"This is the famous Rene who was transformed by three years of war from an unknown pilot of the Reserve into one of the great leaders of Free France in the air, Pierre Clostermann's hero and commanding officer. In 1940 Rene made his daring escape from Oran in an unserviceable plane seized from under the very noses of the authorities. This was a flight not away from danger, but into the thick of the Battle of Britain. He fought with the R.A.F. in Hurricanes and Spitfires, attacking enemy shipping, sweeping over France, giving air-cover to the Dieppe landing, duelling with the Luftwaffe. His exceptional courage and integrity, his powers of leadership and skill as an aerial tactician quickly won the admiration of his superiors. Rene's airborne career culminated at Biggin Hill where he commanded the fighter wing and it was he who shot down the 1,000th German plane recorded by the fighter group there shortly before his death. In the end, his greatest wish was granted, for he had written in his diary: 'If I am not to survive the war, let me at least have the satisfaction of falling to the enemy's fire'. The personal magnetism and sincerity of 'Commandant Rene' make (this) an original and valuable contribution to the literature of the war in the air."
