"The Indians told stories to explain how their world was made; they told stories to preserve their history for themselves and their children; they told stories because there were always those who wanted to listen. Their stories were handed down from generation to generation and in recent times have been collected by anthropologists working among the surviving tribes. The eleven stories retold in this book by Isabel Barclay are all about birds and animals. One or two come from the Prairies and the Pacific Northwest; the rest belong to the people of the eastern woodlands. The illustrations have been taken from a seventeenth-century manuscript in the Public Archives of Canada know as 'Les raretes des Indes'. It is believed to be the work of a young Jesuit, Louis Nicolas, who recorded in these extraordinary and beautiful drawings his impressions of the strange animals who lived in the wilderness to which he had come." Contents: The Storytellers; How the World was Made; The Sun, the Moon and the Stars; How the Animals Got their Names; Water Spider and the First Fire; The Coming of Summer and the Fishing Star; How Raven Came to be Black; Rabbit and Otter; Why the Loon Wobbles when he Walks; Partridge and the Great Wonder; Fox and Bear; Song of the Forest. Minor edge wear to boards, bookstore label on free front endpaper, very small light stain on fore-edge of text block. Dust jacket has light fading to spine, flap-folds and edges; one small closed tear; very light edge wrinkling.
