204 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w plates. "Princess Bibesco has taken for her novel the story of the son of Napoleon III. Brought up in the Bonaparte tradition and used as a political instrument by his parents, who exploited his popularity with the French people as a means to consolidate their regime, he was forced to flee France when the Prussians inflicted the crushing defeat of 1870. He came to England and later became an officer in the British Army and was killed i n the Zulu War. Princess Bibesco tells the story of his life and his love affair with an English girl with all the vividness and delicacy which characterizes her historical novels such as the well-known 'Katia', on which was based the fil m . " F o x i n g on endpapers, light soiling a few tiny foxing marks on edges of textblock, wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, light edge rubbing, very small bubble in cloth on front board.
