"A hand-made toy has a particular appeal; if it is not perfect, it will probably have personality - and expert workmanship will make it outstanding, provided always that the design is good. Very few tools are required for toymaking, and the technique is not difficult to pick up. Moreover, the work gets increasingly interesting as experience is gained. The circus theme gives plenty of scope for imagination; trappings and trimmings can be varied endlessly, and the patterns adapted to make new costumes. With slight alterations to the facial expressions, entirely new characters can be introduced. These figures and animals are good as a group, and have therefore been made to scale. As the animals range from five to sixteen inches in height, full directions for enlarging or reducing the patterns have been included." Introduction.
