Born in 1924, he made his Toronto Symphony conducting debut at the age of eighteen. He went on to become the artistic director of the Winnipeg Symphony, a conductor with the Toronto Symphony, and a guest conductor of virtually every major symphony orchestra in Canada. Feldbrill was also the first conductor-in-residence at the University of Toronto's Faculty of Music, from 1968 to 1982. However, what really set Feldbrill apart was his limitless enthusiasm and support of Canadian music and young musicians, as well as his insistence on playing the music of Canadian composers despite the reluctance of some orchestral managers and the initial opposition of audiences at the time. In doing so he reached out to young people and trained many to take their places as members of Canadian orchestras from coast to coast." Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling, minor rubbing.

Among his many accomplishments, Tyrrell discovered Canada's first dinosaur, Albertosaurus, and an Ice Age glacier he named Keewatin. He risked his own and his companions' lives charting the Dubawnt and Kazan river networks west of Hudson Bay, and rescued the maps and records of Canada's great geographer, David Thompson, from oblivion. After he failed to find gold in the Klondike, Tyrrell gambled on buying a gold mine in Kirkland Lake, Ontario, and won millions." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. THE GREAT FUR LAND OR SKETCHES FROM LIFE IN THE HUDSON'S BAY TERRITORY., Robinson, H.M.
86 Robinson, H.M. THE GREAT FUR LAND OR SKETCHES FROM LIFE IN THE HUDSON'S BAY TERRITORY.
Toronto Coles 1975 Facsimile Edition. Hard Cover Fine Very Good- Charles Gasche.
348 pp, 8 5/8" H. Burgundy cloth with black title block, gilt lettering/banding on spine, gilt lettering/banding on front board - one of the Coles Canadian Collection. B&w illustrations. A facsimile of the edition published by G.P. Putnam's Sons, New York, 1879. "In approximately 1870, one H.M. Robinson, writer and traveller, journeyed by dog sled to the Hudson's Bay Territory. The account of his months there is fascinating not only for its first-hand look at life in northern Canada, but also for this cultured man's view of it. The book includes excursions by dog sled and canoe, as well as hunting expeditions. It documents life in a Hudson's Bay Company fort, in a fur-hunters' camp, and in an Indian settlement. There are absorbing accounts of voyageurs, the Blackfeet Indians, 'nomadic' hunters, and medicine men, as well as breath-taking descriptions of the landscape. Since little knowledge of the North was generally available, Mr. Robinson's commentary helped to shape the attitudes of early Canadians, thus eventually influencing government policy. Through this book, modern readers can achieve a more complete idea of what it was like to be alive in the North in the 1870's. But more than that, we are able to trace the roots of the nation's successes and failures in dealing with people and the natural resources of the vast expanse once known as the Hudson's Bay Territory." Dust jacket has light wdge wear/wrinkling, two taped (inside) edge tears - one with creases, minor rubbing and soiling.

THE SELECTED JOURNALS OF L.M. MONTGOMERY. VOLUME IV: 1929-1935., Rubio, Mary & Waterston, Elizabeth, editors. (L.M. Montgomery - Lucy Maud Montgomery.)
87 Rubio, Mary & Waterston, Elizabeth, editors. (L.M. Montgomery - Lucy Maud Montgomery.) THE SELECTED JOURNALS OF L.M. MONTGOMERY. VOLUME IV: 1929-1935.
Toronto Oxford University Press 1998 0195413814 / 9780195413816 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
439 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs, maps. The fourth volume of 'The Selected Journals of L.M. Montgomery' "covers a tumultuous period in the writer's life. By 1929 she was 54 years old and known world-wide as the author of 'Anne of Green Gables' and many other books, yet this was also a time of numerous setbacks: the stock market crash, a drop in royalties from her many books, the need to provide her two sons with a university education while her husband's modest church salary was often in arrears, and the fact that many loans she made to friends and family were not repaid. She faced personal crises in relations with her sons and her husband and there was furious controvery in her husband's parish, Norval Presbyterian Church. She also felt concerns over her own mental state and she became the unwilling object of a young woman's declarations of passionate love. Yet this was not a period without joy: the volume opens with happy travels to Prince Edward Island and western Canada and ends with her looking forward with great excitement to a new life in Toronto. Besides providing an intimate look into the daily life of one of the world's best-loved authors, these journals can also be read as a fascinating social history of the early twentieth century. For example, Montgomery's health concerns provide intriguing insights into the state of medical practices. Readers may shudder slightly when a bout of asthma is treated with strychnine tablets or a 'bad chill' brings out a compound of arsenic." Minor wrinkling at top of spine. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top of spine.

92 Snow, Hank. With Jack Ownbey and Bob Burris. THE HANK SNOW STORY.
Urbana University of Illinois Press / Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame 1994 0252020898 / 9780252020896 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Near Fine
555 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "(Traces Hank Snow's) life from humble beginnings, through his emergence as an entertainer in Canada, the United States, and throughout the world, to his stature as one of the most influential figures in country music today. But more than a rags-to-riches memoir, this book presents Hank's life and career in his own voice, with remarkable candor and incredible detail. It provides the first extensive look at the early development of country music in Canada, reveals the inner workings of the music industry (including Hank's vital and unsung role in launching Elvis Presley's career), frankly discusses the nonglamorous side of stardom, and offers the reflections of an outspoken artist who has been professionally involved with country music for nearly sixty years. Through Ernest Tubb's intercession, he made his debut on Nashville's Grand Ole Opry. Disheartened by the lack of audience response, Hank nearly abandoned his dream. Then he recorded a song he had written, 'I'm Movin' On'. It climbed to the top of the charts, staying at number one for twenty-nine weeks. More hits followed, and his life and career changed forever. Over the years, Hank has entertained servicepeople on military bases in Korea, Europe, and Vietnam. Remembering his own (difficult) childhood, he established the Hank Snow Foundation for the Prevention of Child Abuse. (He was) elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame and to the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences Hall of Fame." Minor twist to spine. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling otherwise clean and bright.

93 Stewart, Robert. SAM STEELE: LION OF THE FRONTIER.
Toronto Doubleday Canada 1979 038513598X / 9780385135986 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Fair Inscribed By Author
303 pp, 8 3/8" H. Map endpapers, b&w photographs. Inscribed on title page: "To Mr. Walter Loudon / an old Nor'Wester / Robert Stewart". "Young Sam Steele joined the North-West Mounted Police at its founding in the spring of 1873. His physical strength, skill with a horse, and determined character made him an ideal recruit for the fledgling force faced with the task of policing an area the size of Western Europe. Those first Mounties, ill-equipped and undermanned as they were, managed to bring order to a vast frontier and made possible the preservation of the fragile Canadian confederation. As he rose through the ranks, (he) took part in the great and small events of the opening of the Canadian West. Whether dealing with the refugee Sioux Chief Sitting Bull or tracking down cattle rustlers and murderers - and then dispensing justice in a tent courtroom - Steele displayed a combination of bravery, commonsense, fairness, and ingenuity. Thanks to Sam and the thirty men under him, not a mile of the Canadian Pacific Railway was lost to lawlessness during its construction through the prairies. Durng the gold rush of '98, he gained the respect of the roughnecks and dance hall girls alike in Dawson City, becoming known as the Lion of the Yukon. As commander of Lord Strathcona's Horse in the Boer War, Fighting Sam and his Big Stirrups rode the veldt as they had the Canadian prairie. This is a rich and exciting biography of the most famous Mounted Policeman of his day; it is also the story of a fascinating and formative period in Canadian history." Slight wrinkling at bottom of spine, tiny scuff on front board, one tiny corner bump, a few tiny bumps on bottom edge of front board, two ssmall scuffs to fore-edge of text block. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has several tiny chips and small tears archivally taped, small edge creases, light soiling on rear panel, light liquid stain at bottom of rear flap-fold, two 3" tears on front panel with old tape on inside, slight browning.

100 Wilson, Lois. TURNING THE WORLD UPSIDE DOWN: A MEMOIR.
Toronto Doubleday Canada 1989 0385252277 / 9780385252270 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+
258 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "Throughout her life Lois Wilson has fought against convention, apathy and inequality. Born in Winnipeg in 1925, in 1965 she became one of the first women, married and with children, to receive ordination as a United Church minister. In 1980 she was elected moderator, making her the first woman in Canada to lead a mainstream denomination. She worked as an indefatigable campaigner for the 'social gospel', bringing the church to the wider community through innovative programs of public participation. (This) is a memoir of conscience, faith and love - be it Wilson's love for her family, her community, her lifelong friend Margaret Laurence, or for the oppressed and outcast around the globe. Never one to shy away from controversy, she challenges us with her views on feminism, homosexual ordination, disarmament, ecumenism, and with her call for a radical restructuring of the world economy. The Christian gospel demands an active, compassionate engagement with the world. Lois Wilson opens our eyes to what that really means." Light wrinkling at top of spine, shallow bump on top edge of rear board. Dust jacket has small corner crease on rear flap, minor wrinkling at top of spine.
