81 Edwards, Cliff. RAILWAY RECORDS: A GUIDE TO SOURCES.
Richmond, Surrey Public Record Office 2001 1903365104 / 9781903365106 Soft Cover Very Good+
222 pp, large 8vo (9 5/8" H). B&w illustrations. "This guide shows enthusiasts and researchers how to find records relating to railway companies, individuals who served on the railways and the trains themselves. From the first days of steam to the golden age of train travel at the start of the twentieth century, the railways have played a central role in British social history. When the remaining private railway companies were nationalized in 1948, their administrative records and those of the hundreds of companies they had absorbed were passed to the Public Record Office. The records include inform-ation on the estimated half million people employed by over two hundred separate rail companies at the start of the last century, and provide an important source of material for genealogists, economic historians and railway enthusiasts alike." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - minor wear at bottom of spine, very small scuff at bottom of rear hinge.

256 pp, large 8vo (8 15/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0563369558 B&w photographs. "The British Foreign Office is famous, venerable and misunderstood. While its public face is one of grandeur and formality, its inner workings are shroud ed in mystery. Now, for the first time, the Foreign Office has opened its doors to the BBC; in this book, and the television series which it accompanies, we can find out what life is really like for those who represent the UK abroad or serve m i n i s t ers at home. Among the many issues (the author) considers are what diplomats do and how they do it, why it is a difficult job for a woman, how the Foreign Office compares with the other foreign services, and why Britain seems out on a l im b in E ur op e. She looks at diplomats doing work which ranges from negotiating complicated deals in Brussels to visiting drug traffickers in Bangkok and dealing with death in Delhi. Throughout the book (she) captures the heady excitement that ca n go wit h b ein g a diplomat, but shows too how gruelling can be the demands the life makes on diplomats and their families." The second, and major portion of the book, deals with the meaning and significance of, or story behind, the titles of most of the Scottish Country Dances in the R.S.C.D.S. collection. 85 Erickson, Carolly. ROYAL PANOPLY: BRIEF LIVES OF THE ENGLISH MONARCHS.
New York St. Martin's Press, New York, 2006. 2006 0312316437 / 9780312316433 Hard Cover Fine Near Fine
351 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). Colour and b&w plates. "(This book) replaces the stereotypic images with true multifaceted portraits, bringing each of England's rulers to fully fleshed life. Here is the puny Charles I, nervous, tense, and socially awkward; the frail, slight Richard II, melancholic and sad; the homosexual James I with his handsome favorites; the stuttering William II and the stammering George VI. Here also is the choleric, violent William I (William the Conqueror), bred among the chaos of constant warfare in his native Normandy, ceaselessly embattled once he became King of England. The unkingly Henry III, mild and charitable, despised by his barons for his weakness. And the well-meaning, deeply affectionate Queen Anne, whose many children all died before they could reach adulthood and who was so heavy and gout-ridden that she had to be carried to her coronation. Each ruler's life has a unique story, and 'Royal Panoply' tells that story with award-winning historian Carolly Erickson's characteristic blend of scholarly authenticity, engaging prose, and psychological insight. The focus is not merely on the tale of each reign, but on each king's or queen's entire life, for some rulers did not come to the throne until middle age, and had already led full lives before their accession. Here they are in full panoply: feudal warriors, Renaissance icons, Regency dandies, and modern constitutional monarchs, fascinating characters all." Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling.

87 Evans, Hilary and Evans, Mary. THE LIFE AND ART OF GEORGE CRUIKSHANK 1792-1878.
New York S.G. Phillips 1978 0875992277 / 9780875992273 Hard Cover Very Good Good George Cruikshank
192 pp, 11 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w reproductions. "When George Cruikshank died, (over) a hundred years ago, he was admired as an artist, respected as a reformer, loved as a man. But he had lived so long and created so much that few could discern any unity underlying the diverse creations of his seventy-year working life - creations ranging from a thumbnail caricature of Napoleon III ('it never reigns but it bores!') to the four-metres-wide 'Worship of Bacchus' which now hangs, dusty and neglected, in the storerooms of the Tate Gallery. For some he was the artist who showed us Oliver Twist asking for mroe; for some the whimsical delineator of elves and fairies; for others the fanatical reformer who drew 'The Bottle' to convert us all from the Demon Drink. Everything he created was a spontaneous response to the world he saw. It might be something trivial, as when he went on a day-trip to Boulogne - the only time he left English soil! - and memorialized the event in a masterly sketch of seasick travellers (which perhaps explains why the adventure was never repeated). Or it might be on a deeper level, as when he symbolises in 'The Drunkard's Children' all the horrors of modern industrial society. It is his ability to see the world both as it is and as it might be which is the greatness of Cruikshank, both as a man and as an artist, and this book sets out to reveal the continual development of his art as a reflection of his continual development as a man. It therefore takes the form of a running commentary on pictures which are themselves a running commentary on the artist's outward and inward life. From more than two hundred pictures, one of the widest selections of his work ever brought together, Cruickshank emerges, not just as one of the world's greatest illustrators, but as a visionary artist whose work, at first glance so light and casual, reveals a profound sympathy and understanding of human life." Minor bump at top bottom of spine, one tiny corner bump, some light rubbing on rear board. Dust jacket has light edge wear, moderate edge wrinkling - mainly at top edge, light fading to spine and flap-fold color, 2" puckered triangular closed tear and small puncture with associated rub line on rear panel, 1" tear at bottom of front flap fold, minor rubbing and soiling on rear panel.

88 Fenton, R.S. MERSEY ROVERS: THE COASTAL TRAMP SHIP OWNERS OF LIVERPOOL AND THE MERSEY.
Gravesend, Kent World Ship Society 1997 0905617843 / 9780905617848 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
344 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H). Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, b&w profiles on endpapers, colour reproductions of flags & funnels. "In 'Mersey Rovers' will be found many of the owners of bulk-carrying steam and motor coasters which were primarily engaged in, for want of a better word, the tramp trades. All began their shipowning careers at Liverpool or another Mersey port; several migrating from Wales to do this, others succumbing to the lure of Liverpool after a successful start at a minor port on the Mersey. Several important Liverpool owners covered in past or planned World Ship Society publications have been omitted, including the Coe, Kennaugh, Monks and Monroe families. Also left out are owners of craft engaged largely in regular liner services and in river and estuarial trades. As the inclusions and exclusions are likely to become confusing, all the local coastal shipowners of significance have been listed in the Miscellany section. The emphasis in this book is on steam and motor coasters and, for reasons explained in 'Cambrian Coasters', sailing ships will not be found in the fleet lists, although some are referred to in the histories. (I) have attempted to examine common strands in the histories of Mersey coasters and their owners and the Introductory Survey aims to place the ports, trades, owners and ships of the river in an historical and geographical context. Writing this, I have tried to answer the question, 'Why did the Mersey become such a centre for coastal shipowning?'." From the Foreword. Light waviness to edges of text block, book is lightly cocked, slight wrinkle at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, some light wrinkling at top edge.

BODYSNATCHERS: A HISTORY OF THE RESURRECTIONISTS 1742-1832., Fido, Martin.
89 Fido, Martin. BODYSNATCHERS: A HISTORY OF THE RESURRECTIONISTS 1742-1832.
Weidenfeld and Nicolson, London, 1988.
184 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0297793934 B&w illustrations. "From 1740 to 1832, freshly buried corpses were dug up and surreptitiously hawked to surgeons and anatomists in London and Edinburgh to dissect for research and teaching purposes. The resurrection trade brought together Fellows of the Royal Society and slum-dwelling criminals in an unholy alliance. By the beginning of the nineteenth century, the illicit trade had become one of London's most effic i e n t l y o rganized departments of crime, with gang-leader Ben Crouch securing a virtual monopoly of delivery to half the teaching hospitals. In Scotland, several surgeons of great eminence loved the adventure of association with desperadoes and w il li ng ly a c co mpanied them on their nocturnal excavations. Not surprisingly, there was great public consternation about the activities of the bodysnatchers, but it was only when Burke and Hare introduced murder as a means of acquiring 'sub jec ts' th at the au th ori ties acted to eradicate the ghoulish practice. Martin Fido's book is an enthralling study of a strange byway of criminal low life. It provides the first full and accurate accounts of murderers Helen Torrence and Jean Wald ie, Bish op and Head an d El iza Ross. With sketches of the great surgeons who encouraged and sought to control the trade, 'Bodysnatchers' will interest many in the medical profession and social historians as well as devotees of the true crim e gen re." Pev iou s ow ner's nam e/dat e on free front endpaper and embossed stamp on half-title page. Dust jacket has one tiny edge tear archivally taped. Very Good/Very Good

BELOVED EMMA: THE LIFE OF EMMA LADY HAMILTON., Fraser, Flora.
93 Fraser, Flora. BELOVED EMMA: THE LIFE OF EMMA LADY HAMILTON.
Weidenfeld and Nicolson, London, 1986, first edition.
410 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0297788957 Pictorial endpapers, b&w plates. "(C)harts Emma's life from her birth as the daughter of a Cheshire blacksmith to her death fifty years later in Calais in circumstances of poverty and neglect. (Fraser) deals in particular depth with the Italian period of Emma's life, when - as the wife of Sir William Hamilton, the affable, erudite British Minister at Naples - she became an intimate friend of the Queen of Naples and s at to all the portrait painters of Europe. The licentious climate of Naples provided an easy setting for Emma's famous romance with Lord Nelson: London Society's reaction to the affair is chronicled in fascinating detail. Flora Fraser sheds n e w l i ght on the shifting relationship between Emma, Nelson and Sir William at Paradise Merton, their home in Surrey, and explores Emma's later life - her strange, will-o'-the-wisp existence after the deaths of her husband and her lover. The a ut ho r h as h ad access to private manuscripts and illustrative material in England and Italy, and her extensive use of contemporary sources such as letters and diaries bring the period vividly to life." Born and brought up in London's East End, the future War Correspondent and Radio Critic started his career on a local paper and worked his way up. Since those early days he has visited more than thirty countries and met many famous men and women. His assignments have given him an 'inside slant' on some of the biggest stories of recent times, and in several instances he is now able to disclose information which was hitherto suppressed by the censor. (He) witnessed the much criticised campaign in Southern France, the sensational capture of Leros, the Airborne drop across the Rhine and the liberation of Rome, Athens and Amster-dam. Since the war he has toured America from coast to coast and has much to say of recent radio and television developments. There are personal anecdotes of President Truman, the Pope, Bernard Shaw, H.G. Wells, George Lansbury, of famous soldiers like Montgomery and Alexander, and many others." 97 Gantz, Jeffrey, translated with introduction by. THE MABINOGION.
New York Dorset 1985 0880290390 / 9780880290395 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
310 pp, 8 1/4" H. "These eleven medieval Welsh tales were first written down in the 13th century, but were the product of countless generations of oral tradition. This fresh and exciting new translation presents the classic stories in a highly readable, but still authentic style. All the color and energy of the Celtic world emerges through the myths, folklore, history and pseudo-history of Celtic Britain. 'Pwyll', 'Branwen', 'Manawydan' and 'Math' are mythological fragments bound by central, unifying themes. Other stories show British courage and intelligence in Roman and pre-Roman days, while King Arthur makes his first appearance in Celtic prose in a tale of the hero's quest for the giant's fair daughter. Like Cretien de Troyes and Thomas Malory, 'Owein', 'Peredur' and 'Gereint' use the legends of Arthur's court as backdrop and ancient themes as material for heroic and romantic adventure. Just as the ancient mystical world is evoked in these stories so is Wales, whose lakes, valleys and rivers are very much rooted in history. The 'Mabinogion' combines myth and history, reality and illusion, and magic and the ordinary to recreate the essence of ancient Celtic life. Includes: Bibliography, Index, Map of Wales, and a Note on the Pronunciation of Welsh Names." Minor wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wear, very light rubbing, very light browning to inside edges.

Rupert Hart-Davis, London, 1971, first edition.
319 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 024664043X B&w plates, maps. "There has never been a company like the East India Company: it ruled over nearly one-fifth of the world's population, possessed its own army and navy, its own c ivil service, and even its own church. It became the greatest military power in Asia and had a revenue larger than that of Great Britain itself. This is the story of the London merchants who, in their persistent and dogged quest for trade w i t h t h e East, struggled with misunderstanding and suspicion, rivalry with the French and the collapse of the authority of the Indian emperors. The Company brought the brilliant military conquests of men like Robert Dlive and Warren Hastings, an d th e a cq ui sitions of Sir Stamford Raffles and men who spent their entire careers in its service. There were the conquests of the Wellesleys, the intrigues and battles for power with the British government, the prejudice and envy inspired b y t he re tu rn hom e o f wealthy retired employees, and the compromise which ended in the appointment of government selected Governors-General. The story of the East India Company is one of adventure, triumph and disaster, pride and loyalty, that spa ns more th an two hund red years of British history: it is also the story of the foundation of the British Empire in India."
