The changes in the face of Europe that have marked the growth of nations, that went on through the Middle Ages, and have continued to the time of Wellington and Napoleon, the Franco-Prussian War, and to the merging to-day of the military in the industrial struggle, may be followed in the coloured maps which come first in the volume." The b&w line maps include: "Fifteen Decisive Battles of the World", "Famous British Battles" and "Maps Illustrating Districts Connected with Famous Books and Their Authors". There is also a "Pronoucing Gazetteer", "A Gazetteer of Towns and Places in Europe having a Literary or Historic Interest" and an Index.
