144 pp, 10" H. "The story (Ardizzone) tells here is of his own childhood up to the time he started his career as an artist. Evoking a period as well as having a lot of fun remembering, it is fragmentary, charming and very much alive, sometimes because a particular character, escapade or adventure is sharply etched in his memory, sometimes, on the contrary, because the edges are blurred and the episode or person half-forgotten. Like his children's books, there are illustrations on every page, half of them in colour and half in black and white. Many of these drawings (which were all made specially for this book) are among his best work and together with the text they make up a unique 'autobiograpical fragment' - a kind of children's book for grown ups, which the publishers think that a great many children will also enjoy if their parents allow them to read it." Edward Ardizzone "is probably best-known and most-loved for the Tim and Lucy books which he wrote himself as well as illustrated." Bump at top of rear hinge, very light lean to spine. Dust jacket has wrinkling at top of spine and at top edge of front panel, light toning to spine and top of front panel - very light toning elsewhere, light wrinkling at bottom of spine and top/bottom of flap-folds.
