/4" H, soft cover. ISBN 9781849010368 "The true genesis of the Knights Templar belongs far back in time, long before Christianity even developed. The Templars were an offshoot of a little understood monastic brotherhood, the Cistercian s, who themselves danced to the tune of an extremely powerful group of individuals inhabiting Burgundy and Flanders from the time of the Romans onwards. Butler and Defoe offer a detailed account of the rise of a specific group identified as 'th e T r oyes Fraternity' which did not simply respond to the caprices of history, but made it. Behind the Knights Templar lay a belief pattern almost as old as humanity and a heritage that was already ancient before recorded history began. The stor y i s bo th fascinating and compulsive. It will leave the reader in no doubt as to the true intentions of the Knights Templar, or of the shadowy but immensely influential organization that brought them into being. This story is both surprising and sh oc ki ng, and its implications for our orthodox view of history are staggering." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks.
