Toronto Queen's Printer 1984 0774389648 / 9780774389648 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
668 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "The OPP came into existence (in 1909) with a total strength of fifty-one men, of whom forty-four were constables deployed across the vast province. By the end of World War I in 1918, only twenty-six constables were still serving with the force, but returning veterans were sought for enlistment with the provincials and the force grew, assuming every-increasing responsibilities for policing the province. Liquor law enforcement during the rumrunning days of the 1920s, and the creation of a highway patrol in 1930 played major parts in the evolution of the provincial police. The story of the OPP includes tales of murder, sabotage, corruption, and political influences. There were relief expeditions to the north in the wake of devastating forest fires, and confrontations with hoboes, harvesters, and loafers. Violent crimes, jail-breaks, war services, and industrial disputes all had to be contended with, and not a few members of the provincial police were killed in the performance of their duties over the years. 'Hepburn's Private Army' and 'Drew's Gestapo' gave rise to much criticism of the provincials, and embarrassing Royal Commissions did little to enhance the image or the morale of Ontario's finest. Despite the challenges to its continued existence, the OPP has emerged today as one of the finest, best equipped, and most brilliantly led police forces in the world." Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top edge..

THE WESTERN FRONT. ORDINARY SOLDIERS AND THE DEFINING BATTLES OF WORLD WAR I., Holmes, Richard.
85 Holmes, Richard. THE WESTERN FRONT. ORDINARY SOLDIERS AND THE DEFINING BATTLES OF WORLD WAR I.
TV Books, New York, 2000.
224 pp, large 8vo (9 3/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1575001470 B&w photographs, reproductions, maps/battle plans. "The Western Front in World War I was the scene of devastating trench warfare and astonishing human loss: nearly 750,000 soldiers perished in the battles fought in France and Belgium from 1914 to 1918. (This book) traces the path those soldiers took, and presents the political, military, and human dilemmas of a bitter and bloody war. (It) takes us through the major and most costly battles of the Western Front, many of which garnered dubious gains at best, and all of which were won only with great human sacrifice. The first battle of Ypres was not only a scene of heavy Allied losses, but was dubbed by the Germ ans the 'Massacre of the Innocents'; Verdun was a scene of astonishing casualties, where the professed goal of the German commander was to bleed the French forces to death; the fighting in the trenches of the Somme - a battle of attrition tha t l a s t e d six months - proved a turning point for the morale of the British Army and 'the muddy grave of the German field Army, and of the confidence in the infallibility of German leadership'; while the long wearing slog toward Passchendaele w as pa ve d wi th inept leadership and mutinies in the French forces before dreadful conditions simply ground the battle to a halt. Portraying the Western Front in stark and moving terms, Holmes draws not only from current scholarship, but also fr om l ett ers w rit ten by the soldiers and the stories of the survivors themselves." 86 Howard, Philip. Introduction by Lt.-General Sir Brian Horrocks. THE BLACK WATCH (ROYAL HIGHLAND REGIMENT) (THE 42nd REGIMENT OF FOOT). FAMOUS REGIMENTS SERIES.
Leo Cooper, London, 1969, reprint.
141 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0850520193 B&w photographs, reproductions. "The Royal Highlanders....the Gallant Forty-Two....The Germans christened them 'the ladies from hell'. Down the stormy centuries from Fontenoy to the Hook in Korea Britain's enemies have called them other less printable names. But when they were first raised as a police force to keep the peace in the turbulent and inaccessible Highlands, the locals nick-named them (in Gaelic, of course) the Black Watch. And the menacing name has stuck. Their old 'black' tartan has stuck too, and today is worn by imitators around the world from Tokyo to Trinidad. It was the first kilted regiment in the British army, the original ancestor of all the o ther famous regiments that were later raised in the Highlands. Until Waterloo Gaelic was the language of the Black Watch, and it is still spoken on occasions. They brought the bagpipes into the British army, because the Highlanders refused t o m a r c h without their pipes. In those early days they charged with claymore and dirk. Today they are fully motorized and mechanized for nuclear war. But the heart of the Black Watch is still Highland. The stern old regiment still keeps it s un i qu e tr ad itions. In the wild places of the world, in the most ferocious battles of the British army where victory was balanced on a bayonet point, the Black Watch has usually been there. And still today he is a man of lead whose imaginati on do es no t tin gl e when the hears the pipes play 'Hieland Laddie' (pipe score at rear of book), and sees the long lines of kilts swinging jauntily down the hill." Faint cigarette odor, minor edge wear, minor browning on spine. 87 Hubbard, R.H., edited with introduction by. THOMAS DAVIES IN EARLY CANADA.
Canada Oberon 1972 0887500684 / 9780887500688 Hard Cover Very Good - Very Good -
64 pp, oblong 8vo (8 1/4" H x 11 1/4" D). Profusely illustrated with reproductions of Davies' works in colour and b&w. "When most people think of the early Canadian landscape they think of William Henry Bartlett. Actually, Bartlett was by no means the only painter in early Canada, nor was he the best. One of the earliest, and one of the best of them all, was Thomas Davies. Davies first came to Canada in the seventeen-fifties. He came again in the sixties and then again in the eighties. He came as a commissioned officer in the Royal Artillery. His job was to record the topography of the country for military purposes. But he did much more than that. He preserved for us an exact and faithful likeness of the people, the towns and above all the landscape of early Canada. Little was known of his work until 1953, when a collection of his views was sold at Christie's. Twenty of these were bought by the National Gallery of Canada, others by the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto. It is now possible for the first time to appreciate the remarkable quality of his work. His water-colours are brimful of authentic details of early life in Canada. And they possess a calm and vivid beauty seen nowhere else in Canadian landscapes of the period." Most pages have a very soft small indentation and/or soft handling creases - more on page leaf 23/24, nine page leaves have a crease at top gutter area from manufacturing process, two tiny corner bumps on boards. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has light rubbing, very light browning on spine and at edges, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

"(T)he illustrations of Arthur Rackham continue to cast their spell on adults and children alike. They possess qualities which make a work live: faultless draughtsmanship allied to an imagination which may be delicate or grotesque, but is always original and illuminating. Derek Hudson introduces us to the man behind the work and comments on his techniques and achievements, often illustrating his point with reproductions of Rackham's own drawings or plates. Throughout the book he mentions all of Rackham's most important work which has appeared in print and here is also a very full check list. The book is therefore invaluable to those who collect Rackham's originals and first editions." 92 Innes, Michael. APPLEBY AND THE OSPREYS.
London Gollancz 1986 0575039167 / 9780575039162 First British Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
188 pp, 8vo (8" H). "Clusters (a great English country house) is being troubled by bats - bats in the belfry, bats around the moat, as Lord and Lady Osprey complain to their luncheon guests, who include Sir John Appleby, sometime Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police and, though now retired, still keenly interested in any puzzling crime. In the matter of the bats he is unhelpful, but soon he faces the challenge of a murder: the murder of Lord Osprey, stabbed with an oriental dagger, and in the library too. The conventions are properly observed. There's an omniscient butler, Bagot. The moat gleams darkly, guarding its secrets. Inspector Ringwood sets up his 'incident room' in the ballroom, which dazzles with mirrors, chandeliers and trompe l'oeil. The house guests include another title, a QC, and two or three experts on numismatics. And that last point takes us to the heart of the mystery: where, in this vast architectural pile, did Lord Osprey conceal his collection of antique coins? There are clues: the key in the library, the skiff on the moat, the intruder glimpsed through the French doors; even, possibly, the local publican's claim that an Osprey has raped his daughter. Appleby solves the problem with all his usual wit, ingenuity and aplomb. And the bats have the last word: very startling so." Previous owner's name in ink on free front endpaper, book is slightly cocked. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling, soft crease at top of rear flap.

BESIEGED: THE WORLD WAR II ORDEAL OF MALTA, 1940-1942., Jellison, Charles A.
93 Jellison, Charles A. BESIEGED: THE WORLD WAR II ORDEAL OF MALTA, 1940-1942.
University of New Hampshire / University Press of New England, (Hanover, NH), 1984, first edition.
288 pp, large 8vo (9 3/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Map endpapers, b&w photos, map. ISBN 0874513138 "During the early years of the Second World War, the tiny island of Malta withstood months of incessant heavy bombing and blockade by the Axis powers. Because of its strategic location and excellent harbor facilities, retention of Malta was of utmost importance for the British. Conversely, its surrender or neutralization as an offensive base was given the highest priority by the enemy. For more than two years this lonely outpost (the sole British base between Gibraltar and Alexandria) was subjected to the heaviest sustained bombing ever unleashed upon so small an area, while its people were increasingly deprived of food, medicine, and virtually all other necessities of life by the ever-tightening stranglehold of the Axis blockade. This fine narrative conveys in a lively, moving fashion the effects of that extraordinary period on the populace of Malta. This is not a military history, but rather extremely readable social history set against the backdrop of military events. It deals principally with the effect of the blockade upon island life, and is the first book to present the Maltese war experience from a Maltese point of view. It recounts the story of how a simple, deeply religious people who had never experienced modern warfare reacted to the brutal, grueling ordeal of a war that was none of their making. Growing out of the author's interest in and extended visits to Malta, the book's special features include extensive use of material from diaries and personal recollections extracted from dozens of interviews with actual participants in the drama. THE WORLD GUIDE TO GNOMES, FAIRIES, ELVES AND OTHER LITTLE PEOPLE., Keightley, Thomas.
98 Keightley, Thomas. THE WORLD GUIDE TO GNOMES, FAIRIES, ELVES AND OTHER LITTLE PEOPLE.
New York Avenel 1978 0517263130 / 9780517263136 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
560 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H). B&w illustrations. First Avenel reprinting of the 1878 G. Bell edition. "Kelpies, Korrigans, Pixies and Peries, Deeves, Brownies, and Bugaboos - these are just a few of the fantastic figures you will encounter in this unique collection of fairy mythology. Gnomes, faries, and elves of every imaginable size, shape, color, and demeanor spring to life in this marvelously illustrated guide to the fairy realm. Just one glance at the extensive table of contents reveals the scope and variety of fairy folklore explored here - from Persian and Arabian romance to the mythology of Scandinavia, England, France, Germany, and Switzerland. In addition, the author includes sections dealing with the more obscure fairy folkore and tradition of Greece, Spain, Italy, Africa, and the Middle East. Indeed, (he) has left no stone unturned in accomplishing the task he set for himself: 'to collect, arrange and classify and give under one point of view the various ideas and legends respecting fairies and similar beings of the popular creed.' Taken from a variety of sources of popular myth and legend, (it) forms a rich compendium of the superstitions surrounding those enchanting lesser deities, 'the little people'. Not only does (he) explore every type and species, but he also traces resemblances and similarities among the fairy traditions of different countries. For instance, did you know that the Nis (Scandianavia), the Kobold (Germany), and the Goblin (England) are all names for one species, which appears in Scotland under the name of Brownie, and that the Brownie is a person of small stature and wrinkled visage, is covered with short and curly brown hair, and wears a brown mantle and hood? In addition, Keightley discusses the fairy tradition as it appears in major works of English literature, from the Middle Age epic of 'Beowulf' and Chaucer's 'Canterbury Tales' to Spencer's 'The Faerie Queene' and Shakespeare's 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'." Light wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, two repaired small tears at top of spine. Dust jacket has several archivally taped tears - mainly at top of spine/hinges - one with creases, light browning at top inside of spine.
