Naval Institute Press, Annapolis, Maryland, 2004.
338 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1591142482 B&w photographs, maps. "....offers a memorable account of how Thach devised the plan to give his squadron of F4F Wildcats a fighting chance against Japan's formidable Zeros. Using matchsticks on his kitchen table, he determined that the Wildcats, working in pairs, should weave back and forth as they encountered a Zero, giving the wingman an opportunity to shoot at the enemy on his partner's tail. The use of the w e a v e against the Zero at Midway cemented its practical application. But, as this colorful portrait of the famous pilot clearly shows, Thach's innovative tactic was far from his sole contribution to the Navy. Throughout a forty-year career, T ha ch p ro vi ded answers to multiple challenges facing the Navy, and his ideas were implemented servicewide. A native of Arkansas and 1927 graduate of the Naval Academy, Thach earned his wings at Pensacola in 1930 and became a highly decorated ac e. He wa s a n e arly test pilot, a creative task force operations officer in the last year of Wordl War II, and an outstanding carrier commander in the Korean War. During the cold war, he helped advance antisubmarine warfare. Contributing to hi s s ucce ss w as t he f act that Thach was a charismatic leader, interested in everyone around him regardless of rank or status. His dry sense of humor and constant smile attracted people from all walks of life, and he was a popular figure in H olly wood . To day, Thach rema ins a hero among naval aviators, his most famous combat tactic still in use by modern jets." Small bump to top corner of rear board, light wrinkling at top of spine. "(This is) a survey of the uniforms worn by officers and men in the three combatant navies - Britain, France and S pain. John Fabb and Jack Cassin-Scott first set the uniforms in the context of life aboard a fighting ship during the Napoleonic wars - a severely disciplined, often brutal existence punctuated by battles, like Trafalgar, of terrifying bloodine s s . They go on to describe the uniforms, rank by rank and nation by nation, from the splendour of the admiral in full dress, through each rank in full dress and undress versions until, at the bottom of the scale we find the starkly functional cl ot hi ng of the ordinary seaman. Particular care has been taken to present uniforms from original sources and Dress Regulations and, where appropriate, to show back views - so often neglected yet of much interest to, for example, modellers. In ad dit ion th e re is information on swords and decorations. In all cases the illustrations have been taken from contemporary sources." Ian Allan, Shepperton, 1991, first edition.
128 pp, 4to (11 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0711020221 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, drawings. "Weaving his narrative around the detailed eyewitness accounts of aircrews, groundcrews and those who built the Stirling, (t he author) reveals the troubled life story of the Shorts' big bomber. Through the eyes of a factory worker at Queen's Island, Belfast, we witness the birth of one of the RAF's first four-engined 'heavies'. We climb the crew ladder, follow the s k i p per up the long dark fuselage to the cockpit and fly with him and his crew on one of the first Stirling raids over Germany. Lie on your belly in the bomb aimer's position as the skipper dodges flak and fighters at low level: 'We crossed the e ne my c oast at Wilhelmshaven and were soon flying at low level between two of the Friesian Islands - the guns on each island appeared to be firing horizontally or down at us.' Sit in on a top secret briefing for an SD Stirling crew at Tempsford, and fl y w ith them to a DZ 'somewhere in Occupied Europe' to deliver their 'Joe'. Freeze in the biting East Anglian wind with the groundcrews on dispersals as they try to change an exhaust manifold: 'The Bristol Hercules engines were superb - the re w as v irtu ally nothing to leak from them. But it was a long way down to the ground if you slipped on the wings.' Fly in the greatest aerial armadas ever seen as you carry crack paratroops to Normandy on the eve of D-Day, or tow a lumbering Ho rsa g lider thro ugh flak-peppered skies to Arnhem." Very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, tiny dint on bottom edge of rear board. Dust jacket has bee price-clipped, has very light wrinkling and minor wear at top/bottom of spine and flap-f olds. Four Square / New English Library, London, 1967.

This remark by a beautiful and very successful young Italian so troubled Oriana Fallaci that s he set out on a journey around the world, to meet and talk with women and to learn the truth. She spoke with women in purdah. With the matriarchs of Kuala Lumpur. With Hong Kong taxi-girls. With the emancipated American, twice-divorced and d e s p e rate. Her report is a fascinating record of modern woman's thoughts and feelings. An honest and provocative view of the 'useless sex'." 447 pp, 8vo (8 9/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "(D)iscusses the military side of World War I in the light of its battles, tactics and weapons; its problems with supply and transport; its armies and their co mmanders. The engagements in the many theaters of war in Europe, Asia and Africa are described in vivid detail, but particular attention is focused on the Western Front, where the principal and decisive battles were fought and, as it happened, whe r e the English-speaking peoples played a major role --- the place of seapower and of the new type of warfare waged in the air is not ignored. The role played by civilian politics is covered as well, particularly in situations where it had direct b ea ring on the fighting - such as in Sarajevo in 1914 where a spark touched off the Central European powder keg and signalled the beginning of the war; the political considerations which caused the United States as well as Rumania, Bulgaria, and Ita ly to enter the war late; and the revolution which caused Russia to leave it early." 145 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0889543062 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, maps, diagrams. SIGNED BY AUTHOR ON TITLE PAGE. "Silver Centre was one of Canada's celebrated mining camps. It discovered millions of dollars in silver ore (when silver's price averaged 50 cents an ounce) and probably has as much mineral wealth today in its unexamined Keewatin ground for some future economic development. But most importantly, in terms of Ontario's social hi s t o r y , this Silver Centre story represents the way of life for many of the people living in northern Ontario during the early years of (the twenieth) century. The story follows in detail the mining prospectors of 1907 - their silver discoverie s; t he e ar ly mines - their success and failures; the depressing World War I years; then rebirth with the mother lode discovery in 1920 and its climactic decade of phenomenal silver treasure; finally, the inevitable exhaustion of known deposits. F all ing me tal prices discourage continued searches. Mines close - sudden abandonment. This particular drama of prospectors and developers struggling with the Precambrian rocks is a constant, unifying theme. (This) is the story of a mining comm unit y an d it s pe ople, of fellowship and stubborn pleasure." Very light edge wear, previous owner's name/date in ink on free front endpaper. 253 pp, 8vo (9" H), soft cover. ISBN 9781550027846 B&w illustrations. 'The secrets of Voodoo, Santeria, and Obeah are among the oldest enigmas in the world. Their roots go back to prehistoric Africa - perhaps even beyond that. From the sixteent h century onwards, the slave trade brough these ancient mysteries to the West, where they blended strangely with traditional Christianity: the ancient African gods became identified with legendary saints. This integration of the two faiths slowly e volved to form the many varieties of Voodoo, Santeria, and Obeah that are widely practised throughout the world today. Contemporary Voodoo priests, priestesses, magicians, and enchanters use rare herbs and spices as well as charms, dolls, and tal is mans to control the natural world in many ways science cannot always explain. Accounts of their inexplicable successes are examined in depth. Sinister accounts of zombiism - reports of the living dead - are also inseparably interwoven throughou t V oodoo history. What powers do these old religions still possess?" Inside - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - clean and bright. Fine

454 pp, large 8vo (9 3/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0713993022 "As one of three sisters herself, Penelope Farmer sets her exploration of sisterhood in an autobiographical framework, describing loving and not so loving sisters in the past and present generations on all sides of her family. With the help of writers in many fields and over many centuries, she guides us through the peaks and troughs of sistery love, both between sisters and between sisters and brothers - from c h i l d h o o d, separation, love, marriage and parenthood, to old age and death itself. Famous literary sisters appear: the Brontes; Virginia Woolf and Vanessa Bell; the Mitfords; Mary Lamb and brother Charles; Vera Brittain. Alongside them the t he at ri ca l an d musical ones: Joan Fontaine and Olivia de Havilland; Maria Callas and her sister; Jacqueline du Pre and hers; Mozart and his sister. Then there are the well-known fictional sisters: the March sisters; Dorothea and Celia Brooke; t he Sch leg el si ste rs ; Ursula and Gudrun from 'Women in Love'. And many not so well-known sisters, both fictional and non-fictional besides. We observe the sisterly bonds of bees, lions, elephants, gorillas and chimpanzees. We are guided by Ri cha rd D awki ns thr ough th e genetics of ant colonies. And, throughout, we are asked to reflect on the nature of sisterhood itself. Is a sister born not made? What is the essence of the sisterly bond? What relationship does that bond have to the myth of si ste rhoo d con stru cted around it? - a myth leading to all those symbolic sisterhoods, of nurses, nuns, feminists and so forth, a section on whom concludes the book....Through poetry, prose, autobiography, memoir, science and anthrop logy , Pen elope Farm er pi eces t ogeth er the world of sisters and sisterhood, creating a rich tapestry of evocative and often moving writing that will find echoes in the experience of all who have or are sisters, or even just those who would like to h ave ha d them ." Hamish Hamilton, London, 1971, new edition. (First published 1858)
288 pp, 8vo (8 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. A story of school life in Victorian England, in which the hero, who starts out well, is drawn into a life of cheating, bullying, swearing, smoking, and drinking to the dismay of his friends. "Des pite - or perhaps even because of? - its high moral fervour, the book remains surprisingly readable, and in his Introduction to the present edition John Rowe Townsend argues most pesuasively that it still has much to offer present-day readers. I t i s, he says, 'a moral cliff hanger in which the hero slips perilously from ledge to ledge, in ever greater danger of being dashed to eternal ruin on the rocks below'. It is also a book of enormous vitality, undeniably preposterous, but never du ll ; a period piece which can be laughed at for its excesses but nonetheless deserves its place as a significant milestone of children's literature." Sutton, (Stroud, 1999).
238 pp, large 8vo (9 9/16" H), soft cover. ISBN 0750923261 B&w photos. "The reality of what actually happened on the First World War killing fields at Ypres, the Somme and Passchendaele was not widely known in Britain until long after the war had ended. But when at last the public learned the full story of how, over four bloody years, swathes of British soldiers had been mown down and blasted to oblivion to gain just a few yards of ground on the Western Front, there was a popular outcr y . . . The sanitized image of war soon turned from one of noble sacrifice to a vision of mindless slaughter as the British public reacted to the lies created by the wartime propaganda process...At first branded as outlaws by Lord Kitchener and liab le f or a rrest if found anywhere near the frontline, by 1918 the war correspondents had become fully integrated into the military system as mouthpieces for the 'official' version of events. Using a wide range of contemporary newspaper extracts t o c omp lem ent his narrative , Martin Farrar relates their troubled story and focuses in particular on the work of five men who became accredited to the British General Headquarters...Their actions not only affected the mass media's credibility at the tim e, b ut a lso raised the possibility that, had the truth been told in the first place, the war could have been over long before 1918." "From military ballooning in the Sudan in the nineteenth century to helicopter assignments in the Gulf in the late twentieth, Arm y aviation has been at the forefront of Britain's military operations. Here, for the first time, the remarkable story of the Army Air Corps is compellingly told....The British Army was first involved in airborne operations as early as the 18 8 0 s , w h en it established a Balloon Section in the Corps of Royal Engineers. Subsequently, it was among the first armies in the world to recognize the military implications of the invention of the aeroplane and, following the success of the Ai r Ba tt al i on , which replaced the Balloon Section in 1911, a handful of enthusiasts emerged to form the Royal Flying Corps. The Army returned to the air once more with the outbreak of the Second World War, making a unique contribution to ground op era tio ns th rou gh aerial observation for artillery and by providing glider pilots for British airborne forces. Soldier pilots were retained after the war for target spotting and liaison work, and when helicopters arrived, the Army insisted o n o pera ting th ose eng age d in the warp and weft of land battle, reviving its own Army Air Corps to this end. 'The Army in the Air' tells the fascinating story of those spirited and skilled individuals who lie behind the distinguished history of t he Ar my Ai r Co rps, from the early military balloonists of the Victorian age to the efficient fighting force of today - and tomorrow." W.W. Norton, New York, 1981, book club edition.
256 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w illustrations. "This is an upstairs-downstairs view of the Victorian-Edwardian army, one of the world's most peculiar fighting forces. The battles it fought are household words, but the idios yncracies and eccentricities of its soldiers and the often appalling conditions under which they lived have gone largely unrecorded. This book explores the lives of officers and men, their foibles, follies, and gallantry, their diversions, food a n d drink, and women, their discipline and their rewards. Brave, glorious, and outrageous, they took their fun where they found it. Full of 'beef, beer, and lust', the common soldier inhabitated a separate world from his upper-class officers. Ba rr ac ks and officers' mess were united only by their common loyalty to their regiments, and their regiments were as quirky as their men. Each regiment prided itself on its uniqueness; each was different in character and uniform from any other. So me eve n had their own marching pace. The author....spent fifteen years gathering material for this work, and he writes with appreciation and affection for this peculiar army and its soldiers." Recruited in the kingdom of Nepal since the early ninetee nth century, these short, wiry hillmen have served the kings and queens of Britain with such loyalty, tenacity, and incredible bravery that often the sound of their battle cry 'Ayo Gurkhali!' (roughly translated as 'Here come the Gurkhas!') has c a u s ed enemy soldiers to flee. The Gurkhas fought beside the British in the Indian Mutiny, in France and Mesopotamia during World War I, and in every theater during World War II. They have fought as well in countless small wars - 'the savage w ar s of p eace' - including the Northwestern Frontier of India, Malaya, Borneo, and most recently the Falkland Islands. Their courage is legendary. Since 1911, when they first became eligible, thirteen Gurkhas have been awarded the Victoria Cross , a n unm atc hed record. The story begins with the British Indian Army fighting a heroic rearguard action against the invading Japanese down the Malaysian peninsula and ends with many of these same soldiers defeated in their effort to invade India as al li es o f Japan. (The author) intertwines powerful descriptions of military action with a unique knowledge of how the INA was formed and its role in the broader struggel for Indian independence. Fay incorporates the personal reminiscences of Prem Sa gha l, a senior officer in the INA, and Lakshmi Swaminadhan, leader of its women's sections, to help the reader understand the motivations of those who took part. Their experiences offer an engaging personal counterpoint to the political milita ry h isto ry. " Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. (Osprey, London, 1996), reprint.
96 pp, large 8vo (9 3/4" H), soft cover. Profusely illustrated in color and b&w with photos, maps, battle plans, reproductions, uniform studies. "The fall of Khartoum and the death of General Gordon at the hand of the Mahdi's army constituted one of the most colourful and controversial episodes of Britain's military history - a seemingly unfeeling Imperial government had 'let down' one of the nation's heroes. Here, Donald Featherstone, well known for his many books on military subjects and wargaming in particular, focuses especially on the battles fought by the relief columns." "The Osprey Campaign Series presents concise, authoritative accounts of the great conflicts of history. Each volume begins with an assessment of each command er's campaign stragegy, then recounts the progress of the fighting, blow-by-blow. More than 90 illustrations, including maps, charts and colour plates accompany the text, and a series of three-dimensional battle maps mark the critical stages o f t h e campaign. Each volume concludes with a brief guide to the battlefield today, and detailed notes for wargamers." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. 1950 Featherstone, Donald. SOLO-WARGAMING.
Frederick Warne, New York, 1973, first U.S. edition.
192 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. 60 b&w illustrations. "Many wargamers, particularly during the early stages of their interest in the hobby, are unable to find live opponents to fight on their table-top battlefields. Their effor ts at wearing two different hats, as they manipulate both armies, and with the full knowledge of what each intends to do, soon palls. Their interest in wargaming retreats. Then there are those wargamers whose enthusiasm is so great that figh t i n g o ne, or even two, battles a week is not sufficient, and who are led to seek a means of carrying on their table-top battles when a live opponent is not available. (This book) caters to both, describing innumerable methods of manoeuvring tw o wa rg am e s armies, under such conditions of secrecy and surprise that the result of the battle is in the balance until the last cannon is fired. It opens many doors to ingenious and practical methods of doing battle with model soldiers, raising t he pas tim e in some sense almost to the level of chess. It enables the 'lonely wargamer' to find pleasure rather than boredom in his solitary state." 1955 Featherstone, Donald. BRIDGES OF BATTLE: FAMOUS BATTLEFIELD ACTIONS AT BRIDGES AND RIVER CROSSINGS.
Arms and Armour, London, 1998, first edition.
256 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1854094491 B&w plates. "From more than 2,000 years of military history, (the author) has selected some one hundred examples of battles centred on river crossings. They range in size f rom small-scale actions such as the battle for Powick Bridge in the early months of the English Civil War to massive, army-scale operations including the final crossing of the Rhine at Remagen during the Second World War. One of the biggest bat t l e s during the Napoleonic Wars - indeed, the biggest battle to that date with more than 300,000 men in combat - was fought across the Danube in 1809, culminating in the battle of Wagram. Later, as Napoleon's fortunes began to ebb, there took p la ce t he desperate and tragic crossing of the Berezina in 1812 when Napoleon's depleted army, retreating from Moscow, fought to cross the freezing river to escape the pursuing and encirling Russians and the hell of a Russian winter. The America n C ivi l W ar also provides many examples of battles for river crossings, such as First Bull Run, the opening engagement of the war, the fight for Burnside's Bridge at Antietam and the Battle of the Big Black River during the riverine campaign for Vick sbur g. Oth er, often lesser-known, actions are also to be found in this book, including tales of desperate courage from the Indian Mutiny and other British colonial wars. The range of contributions, including expert anayses and eyewitness acc ounts ofte n e nabl es the reader to see both sides of the story - those of the defender and the attacker - and to compare battles fought in similar circumstances, but with very different weapons, across the centuries." 1956 Featherstone, Donald. Line illustrations by W.R.F. Jenkinson. BATTLES WITH MODEL SOLDIERS.
David & Charles, Newton Abbot, 1972, second impression.
215 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0715349252 B&w illustrations. "Once aptly described as 'chess with a thousand pieces', wargaming can be made as complicated and elaborate as desired, or so simple that even young children can take part. This book - the ideal introduction to the hobby - explains what wargaming is all about, how armies can be assembled and how, on any reasonably-sized table, realistic engagements can be fought by tactical manoeuvring. The basic rules by which forces are moved and casualties assessed are explained, there is practical advice on making one's own soldiers and on conversions, and guidance on how to prepare and lay out realistic battlefield scenes. Another great attraction of th e w a rgaming hobby is the research it invites into famous campaigns of the past, and not the least valuable part of this book is its brief survey of warfare from earliest times to the present day. Here the military tactics of each period are cons id e re d, together with the role of the different types of soldiers and their weapons, and there is an extensive bibliography to facilitate research into specific periods of military history." "If no single work could explore every aspect of man's mystical experience, this Encyclopedia can clain to be unprecedented in its fullness of co verage. It will serve as a comprehensive work of reference for many years to come. Disillusionment with institutionalized Christianity and the consequent decline in churchgoing in recent years have been manifested in an increased interest in E a s t e rn thinking, meditation, the occult and extrasensory perception. Ranging from Christian mystical theology to Sufism; from the ancient philosophers to the Cambridge Platonists; from visionaries such as William Blake and classics such as ' T he C lo ud o f Unknowing' to the role played by drugs, yoga, music and dance, this Encyclopedia provides essential information on the manifold aspects of mysticism. Wherever possible, Professor Ferguson allows the mystics to speak for themselve s and , i n a ddi tio n, he frequently draws on the work of their interpreters. 1969 Ferguson, Niall. THE PITY OF WAR. EXPLAINING WORLD WAR I.
Basic Books, New York, 1999, book club edition.
563 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs, tables, graphs. "More than four million Americans were mobilized in 1917-18, of whom more than 100,000 were killed - double the number who died in Vietnam. This was the fir st, bloody step on the road to globalism which would characterize our foreign policy for the rest of the twentieth century. Even American literature was transformed by the impact of the war on writers like Hemingway and Fitzgerald. Internation a l l y , more than any other event, the First World War made the twentieth century what it was: It toppled the four great empires of the Old World and left a fifth - the British - mortgaged to the hilt. More than nine million men lost their lives, y et n on e of its stated objectives were met. Rather, it spawned seven decades of Communist rule in Russia, the rise of Adolf Hitler's Third Reich, and the horror of the Holocaust. Now, as the century draws to a close, the time is right for a r adi cal re ass essment of the 'Great War'. In (this book, the author) explodes the myths of 1914-18. He argues that the fatal conflict between Britain and Germany was far from inevitable. It was Britain's declaration of war that needlessly turne d a cont inen tal conflict into a world war, and it was Britain's economic mismanagement and military inferiority that necessitated American involvement, forever altering the global balance of power. Ferguson vividly brings back to life one of the semi nal c atast roph es of the century, not through a dry citation of chronological chapter and verse, but through a series of brilliant chapters that answer the key questions: Why did the war start? Why did it continue? And why did it stop? How d id th e Germ ans ma nage to kill more soldiers than they lost but still end up defeated in November 1918? Above all, why did men fight?" There never was a time, before or since, when so many Americans danc ed. They were times when, no matter where you lived, there was a vast, cavernous ballroom nearby, its ubiquitous ceiling fixture a gigantic rotating sphere whose fragments of mirror splashed the ballroom with shifting, moving splinters of so f t l y - c o lored lights. And those great bands! Who can forget them? Glenn Miller...Tommy Dorsey...Benny Goodman...Chick Webb...Jimmy Lunceford...Jan Savitt...Artie Shaw...and all the others! It's all here, inside these covers: The true stori es o f th os e gr eat bands, with real photos of the men who shaped the sounds, who blazed the trails for all the big bands of today...assembled and recorded so they may not be lost to posterity. Nowhere, up until now, could the American reader fi nd, in o ne vol um e, the warm, wonderful, exciting stories of the big dance bands...told by a musician-scholar. Dundurn, Toronto, 2009, first edition.
236 pp, 8 1/2" H, soft cover. ISBN 9781550028539 "At a turning point in his life, George Fetherling embarked on an adventure to sail round the wrold on one of the last of the tramp freighters. The four-month voyage carried him 30,000 nautical mil es from Europe via the Panama Canal to the South Pacific and back by way of Singapore, Indonesia, the Indian Ocean, and Suez. Written with dash, colour, and droll humour, (his) narrative is peopled by a rich cast of characters, from the Foreign L e g ionnaires of French Polnesia to the 'raskol' gangs of Papua New Guinea. The author captures the reality of life aboard a working cargo ship - the boredom, the seclusion, the differences of nationality and culture that isolation and cramped qu ar te rs seem to exaggerate. But the routine of loneliness or tranquility is punctuated by moments of near-panic - shipboard fires, furniture-smashing storms, even a brush with pirates in the Straits of Malacca." 1993 Fido, Martin. BODYSNATCHERS: A HISTORY OF THE RESURRECTIONISTS 1742-1832.
Weidenfeld and Nicolson, London, 1988.
184 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0297793934 B&w illustrations. "From 1740 to 1832, freshly buried corpses were dug up and surreptitiously hawked to surgeons and anatomists in London and Edinburgh to dissect for research and teaching purposes. The resurrection trade brought together Fellows of the Royal Society and slum-dwelling criminals in an unholy alliance. By the beginning of the nineteenth century, the illicit trade had become one of London's most efficien t l y o rganized departments of crime, with gang-leader Ben Crouch securing a virtual monopoly of delivery to half the teaching hospitals. In Scotland, several surgeons of great eminence loved the adventure of association with desperadoes and willi ng ly a c co mpanied them on their nocturnal excavations. Not surprisingly, there was great public consternation about the activities of the bodysnatchers, but it was only when Burke and Hare introduced murder as a means of acquiring 'subjects' th at the au th ori ties acted to eradicate the ghoulish practice. Martin Fido's book is an enthralling study of a strange byway of criminal low life. It provides the first full and accurate accounts of murderers Helen Torrence and Jean Waldie, Bish op and Head an d El iza Ross. 1995 Field, Stephen, translator. Calligraphy by T.C. Ma. TIAN WEN: A CHINESE BOOK OF ORIGINS.
New Directions, New York, 1986, first edition.
123 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0811210103 "Relatively unknown in the West, (this book) is a fascinating, though often baffling, archaic collection of 186 'questions' about the origins of life and the meaning of a wide vari ety of happenings startling and mundane, earthly and celestial. Because the poem has no single narrative thread, the most informed speculation posits group authorship by a number of roving Taoist scholars, each contributing riddles about the h i s t o r y and legends of his own province as well as ironically posed inquiries into the nature of the universe. The enigmatic and sometimes Sphinxlike conundrums may have been originally intended for debate - to give the popular and prominent di al ec ti ci an s of over 2,300 years ago a tool for honing their convoluted responses. But however the poem took on its present shape and content, it remains the single most comprehensive catalogue of ancient Chinese mythology and pre-Imperial l ege nd in exi ste nce . This translation....combines sound scholarship with an artful grace to produce the 186 questions in couplets that both tease and enchant. In addition to a historical introduction that clearly explains what is known and not know n a bou t th e po em, Field provides extensive notes to help the English-speaking reader understand the basic Chinese myths alluded to in the questions." The poem is presented in Chinese 'li-shi' script opposite the English text. Previous own er's chop (st amp p n hal f-ti tle page, tiny bump to top edge of both boards. Dust jacket is price clipped, minor rubbing. Very Good/Very Good

1997 Filey, Mike and Russell, Victor. FROM HORSE POWER TO HORSEPOWER. TORONTO: 1890-1930.
Dundurn, Toronto, 1993.
112 pp, oblong (8 1/2" H x 11" D) soft cover. ISBN 1550022008 B&w photographs, reproductions. "From the early 1890s through the 1920s, Toronto was caught up in a dizzying transportation revolution. As horse gave way to machine, the look of Toron to and the lifestyles of its inhabitants were altered irrevocably. First there was the electric streetcar, then the automobile, and soon all manner of 'working' vehicles. Street railway tracks were laid, service outlets and dealerships sprang up a cross the city, and the 'auto show' was born, an exciting new feature at the Canadian National Exhibition. (This) is a largely pictorial history of the city as it geared up for the 20th century, featuring vivid photos from the City of Toronto Arc hi ves, many previously unpublished, as well as newspaper ads from the era. Images of fire engines, garbage trucks, automobiles, early aircraft, harbour tugs, and streetcars bring the reader back to a time when all this meant extraordinary change. Th e century was on the move and Toronto was moving with it. The photographers showcased in the book (William James, John H. Boyd, Arthur S. Goss, and Frank W. Micklethwaite) were also breaking new ground, turning away from the formality of the st udio to capture the city in transition, thereby establishing a permanent record - one that we can enjoy today." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - minor corner wear, two small soft corner creases. Very Good+
