"Paris welcomed Gerald Murphy, whose billboard-sized cubist icon dominated the 1924 Salon des Independants and launched a brief but brilliant career; Stuart Davis, who explored the continuity between cubist painting, lithography, and jazz at the atelier Desjobert,; Man Ray, who abandoned oils to begin 'painting with light' in his movies and rayographs; and Alexander Calder, whose wire circuses and portraits inspired critics to acknowledge art's inherent playfulness. (This book) documents the work and influence of these four notables of the avant-garde who startle and delight us even today...Richly illustrated and beautifully designed, this volume is a feast for the eyes and the intellect. Crowood, Marlborough, 2006, first edition.
160 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1861268629 Profusely illustrated in colour and b&w with photographs, reproductions, drawings, patterns. "In the first half of the 1940s, the wartime scarcity of wools and dyes produced inno vative, figure-hugging lacy designs and creative stitch techniques of bobbles, cables and ribs. In the post-war period, there was an even more acute shortage of materials, which meant that imaginative Fair Isle designs and embroidery techni q u e s b e c ame the only solution. As the 1950s approached, however, a greater availability of materials led to the voluptuous batwing look and looser garments. This lavish book celebrates the patterns and designs of 1940s knitwear. Drawings a nd p ho to g ra ph s from the original pattern magazines accompany modern colour phtographs of the garments knitted up for today's wear. In addition, it provides a history of wartime Britain and America, often using the actual words of the knitter s a nd des ign er s u sed b y the fashion magazines. Patterns appear chronologically, reflecting what was happening at the time, and progress from the very simple (snood, balaclava or WAAF doll) to the more intricate blackberry stitch and lacy des igns as the kni tte r be come s m ore fluent with the needles. Many of the designs are unusual and there are sequins, beads knitted into the fabric, and knitted buttons. American, British and continental needle sizes are included, as is America n ter mino logy; and meas ureme nts a re g iven in both imperial and metric. The material comes from a collection of over 2,000 historic knitting patterns." Very minor wear on bottom of boards. Dust jacket has tiny tear and wrinkle at top of spi ne. N ear F ine/Ve ry Go od+

Arthur Baker, London, (1975).
174 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w maps, photos, reproductions. "...drawing upon contemporary diaries and reports of campaigns ranging from the Napoleonic Wars, the Crimea, South Africa and India to the First and Second World Wars, (the author) has recreated some of the many acts of heroism performed by the British soldier. Futile though some of them may have eventually proved, such as the infamous Charge of the Light Brigade and the tragic stand at Maiwand, there is no doubting the outstanding courage of their perpetrators. The words of men who were present at the scenes of conflict described here, successful or otherwise, speak more clearly and movingly than any second hand account." London New English Library 1981 0450048802 / 9780450048807 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Very Good-
382 pp, 8 3/4" H. "The Black Monk of Pontefract began disturbing the Pritchard family in 1966. Bangings in the night, objects flying across rooms, and a mysterious black-robed figure, whose appearances became more and more frequent. The police, the local MP and the vicar were all witness to the extraordinary happenings which continued to plague the household, and all attempts to exorcise the presence were met with mockery. In this definitive work (Colin Wilson) examines the recorded evidence of this and other famous poltergeists. Cases of hauntings have been recorded since ancient Greece and Rome. Poltergeist means 'banging ghost', because of their habit of making loud noises and throwing objects around. This book is not about Black Magic. But it is about the strange forces that surround us, and of which most of us are totally unaware. These forces may make us feel uncomfortable and may even terrify us, but there is not point in closing our eyes to them." Chapter headings: Professor Lombroso Investigates; Possession is Nine Points in the Law; Cases Ancient and Modern; The Black Monk of Pontefract; Fairies, Elementals and Dead Monks; The Black Magic Connection; Ghost Hunters and Ghost Seers; Speculations and Conclusions. 392 pp, large 8vo, hard cover in dust jacket. B&w tables, maps, graphs, illustrations. "Social, military, and political history intersect in this meticulously researched study of French war veterans from the end of the Old Regime to the 1820s. Tracing the composition of this group, the changing public policy that determined its fate, and the institutions that served it (notably the Hotel des Invalides), Woloch shows how the vererans' situation was a veritable barometer of the revolutionary experience. His principle aim is precisely to reconsider that experience from a fresh and full-scale perspective..." Macmillan of Canada, Toronto, 1967, first edition.
186 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Photographs, maps. "On July 26, 1936, His Majesty King Edward VIII unveiled a memorial on Vimy Ridge, near Arras, to the 60,000 Canadian dead of the First World War. It was so large and impressiv e that some Frenchmen took exception to it; the French had suffered 150,000 casualities in the summer of 1915 alone, trying to take the ridge, but they had failed. How was it that four divisions of Canadians had succeeded, and why did Canada c h o o s e this particular battlefield on which to build a colossal $2,000,000 monument to her wartime dead? In answering these two questions, Colonel Wood examines this fascinating battle on two levels. He describes the infinite care and thoro u gh p re pa ra ti on which, combined with the courage of those who took part, ensured success. He also explains why it was that the Ridge came to mean so much to the citizen-soldiers who wrested it from German hands. The two themes are linked to ge the r b y h is des cri ption of the battle itself, reconstructed with the help of hundreds of eye-witness accounts and supported by contemporary photographs of the men who planned the operation and carried it out, the conditions under which they fou ght, and the ir oppo nent s as they saw them after the battle was over."
