"....(brings) together for the first time the many references to Ulverston in the local books of the last two-hundred years. With them there is muc h new and hitherto unpublished information, the whole being skilfully wrought into a continuous story. In it the growth of the town during eight-hundred years is traced, and the life of its people, their work and pleasure, their high-momen t s a n d t h eir troubles, revealed. The author feels he has written a social history, one that not only lets the reader see Ulverston, but lights up in a small degree the larger life of England of which the Story of Ulverston forms part."
