82 Dyer, Gwynne. IGNORANT ARMIES: SLIDING INTO WAR IN IRAQ.
McClelland & Stewart, Toronto, 2003, 2nd printing.
189 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), soft cover. ISBN 0771029772 "Around the world thoughtful people are asking one vital question: How could an unspeakable terrorist act carried out by a small group of Islamist zealots, most of them Saudi Arabian, result in w ar being declared on Iraq, a country with a brutal but firmly secular government that had no known connection with 9/11? Is it a grotesque mistake, a sinister plot, or just the strategic equivalent of a highway pileup? Far too many politician s a n d journalists who should know better have swallowed the story that Saddam Hussein is a threat to the West, that his weapons of mass destruction are about to fall into the hands of suicidal terrorist fanatics, and that we must invade Iraq bef or e t he B east of Baghdad eats us, hair and all. WHEN THE WHALERS WERE UP NORTH: INUIT MEMORIES FROM THE EASTERN ARCTIC., Eber, Dorothy Harley.
83 Eber, Dorothy Harley. WHEN THE WHALERS WERE UP NORTH: INUIT MEMORIES FROM THE EASTERN ARCTIC.
Kingston McGill-Queen's University Press 1989 0773507027 / 9780773507029 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+
187 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). Map endpapers, b&w and colour photographs, reproductions. "During the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, whaling vessels from Britain and America plied their trade in great numbers in the waters off the Eastern Arctic of North America. The heyday of whaling has, until now, been documented solely from the perspective of the whalers, never from the viewpoint of the Inuit, whose lives were touched - and sometimes destroyed - by their presence. Here, finally, is a rich view from the perspective of the Inuit, who welcomed the whalers and served on their crews. The author tells a story drawn from oral memories, a story which will soon disappear with the last Inuit generation to have seen the whalers. Illuminated by a remarkable collection of drawings, photographs, and illustrations, many in full colour, tales are told of when the whalers first appeared on the north-east coast of Baffin Island, how they set upland stations in the whale-rich waters of Cumberland Sound, and how they eventually pushed on into Hudson Bay. During this time the Inuit not only fed and clothed the whalers, they hunted with them, adding to the whalers' wealth. Our understanding of change in Inuit life is often linked to the fur traders, who arrived in the North fifty years after the arrival of the whalers. In truth it is the Inuit's close contact with the foreign world of the whalers which maked the beginning of a change in previously undisturbed Inuit culture and tradition." Minor edge wear. INANNA: FROM THE MYTHS OF ANCIENT SUMER., Echlin, Kim.
84 Echlin, Kim. INANNA: FROM THE MYTHS OF ANCIENT SUMER.
Toronto Groundwood 2003 0888994966 / 9780888994967 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Near Fine Linda Wolfsgruber.
72 pp, 9 3/4" H. Decorated endpapers, colour illustrations. "Long before the Bible and the Koran, before the myths of the Greeks and Romans were set down, the people of Sumer recorded the stories of their gods and kings on cuneiform tablets. The world's oldest epic poem is the 'Epic of Gilgamesh', the tale of a hero who was part god, part man. But just in the past century a thrilling discovery was made - the four-thousand-year-old stories of his powerful sister, the goddess Inanna. Inanna is a goddess who embodies the quest for growth. Her stories tell how she develops from childish inexperiece and youthful exuberance into maturity and gains the powers to create, to destroy and to name. She is a goddess of spunk and wisdom who outwits and defies the powerful, falls in love with the shepherd Dumuzi and, like Gilgamesh, dares to seek immortality. The people of Sumer associated Inanna with the planet Venus - radiant, changeable and mysterious. They worshipped her with awe and adoration. With the guidance of Sumerian scholars, Kim Echlin has produced a moving, sensitive and knowledgeable translation of the Inanna myths. They describe an ancient goddess who was at once a great warrior, lover, nurturer, seeker of knowledge and giver of power - a figure worthy of admiration by people of any age." Very tiny bump on bottom edge of front board. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling.

" 'Clive - that man not born for the desk - that heaven-born general': so William Pitt the Elder described the subject of this penetrati ng biography, the most challengingly enigmatic figure in the colourful history of British India. It was Robert Clive who, through a series of astonishing military victories, brought Bengal into the Empire and thus assured the steady exten s i o n o f B r itish rule in India. Yet, as Michael Edwardes shows, he was not so much a military genius as a brilliant opportunist who understood that the game of Indian politics was best played by Indian rules....Here, against the vivid pagean t of e ig h te en t h- ce ntury India, (Edwardes) freshly illuminates the myth, the achievement and the ultimate nemesis of this extraordinary man." As a result, there is a great variety of such militaria for the enthusiast to collect - a variety which can often confuse the unwary and the ill-informed. Conway Maritime Press, London, 1999, first edition.
286 pp, small 8vo (7 7/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0851777694 B&w illustrations, colour plates. "Six centuries before the birth of Christ, people began to imagine an immense land at the bottom of the world, a land of marvels, of enormo us wealth and mystery. 'Discovery' is the story of the quest which compelled men in small ships to traverse unknown seas, to endure extraordinary hardships, to slowly unveil the sixth continent. The story begins among Greek philosophers on the s h o res of the Mediterranean. It ends two millenia later in the vast Southern Ocean. Lucidly and concisely, Miriam Estensen tells an absorbing tale of mapmakers and lonely caravels, Spanish hidalgos and Dutch merchants, remote coasts and castawa ys , bu ccaneers and dreamers. At the heart of 'Discovery' is the power of a myth and the adventures and sacrifices of those who pursued it, for this is the story of how an imagined place was made real, how the speculations of visionaries became Te rra I nco gnita and then Australia." "Weaving his narrative around the detailed eyewitness accounts of aircrews, groundcrews and those who built the Stirling, (t he author) reveals the troubled life story of the Shorts' big bomber. Through the eyes of a factory worker at Queen's Island, Belfast, we witness the birth of one of the RAF's first four-engined 'heavies'. We climb the crew ladder, follow th e s k i p per up the long dark fuselage to the cockpit and fly with him and his crew on one of the first Stirling raids over Germany. Lie on your belly in the bomb aimer's position as the skipper dodges flak and fighters at low level: 'We crossed th e e ne my c oast at Wilhelmshaven and were soon flying at low level between two of the Friesian Islands - the guns on each island appeared to be firing horizontally or down at us.' Sit in on a top secret briefing for an SD Stirling crew at Tem psf or d, and fl y w ith them to a DZ 'somewhere in Occupied Europe' to deliver their 'Joe'. Freeze in the biting East Anglian wind with the groundcrews on dispersals as they try to change an exhaust manifold: 'The Bristol Hercules engines were su perb - the re w as v irtu ally nothing to leak from them. 256 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w plates. "From more than 2,000 years of military history, (the author) has selected some one hundred examples of battles centred on river crossings. They range in size fom small-scale actions such as the battle for Powick Bridge in the early months of the English Civil War to massive, army-scale operations including the final crossing of the Rhine at Remagen during the Second World War. One of the biggest battles during the Napoleonic Wars - indeed, the biggest battle to that date with more than 300,000 men in combat - was fought across the Danube in 1809, culminating in the battle of Wagram. Later, as Napoleon's fortunes began to ebb, there took place the desperate and tragic crossing of the Berezina in 1812 when Napoleon's depleted army, retreating from Moscow, fought to cross the freezing river to escape the pursuing and encirling Russians and the hell of a Russian winter. The American Civil War also provides many examples of battles for river crossings, such as First Bull Run, the opening engagement of the war, the fight for Burnside's Bridge at Antietam and the Battle of the Big Black River during the riverine campaign for Vicksburg. Other, often lesser-known, actions are also to be found in this book, including tales of desperate courage from the Indian Mutiny and other British colonial wars. The range of contributions, including expert analyses and eyewitness accounts often enables the reader to see both sides of the story - those of the defender and the attacker - and to compare battles fought in similar circumstances, but with very different weapons, across the centuries." A few faint scuffs on the front board. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling, one small edge tear archivally taped.
