Toronto University of Toronto Press 1976 0802053815 / 9780802053817 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+
366 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. Volume 3 only. "(T)reats the depression years when King was first in Opposition and then the years after 1935 when he was once again Prime Minister; it is a masterly analysis of how one of the most enigmatic figures in Canadian history made shrewd and critical political decisions. Attention is paid in turn to his clearly successful tactics as Leader of the Opposition; the election campaign of 1935; a wide range of his domestic policies, including those on unemploy-ment, inflation, relief, and trade; and to a series of international crises - the Ethiopian crisis, the Spanish Civil War, Anschluss, and Munich - that culminated in the Second World War. At all times, King's over-riding concern was to preserve national unity at home and to avoid commitments abroad, either through the British Commonwealth or the League of Nations. We see King in his relations with other Canadian leaders - Aberhart, Pattullo, Hepburn, Duplessis, and Bennett - and with world leaders - Roosevelt, Baldwin, Chamberlain and Hitler. We also see the personal side of the man, and the link between the private and public figure." Book is clean and bright. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling.

THE CREATURE IN THE MAP: A JOURNEY TO EL DORADO., Nicholl, Charles.
84 Nicholl, Charles. THE CREATURE IN THE MAP: A JOURNEY TO EL DORADO.
New York William Morrow 1995 0688146007 / 9780688146009 First American Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
398 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w illustrations. "In May 1595, a hundred Englishmen - 'gentlemen, soldiers, rowers, boat-keepers, boys, and of all sorts' - rowed up a river in South America in search of the lost golden city of El Dorado. They were led by Sir Walter Ralegh, forty years old, ready to hazard his fading reputation on this doomed gamble. Four hundred years later Charles Nicholl follows their trail into the strange terrain of this enduring international obsession. The journey begins with Ralegh's curious 'charte' in the British Museum and leads through the labyrinthine delta of the Orinoco River and up into the rugged Guiana highlands of southern Venezuela, the setting of Conan Doyle's 'The Lost World'. A night with a Warao tobacco shaman, an encounter with the jungle-hermit Laime, bush pilot Jimmy Angel's stories of earlier days, life in the shantytowns of the region's gold diggers - these color and deepen the book's intense recollection of that original Elizabethan expedition. In this vivid reconstruction, Nicholls blends historical scholarship with idiosyncratic reportage in a unique and fascinating mix." Very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has some light wrinkling at top of spine and top edge, slight fading to some of the spine and front hinge colour.

FOLLOWING THE DRUM: WOMEN IN WELLINGTON'S WARS., Page, F.C.G., Brigadier. Foreword by Elizabeth Longford.
87 Page, F.C.G., Brigadier. Foreword by Elizabeth Longford. FOLLOWING THE DRUM: WOMEN IN WELLINGTON'S WARS.
Andre Deutsch, London, 1986, first edition.
150 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0233979603 B&w illustrations. "Although the Duke of Wellington's Peninsular War and Waterloo campaigns (1808-15) have been well documented by the great military historians, biographers and diarists of the period, many general readers are unaware that it was the custom of each regiment to be accompanied by a number of wives when it left England to go to war. Now Brigadier Page has unearthed a wealth of fascinating detail a b o u t t h ese dedicated women, who made a contribution to morale, and hence to victory, that has never before been fully acknowledged. In an elegant and lively style, he describes the selection process whereby wives drew 'To-Go' of 'Not-to-Go' t ic ke ts o u t of a hat, their life on the troopships and their semi-official role as cooks and washerwomen to the invading army. He also recounts the experiences of the large entourage of Spanish, Portuguese and French women who shared the suffe rin g a nd dan ge rs en dured by their English admirers until the fighting was over, and were very often abandoned when the troops returned home. Many of the women were faithful, courageous and hardworking, others flighty and lacking in discipline , bu t th ey all cop ed with incredible harship in order to keep their families together and to bring some light and comfort into the brutal lives of the fighting soldiers. (This book weaves) authentic historical detail in accounts of individual h erois m, tr age dy a nd c ome dy, a ll of which are tremendously engaging and very well told. Culled from diaries and memoirs of the men who fought in Wellington's campaigns, and enhanced by contemporary illustrations, these stories make a genuine contri bution to schol arshi p an d prov ide a lasting tribute to the women who followed the drum." HEMINGWAY AND FILM., Phillips, Gene D. Introduction by Carlos Baker. (Ernest Hemingway.)
90 Phillips, Gene D. Introduction by Carlos Baker. (Ernest Hemingway.) HEMINGWAY AND FILM.
Frederick Unger, New York, 1980.
192 pp, 8 3/16" H, soft cover. ISBN 0804466440 B&w photographs. "Ernest Hemingway's fiction presents the film adaptor with special problems....In his penetrating study, Gene Phillips pinpoints the difficulty in turning Hemingway's subtle fiction into movie material. Some of Hollywood's finest talents have responded to the challenge. Beginning in 1932 with Frank Borazge's 'A Farewell to Arms', starring Gary Cooper and Helen Hayes, several directors have tried their hand - Sam Wood ('For Wh om the Bell Tolls', 1943), Howard Hawks ('To Have and to Have Not', 1944), and Henry King ('The Sun Also Rises', 1957). They drew on the not inconsiderable skills of such screenwriters as Dudley Nichols, William Faulkner, and John Houston. The r e s ults met with varying success. In exploring the reasons why, the book draws added validity from interviews with many of the directors and cinematographers involved in the persistent attempts to translate Hemingway into cinematic images. Carl os B ak er's moving essay, 'Hemingway's Last Appeal', sets the tone for this thematic investigation. For the interested reader or film student, the book also includes a filmography, selected bibliography, and photographs." DAILY LIFE IN HOLLAND IN THE YEAR 1566 AND THE STORY OF MY ANCESTOR'S TREASURE CHEST., Poortvliet, Rien. Translated from the Dutch by Karin H. Ford. Calligraphy by Diane Lynch.
91 Poortvliet, Rien. Translated from the Dutch by Karin H. Ford. Calligraphy by Diane Lynch. DAILY LIFE IN HOLLAND IN THE YEAR 1566 AND THE STORY OF MY ANCESTOR'S TREASURE CHEST.
Harry N. Abrams, New York, 1992, first American edition.
208 pp, oblong (10 1/4" H x 12 1/8" D) hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0810933098 Beautifully illustrated in colour throughout. "Characteristically evocative, the words and images in 'Daily Life in Holland' are rich in detail and delicate in colo ration, and perhaps the most beautiful of any of Poortvliet's works to date. In this fascinating saga, he recreates the lives of his forebears as they toiled and celebrated their way through daily existence. He does not conjure up a romantic v i s i o n of the past - the Dutch countryside was not all tulips and windmills! There were adversity and hard work, and we learn that 1566 was an extraordinary year in Holland, marked by famine and plague, great freezes, floods and droughts, comets a nd e ar thquakes, and an invasion by the Spanish as well. Poortvliet's colorful account unfolds before us to reveal how ordinary men, women, and children lived: what kinds of clothes they wore, what their houses were like, what they ate and how th ey coo ked . How did they celebrate Christmas? What did the people do for a livng and what kind of money did they have? What did a girl's engagement ring look like? How many different kinds of swords and firearms did they have? Exploring hi s ow n r oots , Po ortvliet captures the beauty of everyday life and livelihood in turbulent sixteenth-century Holland." Tiny stain on top of text block, a few tiny dints on bottom edges of boards, previous owner's signed bookplate on half-title pa ge. Dust jack et ha s very light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, a few tiny dints on front panel, very light rubbing, very small bump on edge of spine. 92 Prucha, Francis Paul. THE SWORD OF THE REPUBLIC: THE UNITED STATES ARMY ON THE FRONTIER, 1783-1846.
Macmillan, (Toronto, 1969).
442 pp, large 8vo (9 9/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Map endpapers, b&w maps, plates. "....the story of federal troops called up to enforce paper possession with physical occupation when treaty and purchase opened up the region from the Appalachians west to the Mississippi and the vast new frontiers in the Louisiana Territory. The duties of these soldiers were to protect the settlers and to establish a military presence that maintained American rights with honor in the face of Indian intransigence and British and Spanish scheming. These soldiers, in accomplishing their mission, became farmers, roadbuilders, scientists, and lumbermen: pioneers of the new West. At Fallen Timbers, Tippecanoe, and the Thames, the federal military forces met the early challenge from the Indian nations and their British allies. Military control of strategic points on the Great Lakes and western rivers enforced American control of the fur trade. Army endeavors shored up crumbling territorial edges where Spanish and British officials or traders weakened American power. (This book) recounts vividly the Blackhawk War and the Florida War. It details the construction of western forts and tells the tragic story of the removal of Indians from the East. It is a chronicle of the transition from wilderness to hard-core settlement." Philadelphia Triangle Books 1946 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
354 pp, small 8vo (7 5/8" H). Pale orange/buff cloth with black lettering on spine, black lettering and decoration on front board. "Marco was sitting in his chair in the little private beach on rocky Spanish Cape, and he was quite dead. The dashing, handsome despoiler of women seemed to be musing no doubt on the hold he had over the frantic, desperate women in the house above him. For there was a faint smile on his strong and mocking face. But around his neck was an ugly line of red. The really startling thing about Marco's corpse was that he was naked. Under the long opera cloak draped about his virile figure, he was without coat, trousers or shirt - completely nude! Yet of all the people gathered at the house of Walter Godfrey, eccentric millionaire, on remote Spanish Cape, Marco's was the only face that did not wear the tense mask of dread. It was fortunate indeed that Ellery Queen, that amiable maestro of murder, happened to be vacationing nearby. He it is that solves the brutal and baffling case of the murdered philanderer, to the mingled horror and delight of the most hardened reader." Light browning to pages, a few pages with wrinkle at top part of page, minor edge wear, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very light edge wear/wrinkling and a few tiny tears at top/bottom of spine, minor darkening at top/bottom edges of flaps, protected in a mylar sleeve.

97 Reynolds, James. Introduction by Padraic Colum. GHOSTS IN IRISH HOUSES.
New York Creative Age Press 1947 First Edition Hard Cover Good+ Good- James Reynolds. Inscribed
283 pp, 10 3/4" H. Boldly inscribed on half title page: "All good Fortune / James Reynolds", with double underscore and a star beneath. Map of Ireland on endpapers in shades of green and white showing location of the haunted houses. 9 colour plates, including frontispiece (collated), plus 16 full page b&w drawings and 4 smaller b&w drawings. **Please note: at some time in its life, this book has been "married" to a Bonanza dust jacket of the same or similar vintage that fits it perfectly - i.e. this is not the original dust jacket.** "With senses tuned to the cry of the banshee, no people are more intimate with spirits - both horrible and friendly - than the richly imaginative Irish. In this magnificently conceived and superbly executed book, James Reynolds, Irish-born painter, horseman, and traveler, has selected and retold twenty-two folk tales from a collection of more than two hundred gathered during his life in Ireland. He invariably captures the perfect note of eerie, the terrifying, and the comic in these paintings, drawings, and this subtly polished prose; for he is 'ghost-conscious' and 'castle-conscious', as Padraic Colum says, and can describe with the words of a poet what a painter sees. Here are ghosts and demons that have flouished from the tenth to the twentieth century - the horrible, gluttonous ghost of Jason Bannott, the harpies of 'The Ghostly Catch', the madly comic ghosts of the O'Haggerty twins - all the ghosts that midnight fancy shivers to imagine." Spine color has darkened, light browning to edges of text block, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, a one inch very light red pencil line on blank page 12, a 1/8" strip of browning at top edge of page 6, slight toning in page margins, very small paper slub on chapter title page 89. Dust jacket has light browning on inside, tear (archivally taped) at top of rear panel with soft crease; light discoloration on fore-edge of front flap, at top of spine and under wrinkles in laminate on rear panel, light browming at top edge, tiny closed tear on spine.

Black Swan, Redding Ridge, CT, 1981.
115 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0933806175 Bilingual text (German and English) on facing pages. "Subtitled 'An Unofficial Rilke', the poems selected by Hamburger lie mostly outside the official canon: experiments, unfinish ed workings, drafts and fragments. If some were 'occasional pieces', they are such from the hands of a master craftsman. Largely these poems probe and explore depths and angles partially hidden by the poet's public persona. Poems expressin g u n c e r tainty, doubt and despair - as well as moments of transcendence - these intimate works further round out Rilke's complex stature, revealing a kinship to D.H. Lawrence, alongside that of Nietzsche and Holderlin." Previous owner's chop m ar k ( st am p) o n half-title page.
