WALTER CRANE., Spencer, Isobel.
81 Spencer, Isobel. WALTER CRANE.
New York Macmillan 1975 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Walter Crane.
208 pp, 11 1/8" H. B&w and colour illustrations. "More than any other artist of the time Walter Crane appears at the center of the great surge of interest in the decorative arts in the late nineteenth century. He was the driving force behind the Arts and Crafts movement, a children's book illustrator, designer of textiles, tiles, stained glass and ceramics, and a painter who enjoyed a reputation on the Continent as the most popular of the Pre-Raphaelites. Long before his name came to be associated with Kate Greenaway and Randolph Caldecott as the outstanding artists for the nursery, his brightly colored series of Toy Books ensured him a wide reputation. His fame led to commissions for nursery wallpaper, and from there to fabrics, ceramics, mosaic, stained glass, and gesso relief. As President of the Art Workers' Guild Exhibition Society he was a more strenuous advocate of the Arts and Crafts movement than his friend, William Morris, and traveled abroad with his work, specifically helping the formation of an American Arts and Crafts movement. Crane's early paintings embody the romantic medievalism of Rossetti and Burne-Jones, but he soon used poetry and painting as a means to express his growing interest in new philosophical ideas. Ultimately he was converted to socialism - a cause he embraced wholeheartedly, becoming a member of the Social Democratic Federation, the Fabians, and Morris's Socialist League. He gladly made his art servant to his beliefs, producing political cartoons and trade union banners. This is the first major study of Crane's life and work to be published since his death in 1915. Isobel Spencer, a past lecturer in the history of art at Glasgow College of Art, includes in her scholarly study of the man and his work the full range of Crane's many artistic activities." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, small bump at top corners of boards, tiny dent on bottom edge of rear board. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, light browning at top inside edge.

BAROQUE SCULPTURE., Stech, V.V. Translated by Roberta Finlayson Samsour.
83 Stech, V.V. Translated by Roberta Finlayson Samsour. BAROQUE SCULPTURE.
Spring Books, London, nd.
195 pp, large square 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Profusely illustrated with b&w and colour plates. "One of the most fascinating periods in European art history, the Baroque marks a triumphant break with the rules and restrictive for mulas of the Renaissance. Its genius was Bernini, whose sustained imaginative powers and incredible technical skill brought the Baroque style to its fullest maturity. In lesser hands, where the mastery of technique was not so assured and the cr e a t ive imagination not so well disciplined, the pitfalls are all too obvious. No style perhaps has ever captured the imagination quite so quickly; throughout Europe commissions poured in, wealthy landowners and rich merchants vying with each oth er t o express their ambitions and achievements in building, painting and sculpture, in itself an interesting sidelight on social history. The Czech lands were no exception, and the variety and high level of achievement in the contemporary Baroque st yle a re amply illustrated by the plates in this present volume. The accompanying text supplies a full documentation of Czech sculpture of the period and discusses in detail a number of important artists whose work deserves to be more widely k nown ." EDWARD BURRA: TWENTIETH-CENTURY EYE, Stevenson, Jane
85 Stevenson, Jane EDWARD BURRA: TWENTIETH-CENTURY EYE
London Jonathan Cape 2007 0224078755 / 9780224078757 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
496 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w plates. "The first full-scale biography of one of Britain's most important twentieth-century painters. Edward Burra never followed fashion: in the thirties, when modern art was dominated by abstraction and landscape, he painted people; in the sixites, when landscape was completely out of fashion, he started to find it interesting. His life was an unusual one: profoundly disabled, he lived with his parents, and was in constant pain. Only when he was painting could he forget his body. At the same time he was a man with a rich and full life. He was a letter-writer of genius, writing every afternoon to a wide circle of friends. His letters are camp, witty, full of the energy and delight in life which he could not express physically. Inventive, entertaining, and extraordinarily original, his writing expresses a man who combined profound personal loyalty with distaste for any kind of emotional grandstanding." Very small bump to top corner of both boards, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, small shallow bump on rear board. Dust jacket has wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor edge wear, small shallow bump on rear panel.

"Paris welcomed Gerald Murphy, whose billboard-sized cubist icon dominated the 1924 Salon des Independants and launched a brief but brilliant career; Stuart Davis, who explored the continuity between cubist painting, lithography, and jazz at the atelier Desjobert,; Man Ray, who abandoned oils to begin 'painting with light' in his movies and rayographs; and Alexander Calder, whose wire circuses and portraits inspired critics to acknowledge art's inherent playfulness. (This book) documents the work and influence of these four notables of the avant-garde who startle and delight us even today...Richly illustrated and beautifully designed, this volume is a feast for the eyes and the intellect. VERSATILE YANKEE: THE ART OF JONATHAN FISHER, 1768-1847., Winchester, Alice.
99 Winchester, Alice. VERSATILE YANKEE: THE ART OF JONATHAN FISHER, 1768-1847.
Princeton Pyne Press 1973 878610510 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good- Jonathan Fisher.
29 pp + 40 plates (printed on one side of leaf, captions facing), + (9) pp List of Works, 12 1/4" H. Colour plates plus additional b&w illustrations. The Reverend Jonathan Fisher of Blue Hill, Maine "was a universal man - inventor, farmer, architect and builder, surveyor, linguist, naturalist. Above all he was an artist, translating his vision of the goodness and orderliness of God's creation into paintings and woodcuts. Made for his own enjoyment and that of his family and a few friends, Fisher's paintings have largely been preserved in the small community where he lived and worked for forty years. This book, while it reveals Fisher's many-sided personality, is basically devoted to illustrating his work. The majority of his paintings are published here for the first time - the water colors from his notebooks, begun when he was an undergraduate at Harvard, and lovingly bound with his own hands; a selection of his most important paintings in oil; and many of the woodcuts with which he illustrated his books. Here, carefully recorded, with straight-forward and painstaking realism, are Fisher's college and his village, the fruits of his garden, and the animals and birds of field and forest. No subject is too small to engage his interest, none too dry to be transformed by his imagination. The common house fly and a wondrous carrot are fully detailed; garlands of fruits and flowers run riot through his mathematical exercises." Previous owner's bookplate on front pastedown, minor twist to spine. Dust jacket has very light edge wear/wrinkling, three edge tears archivally taped, very light rubbing, several light scratches on rear panel.

116 pp, small 4to (10 7/16" H). Profusely illustrated with b&w and colour reproductions of the author/artist's work. "John Worsley was one of the very few active service artists of the Second World War, and in this book he recalls his experiences both in active sea warfare and later as a prisoner of war. At the outbreak of war the twenty-year-old John Worsley joined up as a Midshipman and during off duty moments sketched his fellow sailors and incidental scenes of life at sea. Having survived the sinking of his first ship, HMS Laurentic, destroyer service on Atlantic convoys and, during 1942, troop convoys from the Red Sea to Australia in the cruiser HMS Devonshire, in 1943 he was made an Official Naval War Artist on the Commander-in-Chief's staff, Malta. After covering the first Italian landing in the Straits of Messina at Reggio and later the landing at Salerno, he moved on to cover some of the nefarious activities opening up the Naval front in the Adriatic and there was captured by the Germans. As a prisoner he continued depicting the PoW life around him and helped to produce forged identity papers and, most ingenious of all, he created 'Albert', the successful dummy Naval Officer escape device used both for the initial escape of one prisoner, and also as his stand-in on three roll calls a day for four days after. The celebrated film 'Albert RN' is based on this episode. (This book) captures the sense of immediacy and intimacy that comes from an on-the-spot artist depicting his own world." Slight 2" line indentation and faint rub line on front board. Dust jacket has minor wear at top/bottom of spine, several light scratches on front panel - no colour loss, very small sticker pull on front panel, light rubbing.
