298 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H). Eight b&w plates plus fold-out map - collated. Includes the author's introduction to her novel, "Mark Hurdlestone". "Mrs. Moodie, a refined and sophisticated person by upbringing and inclination, looks, not back, but about her at the relatively advanced society which had grown up in the clearings along the 'front' of the St. Lawrence and Lake Ontario. Here we are concerned, not with the woodsman's axe and the primitive struggle against nature, not with the solitary but with social man. Mrs. Moodie is quite sure that this society is in a much healthier condition than the one she had known in England: She associates the improvement with the mixing of the classes in the new society and thinks that the absence of convention and prejudice in the relations between various occupational groups is partly due to a 'friendly' American influence. She likes the greater liveliness in social intercourse, and better still she likes the way in which the stripping away of the old preconceptions makes possible a true estimate of a man's worth which she sees simply as the sum of his native ability, his industry, his moral training and his education." First published in 1853 . Minor browning to pages, light cigarette odor, a few tiny light stains in top margin of pages 264 & 265, light browning to edges of textblock, minor wrinking at top/bottom of spine, minor soiling on bottom of textblock. 87 Mosier, John. THE MYTH OF THE GREAT WAR: A NEW MILITARY HISTORY OF WORLD WAR I
New York HarperCollins 2001 0060196769 / 9780060196769 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
381 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w maps. "Based on a decade of research into previously unused French and German sources, (this book) shows what actually happened at the front as the participants perceived it at the time, as opposed to what French and British commanders and governments claimed. John Mosier, who visited all the major battlefields, describes and analyzes campaigns that are routinely neglected or ignored and shows why conventional accounts of such major battles as Verdun are incorrect. He explains how German tactics, weapons, training and leadership were consistently superior, and why the endless, ineffective attacks of the French and British with inferior weapons and battle tactics of the previous century resulted in mindless slaughter and defeat. Mosier also discusses the major military leaders on both sides - including Joffre, Petain, Foch, Gallieni, French, Haig, Wilson, Moltke, Ludendorff, Falkenhayn, Mudra, and Pershing. The French and British military controlled, suppressed, and manipulated all battlefield reports. German losses were magnified; failures became successes, defeats victories. Allied intelligence was grossly inaccurate and inadequate, and the result was a distorted picture of what was really happening. Absorbing and persuasive, 'The Myth of the Great War' is a striking new assessment of the military realities of World War I." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine, faint finger print at fore-edge of free front endpaper. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top edge, minor rubbing.

A HISTORY OF VAUGHAN TOWNSHIP: TWO CENTURIES OF LIFE IN THE TOWNSHIP., Reaman, G. Elmore. Foreword by George C.H. Snider. In Retrospect, by James M. McDonald.
100 Reaman, G. Elmore. Foreword by George C.H. Snider. In Retrospect, by James M. McDonald. A HISTORY OF VAUGHAN TOWNSHIP: TWO CENTURIES OF LIFE IN THE TOWNSHIP.
Vaughan Township Historical Society 1971 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
346 pp, small 4to (10" H). Map endpapers, b&w photographs, reproductions, drawings. "Vaughan Township, northwest of Toronto, was settled early in the history of Ontario, and presents a remarkable record of continuity alongside progress. The first families were Pennsylvania Germans who made their way to the new frontier in cavalcades of Conestoga wagons. After them came the Scots, Irish, English, and people of many other lands. This copiously-illustrated book tells the story of their settlement, and follows their descendants to the present. Separate chapters trace the evolution of government in the township; the changing forms of transportation as muscle power gave way to steam and gasoline; and developments in agriculture from the first logging bees to today's scientific cattle breeding. Each town and village in the township (including some that have disappeared) has its history told; so do the churches and schools that have been built over 170 years. For the genealogist, this is an important book, for in addition to its family histories there are hundreds of references to individual Vaughan residents, past and present. Dr. Reaman has also recorded outstanding events in the township's history, and the growth of its many societies and organizations. James M. McDonald, Township Administrator, has contributed a section, 'In Retrospect'. There are appendices and a substantial index." Minor browning in margins of pages, small bump at top edge of rear board, three tiny foxing marks at top inside of rear board, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear, several small taped edge tears - some with creases, light rubbing, minor edge browning on flaps.
