202 pp, 8vo (8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0571131115 "This is the fourth in Lawrence Durrell's current sequence of novels, following 'Contance', which was short-listed for the Booker Prize. What Mr Durrell calls his 'quincunx' can now b e seen emerging as an Avignon quintet, more and more recognizably linked with the themes and characters of 'The Alexandria Quartet'. In 'Sebastian' the locale is principally Geneva, picking up from the close of 'Constance', and as the story unfol d s what were enigmas become revelations, and what seemed brilliant patchwork becomes a cunning woven tapestry. The relationship of Constance and Affad is under threat, and they realize they are heading for a fearful crisis; while her professional p ra ctice as a clinical psychiatrist involves her in the patient healing of an autistic child = her lover's son - and the handling of a dangerous criminal psychopath. These intertwined episodes are as full of tender insight nd electrifying melodr ama as anything Mr Durrell has ever written." Two small faint soiling marks on top of textblock. ISBN 0002556979 "Many people's introduction to Gerald Durr ell was 'My Family and Other Animals', the glorious description of his childhood in Corfu, full of sunshine, humour and sheer delight in discovering the natural world and the animals inhabiting it. Durrell saw, earlier than most, the threats to th e animal kingdom of human ignorance and greed, and spent the rest of his life contributing in every way he could to the conservation struggle. By the time he died in 1995 he had written nearly forty books, amusing countless readers and inspiring t he m to join the fight to prevent the despoiling of the natural environment and its creatures. Lee Durrell, his wife, became as engrossed as he in the preservation of wildlife, and for 'The Best of Gerald Durrell' she has chosen the most evocative, qu irky, engaging and humorous of his writings to give a wonderful picture of how his extraordinary life unfolded. Starting with his early naturalist days and the rapid development of his passion for animals, this irresistible anthology guides us thro ugh his collecting trips to such places as Cameroon, Argentina and Madagascar, his growing concern about the nature of zoos, the emergence of his conservation plans, and the realization of his lifelong dream - a zoo of his own - and how it beca me a model for the future. Durrell's enviable ability ot tell a good story and his unrivalled, acutely perceptive and utterly delightful observations of both animals and the human species made him one of our most consistently popular and entertaini ng au thors. This lavishly illustrated collection brings together the best of his writings, and serves as a glowing testimony to one of the animal world's most famous champions." 1822 Dyhouse, Carol. GIRLS GROWING UP IN LATE VICTORIAN AND EDWARDIAN ENGLAND.
Routledge & Kegan Paul, London, 1981, first edition.
224 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 071000821X "Girls learn about 'femininity' from childhood onwards, first through their relationships with the family, and later from their teachers and peers. Using sources which vary from diaries to Inspector's reports, Carol Dyhouse studies the socialization of middle- and working-class girls in late-Victorian and early-Edwardian England. She traces the ways in which schooling at all social levels at this time tended to reinforce lessons in the sexual division of labour and patterns of authority between men and women, which girls had already learned at home. In Elementary Schools, social anxieties about 'National Efficiency', high infant-mortality figures and a declining b i rth-rate helped to shape the curriculum offered to working-class girls through the period 1870-1920. The author then focuses on the emergence of a social psychology of adolescent girlhood in the early-twentieth century with its educational implic at ions. Finally, she examines the relationship between feminism and girls' education through the period studied." Small faint area of soiling on fornt board. The present study is a detailed examination of a selected number of representative writers, artists, and intellectuals who spent a considerabl e amount of time abroad. 1832 Eber, Dorothy Harley. WHEN THE WHALERS WERE UP NORTH: INUIT MEMORIES FROM THE EASTERN ARCTIC.
McGill-Queen's University Press, Kingston / Montreal, 1989.
187 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0773507027 Map endpapers. B&w and colour illustrations. "During the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, whaling vessels from Britain and America plied their trade in great numbers in t he waters off the Eastern Arctic of North America. The heyday of whaling has, until now, been documented soley from the perspective of the whalers, never from the viewpoint of the Inuit, whose lives were touched - and sometimes destroyed - by their presence. Here, finally, is a rich view from the perspective of the Inuit, who wlecomed the whalers and served on their crews. The author tells a story drawn from oral memories, a story which will soon disappear with the last Inuit generation to have seen the whalers. Illuminated by a remarkable collection of drawings, photographs, and illustrations, many in full colour, tales are told of when the whalers first appeared on the north-east coast of Baffin Island, how they set up land station s in the whale-rich waters of Cumberland Sound, and how they eventually pushed on into Hudson Bay. During this time the Inuit not only fed and clothed the whalers, they hunted with them, adding to the whalers' wealth. Our understanding of change i n Inuit life is often linked to the fur traders, who arrived in the North fifty years after the arrival of the whalers. In truth it is the Inuit's close contact with the foreign world of the whalers which maked the beginning of a change in pervious ly undisturbed Inuit culture and tradition." Minor edge wear. Allen Lane, (London, 1999), Ist ed.
228 pp, 8vo, HC. "In a series of unusually thought-provoking conversations, Umberto Eco, Stephen Jay Gould, Jean Delumeau and Jean-Claude Carriere examine our preoccupations at the end of this millenium, cast back to the fears and hopes of previous generations, and consider the challenges to come. Mixing the humorous with the profound, they tackle a vast range of fundamental questions which have long taxed the minds not only of our greatest thinkers, but of most of the rest of us too. A s f o ur great wtinesses to our closing century, each has his own perspective and expertise to offer. Stephen Jay Gould sets about unravelling the mysteries surounding the history of the calendar, while Umberto Eco tells us how he makes his diag no si s o f the mental state of the planet surfing the byways of the Web. Jean-Claude Carriere talks of the virtures of doing things slowly, and Jean Delumeau reminds us that dreams contribute in the same way as acts do to the shaping of our desti nie s. F asc in ating, challenging and unnerving - no less than you would expect from such a distinguished group (this book) takes its place in the great tradition of human enquiry." 1841 Edgerton, Robert B. WARRIOR WOMEN: THE AMAZONS OF DAHOMEY AND THE NATURE OF WAR.
Westview, Boulder, Colorado, 2000, first edition.
196 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0813337119 B&w illustrations, map. "(A)lthough warfare is typically conducted by men, in various places and at various times, women have fought bravely and well, and in the West African kingdom of Dahomey during the nineteenth century, they formed an elite corps of a successful army. Many European visitors to Dahomey commented favorably on their military bearing, finding them more impressive in discipline and maneuver than male Dahomean soldiers. When France invaded Dahomey in the early 1890s, their superior weapons won the war, but all those French officers and men who wrote about their bloody battles against Dahomey declared not only that these women warriors were superior to male Dahomean soldiers but also that they were the equals of the French. Edgerton describes the history of these 'Amazons' (as they became known) and their recruitment, training, and battle experience. Of particular interest to scholars interested in culture and gender today, these women believed that in order for them to carry out their martial roles, they had to transform themselves into men. How this was done, how the Amazons lived and fought, and what their experiences might mean for the understanding of women and warfare both in the past and the present are the subjects of this book." Bridget Williams, (Wellington, 1991).
241 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), soft cover. B&w photographs. The second volume of New Zealand poet Lauris Edmond's autobiography. "For Lauris Edmond this was married life in its time of greatest fulfilment, with six children in a small New Zealand countr y town in the fifties. They were rich years, full of laughter and friendship and solidity - the way, she supposed, women's lives were meant to be. But dreams and expectations change, the experiences of loss and uncertainty impinge, and as the si x t ies became the seventies the world shifted on its axis. Women everywhere were questioning the old, familiar loyalties; for Lauris there was no ignoring the promptings of a talent - and a way of being - too long supressed...the remarkable accoun t of a woman's journey from conformity to a tentative and painful independence; of the growth and death of a marriage, and the questioning and discovery of self. Eloquent and assured, this is autobiography at its most revealing, and confirms Lauri s Edm onds as an outstanding prose writer." The Franco question, though apparently not of the first importance in the evolution of Cold War policy, nevertheless haunted British and American governments during this period. It posed a problem which epitomizes the difficulty of dealing with pariah regimes. As such it highlights for h i storians the attempts of these two governments to straddle the contradictions inherent in the emerging dual system of the United Nations, or internationalism, on the one hand, and the older system of balance of power, played out by the super power s as the Cold War. Set as it is in the domestic and international context, it also exemplifies problems faced today by individual governments and by the United Nations in dealing with questions of intervention or non-intervention in distasteful reg im es." Taking six of the most popular historical periods, (this book) shows how re-enactors and other hist ory enthusiasts can recreate the uniforms, equipment and life-style of past warriors and their comrades, male and female. The six periods are: Roman; Vikings and Saxons; Medieval; English Civil War; Napoleonic and American Civil Wars; World War On e and World War Two. Re-enactment is a growing hobby in Britain, Europe and the United States, with tens of thousands of people recreating the battles and living quarters of past ages. Every aspect of past living is examined, including the tactic s and organization of armies, the development of medicine and care for the wounded, the role of women in war and peace, the manufacture and craftsmanship of uniforms and weapons. Step by step master classes show how to recreate uniforms and equipme nt , establish authentic camps, and interpret all these activities as both education and entertainment for the general public. An extensive directory of re-enactment societies and suppliers in the United States and Europe completes this essential b ook for all re-enactors, history enthusiasts and history teachers. 1874 Elliot-Wright, Philipp. Colour plates by Christa Hook. RIFLEMAN: ELITE SOLDIERS OF THE WARS AGAINS NAPOLEON. MILITARY ILLUSTRATED.
Publishing News, London, 2000.
144 pp, 4to (12" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1903040027 Profusely illustrated in colour and b&w with photographs, reproductions, uniform studies, maps/battle plans. "(T)ells the story of one of the great military elites of the past - the Rifleman. It shows him at his finest moment in the green jacket of the 95th Rifles in the wars against Napoleon. It reveals the way he fought, the weapons and equipment he used, and the tactics he perfected. First-hand accounts are matched by brilliant colour reconstructions of the Rifleman, bringing the reality of the battle to the reader. The invention of the rifle gave a new twist to warfare. Hunters became soldiers who fought in green and hid behind cover - the days of brightly-uniformed ranks of men exchanging volleys of fire was over. Developed in the forests of North America, the Rifleman revolutionised the art of war. In the campaigns against Napoleon, units of British Riflemen took on French light infantry armed with muskets. Trained to act independently and with a respect for his own skills, the Rifleman was an exceptionally intelligent warrior, the forefather of today's combat soldier. His greatest moments in the Peninsular War and at the battle of Waterloo are vividly described in first-hand accounts, but some of the myths of the Rifleman are also punctured." Terror and violence became their unmistakable hallmark...They range from the mystery cults of classical Greece, the secret religion of Mithras and other Roman cults, the sinister Knights Templar and the Middle Easte rn Assassins, who were active during the Crusades, the nineteenth-century Indian Thugs, the Japanese ninja clans and the Triads. Wherever and whenever they flourished, these warrior cults had their own strict codes and rituals, and today they pro v i de a fascinating and disturbing insight into the perennial desire to unite for a single purpose. When combined with murderous and bloodthirsty compulsions, these groups became feared and reviled. Ian Allan, London, 1970, first edition.
224 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Color frontispiece, b&w photographs, tables. "The London Midland & Scottish Railway was the largest of the four group companies formed in the 1923 amalgamation of more than 100 railway conce rns up and down the country. Its tracks stretched from London to Thurso in the far north of Scotland, to Swansea and Holyhead in Wales and to Shoeburyness on the southeast coast of Essex. But for all its size, and the fact that two of its consit u t ents, the London & North Western and the Midland, were among the largest of the pre-amalgamation companies, the early history of the LMS was not very happy; rivalries between men bred in the Crewe and Derby traditions clearly affected much of th e co mpany's policy. It took practically ten years for the LMS to sort out its problems, particularly on the motive power side, for, not until 1932, when William Stanier was appointed Chief Mechanical Engineer and who provided the LMS with a locomo ti ve fleet second to none, did the fortunes of the LMS turn for the better. All this and much more is ably described in this book, written by one of the foremost authors of railway history." From training and combat to discipline and morale, 'On the Front Lines' illuminates the experience of war as no book has before." Interior - previous owner's embossed stamp on first and last page, one very small cor ne r crease, otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. 1885 Ellis, John. EYE-DEEP IN HELL: TRENCH WARFARE IN WORLD WAR I.
Pantheon, New York, 1976, first American edition.
215 pp, large 8vo (9 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0394496647 B&w photographs, map, diagrams. "(A) masterfully detailed reconstruction of what life was like for millions of men who lived and died in the trenches of World War I. Continuing his trail-blazing approach to the study of war and militarism, Ellis reveals the physical and spiritual environment of this unique world, the rituals of battle, the habits of daily lfie, and the constant struggle of men to find meaning in a world of excruciating boredom and impending death. (He) beings with a description of the physical construction of the trenches, their size and shape, their peculiarities and characteristics. The soldiers' daily life is succinctly portrayed: how they ate, drank, slept, joked, fought off rats and lice, how their sexual needs were met, and how they endured the marches and patrols. But it is in the ways men sought meaning in their daily lives that Ellis reveals the true nature of warfare. In analyzing how the habits and regulations so dear to the military mind became entrenched in the organization of the battlefield, (this book) brilliantly depicts the instinctive desire of men in battle to create order out of chaos. Through an exploration of the personal reflections of soldiers and the letters they wrote home, Ellis discovers a literature of compassion, courage, and a capacity to endure which arose from an environment of filth, decay, and death. It captures a world in which men fought, for reasons they hardly understood, for a future most had ceased to believe in by the end of the war." Small faint erased pencil marks on free front end paper, slight fading to boards edges, small area of color fading on rear board. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, light fading to color on spine, faint small water mark on inside surface of rear panel. Very Good/Very Good-
