"This fascinating story of the life of one 'ordinary' Canadian is social history at its best - a first hand account of the home life, entertainment, working conditions and methods, manners and morals of past generations. Born in London, Ontario in 1888, S.J. Ferns left school at age 13 to throw himself into the struggle for existence. He describes the Harvester's Special trains, the work of threshing gangs in the Weset, his apprenticeship as a bricklayer, and his subsequent travels around a young and growing country to find work. Many of the events which have become significant historically - Calgary's first Stampede, Alberta's first oil strike, the opening of Detroit's first Ford plant - gain new meaning when seen through the eyes of one who had some personal involvement or was personally affected by them." Very light wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very light edge wear/wrinkling, two tiny edge tears archivally taped.
