176 pp, 8 3/4" H. Dark blue cloth with gilt lettering/banding on spine. Four maps (two fold-out), b&w photographs (most with a noticeable blue tint). "The expedition described in the present work originated as an accessory outgrowth to Amundsen's plan to fly across the Pole from Point Barrow in North America. In the drafting of this scheme there was a miscalculation, and it transpired that Amundsen would never be able to reach Spitzbergen with the supplies of fuel his airplane was comp-etent to carry. The upshot of this was that, at the instigation of Consul Hammer of Seattle (one of Amundsen's personal friends), the Junkers Works went a small flying expedition to Spitzbergen. The purpose of this expedition was to fly from Spitzbergen northward across the ice-pack, and upon this ice-pack to make a cache of necessaries at the spot Amundsen was expected to reach, thus facilitat-ing the explorer's crossing of the Polar Circle. (When Amundsen changed) his plan, after the members of the expedition had already crossed the arctic circle, they promptly decided to use the plane for photographic researches in Spitzbergen. This book contains a compendium of the results." Contents: Introduction by Professor Kurt Wegener (General Characteristics of the Expedition / Spitzbergen / Aims of Airplane Photography / What can be Learned from the Photographs); Photography from Airplane, by Professor A. Miethe; Geographical Value of the Photographs, by Captain H. Boykow; The First Arctic Aviators, by Airforce Lieutenant Walter Mittelholzer (Foreword / En Route / In Spitzbergen / Envoy). Very light browning to free endpapers, scattered foxing on page 96, 97 and illustration page between them, creases at top corner of front fold-out map, soft crease at top corner of pages 95 to 105, darkening and scattered foxing marks on edges of text block, slight corner bumps, wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, waviness in cloth at fore-edge of boards, faint liquid mark at fore-edge of front board.
