83 Aubrac, Lucie. Translated by Konrad Bieber with the assistance of Betsy Wing. Introduction by Margaret Collins Weitz. OUTWITTING THE GESTAPO.
University of Nebraska Press, Lincoln, 1993, book club edition.
235 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w illustrations. "Lucie Aubrac was a young woman of Catholic and peasant background, teaching history in a Lyon's girls' school and newly married to Raymond, a Jewish engineer, when World War II broke out and divided France. Lucie and Raymond, living in the Vichy zone, soon joined the resistance movement that formed in opposition to the Nazis and their collaborators. 'We had the incredible good fortune', writes Lucie Aubrac, 'to l i v e a s ourselves - we did not have to adopt false identities or go into hiding - until the spring of 1943'. (This) is her harrowing account of the months of her most audacious participation in the Resistance: the months when, pregnant with her s ec on d c hi l d, she planned and took part in raids to free captive comrades - including her own husband, under Nazi death sentence - from the prisons of Klaus Barbie, the infamous 'Butcher of Lyon'." OTHER LOSSES: AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE MASS DEATHS OF GERMAN PRISONERS AT THE HANDS OF THE FRENCH AND AMERICANS AFTER WORLD WAR II., Bacque, James.
84 Bacque, James. OTHER LOSSES: AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE MASS DEATHS OF GERMAN PRISONERS AT THE HANDS OF THE FRENCH AND AMERICANS AFTER WORLD WAR II.
Toronto Stoddart 1989 0773722696 / 9780773722699 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
248 pp, 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs and drawings. "In the U.S. Army prison camps of western Germany at the end of World War II, almost four million German soldiers were held prisoner outdoors, in barbed-wire enclosures, with little or no food and water, for many months. The French Army, which took some 630,000 prisoners from the Americans to use as reparations labor, starved and mistreated them so badly that likely 250,000 died. In the American camps, at least 750,000 died. Most were soldiers of the Wehrmacht who surrendered on May 8, 1945, but many scores of thousands were women, children and old men. The deaths were simply listed as 'OTHER LOSSES". In painstaking, wide-ranging research, the author has interviewed hundreds of prisoners, guards and army officers and has amassed many thousands of pages of evidence from Army archives in Paris, Koblenz, London, Washington and Ottawa. He was ably assisted by senior U.S. Army historian Col. Ernest F. Fisher. How the public was fooled, the U.S. State Department co-opted, the International Committee of the Red Cross deceived, the press negated, the U.S. Senate neutered, books censored, archives destroyed and senior officials inveigled into the coverup - all this is outlined in a work that destroys the genial myths about Allied war aims and exposes the sources of cynical Cold War propaganda that blamed the Russians for all the deaths among these prisoners." Slight bump at top of spine. Dust jacket has minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, very light browning at top/bottom edges of flaps, very light rubbing, tiny scuff on front panel.

Prima, Rocklin, CA, 1992, first edition.
192 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1559581425 Map endpapers, b&w illustrations. "In German-occupied France in 1940, only a few people refused to give up the great ideals of their country - liberty, equality, and fraternity. O ne of these was Raoul Laporterie. Starting right after the fall of France, he supplied false documents, money, transport, and shelter to more than 1,600 people. Those rescued were chiefly Sephardic Jews of Bordeaux, but also included a co v e y o f n uns, some French soldiers evading prison camps, and Allied flyers fleeing captivity. He was assisted by his wife, Laure, and his daughter, Irene, his employees in his clothing stores, and all the residents of the village of Bascons, ne ar t h e bo r de r between Occupied and Vichy France, where he was mayor. Risking death daily, Laporterie managed to outmaneuver and fool the Germans repeatedly. A true Christian, he loved others regardless of the consequences. Today, at ag e 9 4, he ha s rec ei ved m a ny honours from the governments of France and Israel. This is his dramatic story." Minor edge wear, minor browning on bottom front edge. London Viking 2012 0670917559 / 9780670917556 Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+
466 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs, floor plans, map, family tree. "At 6 a.m. on 21 April 1940 John, the 9th Duke of Rutland, and one of Britain's wealthiest men, ended his days, virtually alone, lying on a makeshift bed in a dank, cramped suite of rooms in the servants' quarters of his own home, Belvoir Castle. For weeks, as his health deteriorated, his family, his servants - even the King's doctor - had pleaded with him to come out, but he had refused. After his death, his son and heir, Charles, the 10th Duke of Rutland, ordered that the rooms be locked up and they remained untouched for sixty years. What lay behind this extraordinary set of circumstances? (The author) unravels a complex and compelling tale of love, honour and betrayal, played out in the grand salons of Britain's stately homes at the turn of the twentieth century, and on the battlefields of the Western Front." 88 Bailey, Hilary. CASSANDRA, PRINCESS OF TROY.
Jonathan Cape, London, (1993), Ist edition.
325 pp, large 8vo, hard cover in dust jacket. Cassandra, having lived quietly on a farm for twenty years, begins to write her reminiscences of the past. It is a "tragic story, taken from one of the oldest and most famous tales ever told - the war between the Greeks and the Trojans. It begins with Helen's flight, with Paris of Troy, from her husband. It tells of how a Greek army crossed the sea to attack Troy and bring back Helen, of the fall of Troy and its terrible aftermath. In this wonderfully vivid historical novel the author imagines Cassandra, the Trojan prophetess, did not die as in the legend, but lived on in hiding for many years. As she begins to write, Cassandra believes she is free to tell her story, but it is not so - there are still secrets to be uncovered and her own tale has not ended...This marvellous and moving novel tells of the eternal forces of human life - about war and its consequences for men and women, about courage, feud(s), revenge and fated love." The biographies reveal the early communities of the bay and the escarpment from early settlement, through war and rebellion to the emerging community of the mid and late ni n e t e e n t h century. The figures included represent a broad cross-section of life: politicians, clergy, merchants, settlers, actors, artists, and even criminals. In frontier California 130 years ago, English immigrant Eadweard Muybridge managed to capture time and play it back on a screen, inventing stop-motion photography and moving pictures, breakthrough technologies that ushered in our age of visual media. Bankrolling his endeavor was tycoon (and former California governor) Leland Stanford, who built the west half of the transcontinental railroad and personally drove in the last golden spike. Stanford's particular obsession was whether the four hooves of a running horse ever left the ground all at once, and with Muybridge he found an answer. 223 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w photographs, reproductions. "British army wives 'on the strength' have campaigned alongside their men since the earliest days of the standing army. They have had to maintain their marriages and some semblance of home life on camps and stations in every quarter of the world, during peace and war. (The author) brings alive for us stories of heroines whose love and loyalty helped resign them to taking second place to the Army in their husband's lives, and enabled them to keep house and bring up children in alien and often dangerous surroundings. She discusses snobberies and superstitions, traditions and taboos, and with wit and humour treats the 'colonels' ladies and Judy O'Gradys' alike. History, anecdote and personal reminiscences are combined in this book, which includes vivid extracts from letters, diaries and memoirs, some of which have not previously been published. Many of the book's illustrations are provided from a unique collection of photographs taken by a pioneer of photography, Henry Wood - Veronica Bamfield's grandfather - in the course of his military career."
