B&w frontispiece, fold-out map. A facsimile of the edition published by Sampson Low, Marston, Searle & Rivington, London, 1889. "In the early 1880's, an adventurous young Englishman set off for a look at the New World, and soon found himself swept up in the current of immense historical forces that were shaping the young Canadian nation. He joined the North-West Mounted Police, and during the next five years he witnessed the rise and fall of Louis Riel, the subjugation of the Indians, and the opening of the West, from the point of view of the common soldier. He was determined that the outside world should know the real truth about the Canadian West, and not the romanticized, idealized image that was promoted to lure immigrants to this harsh and often terrifying territory. His account of his gruelling trek from Regina to his post at Prince Albert, Saskatchwan, is unforgettable. He gives a day-by-day account of the tense months of the rebellion in the North-West. He observed Riel at close hand, as his prison guard, and his notes on his prisoner shed new light on a controversial figure. Later, he helped to subdue the Indians, and to quash the illicit whiskey trade, and he tells of the discovery of vast amounts of coal in the Souris district. The tale he tells is a far cry from the modern technicolor version of the Mounties and the old West, and it is a must for any reader who wants to know what Canada was really like one hundred years ago." Dust jacket has areas of light wrinkling at top edge.
