James Lorimer, Toronto, 1977.
95 pp, 8 3/8" H, soft cover. B&w photographs. ISBN 0888621493 "Mennonites are among the earliest settlers of nineteenth-century Ontario. A law-abiding, deeply religious and pacifist people, they travelled from Pennsylvania by wagon and foot to s ettle in the Niagara area around Kitchener-Waterloo and in York County north of Toronto. To Canada the Mennonites brought a long rural tradition of architecture, furniture-making and folk art. These ideas inspired the houses and farms the y b u i l t , and the production of a great variety of furniture, in a style rooted in Germany and Pennsyvania and modified with the Ontario experience. Authors Musson and Nykor concentrate on the furniture of the York County area, and draw paral le l s an d co nt ra s ts with the predominant styles in other Ontario communities. Also discussed are the homes, farms and churches of the Mennonite community. These too are distinctive in style while unmistakeably part of the larger nineteenth-c ent ur y Ont ar io tra dit io n." Exterior - light edge wear and browning, ghost sticker mark and small indentation on front cover, very light rubbing/soiling and small corner crease on rear co ve r, s pin e c olor is fad ed - lettering still very legible. A-Z OF STAFFORDSHIRE DOGS: A POTTED HISTORY, Pope, Clive Mason
88 Pope, Clive Mason A-Z OF STAFFORDSHIRE DOGS: A POTTED HISTORY
Woodbridge, Suffolk Antique Collectors' Club 1999 1851492585 / 9781851492589 Reprint Hard Cover Fine Very Good
168 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H). Colour photographs. "In the 18th century, artists and potters were not slow to reflect in models the interest of the time in identifying and selectively breeding individual types of dog, and continental and home-based factories started to produce realistic examples of both sporting and pampered dogs. Following Landseer's painting of 1836 of Queen Victoria's favourite dog, the King Charles Spaniel Dash, the potters of Staffordshire were not slow to seize the opportunity to turn Dash into a national icon. Pairs of spaniels were portrayed in clay in enormous quantities, followed soon after by many other breeds. The modellers are usually anonymous, but the simple hand-painted decoration, often done by children, gives each piece an individuality and vitality, and as (this) charming book shows, these dogs have an enduring quality that makes them as endearing today as they were when first made." Very light rubbing, very light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and top edge of rear panel, two tiny dints on front hinge.

The earliest book describe d i s B u ssato's 'Giardino di Agricoltura' of 1592, the latest 'The Herefordshire Pomona', an encyclopaedia of apples and pears from the 1870s. Sections on fruit-growing in these two countries are followed by others on fruit elsewhere in Europe (including the books of Knoop, Gallesio, and Bi vor t) a nd f ru it i n Am erica (with Downing, Hovey, and several sets of nurserymen's plates) before chapters on citrus fruit (beginning with Ferrari's 'Hesperides' of 1646), apples and pears, peaches and soft fruit, grapes, melons, and tropic al f ruit .
