WALTER CRANE., Spencer, Isobel.
91 Spencer, Isobel. WALTER CRANE.
New York Macmillan 1975 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Walter Crane.
208 pp, 11 1/8" H. B&w and colour illustrations. "More than any other artist of the time Walter Crane appears at the center of the great surge of interest in the decorative arts in the late nineteenth century. He was the driving force behind the Arts and Crafts movement, a children's book illustrator, designer of textiles, tiles, stained glass and ceramics, and a painter who enjoyed a reputation on the Continent as the most popular of the Pre-Raphaelites. Long before his name came to be associated with Kate Greenaway and Randolph Caldecott as the outstanding artists for the nursery, his brightly colored series of Toy Books ensured him a wide reputation. His fame led to commissions for nursery wallpaper, and from there to fabrics, ceramics, mosaic, stained glass, and gesso relief. As President of the Art Workers' Guild Exhibition Society he was a more strenuous advocate of the Arts and Crafts movement than his friend, William Morris, and traveled abroad with his work, specifically helping the formation of an American Arts and Crafts movement. Crane's early paintings embody the romantic medievalism of Rossetti and Burne-Jones, but he soon used poetry and painting as a means to express his growing interest in new philosophical ideas. Ultimately he was converted to socialism - a cause he embraced wholeheartedly, becoming a member of the Social Democratic Federation, the Fabians, and Morris's Socialist League. He gladly made his art servant to his beliefs, producing political cartoons and trade union banners. This is the first major study of Crane's life and work to be published since his death in 1915. Isobel Spencer, a past lecturer in the history of art at Glasgow College of Art, includes in her scholarly study of the man and his work the full range of Crane's many artistic activities." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, small bump at top corners of boards, tiny dent on bottom edge of rear board. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, light browning at top inside edge.

364 pp, 8 11/16" H. B&w illustrations. "(A)n account of the development of children's books in the United States, Britain, Canada, and Australia, (this book) has long been acclaimed as an invaluable guide and resource for parents, teachers, and students alike. The third revised edition faithfully maintains all the strengths of the earlier editions - concise, informative coverage of a vast subject - and includes a totally rewritten Part Four that provides a fresh, detailed investigation of aspects of the modern world most relevant to books for children and young people during the years 1945-1985. The result is an extremely readable and stimulating survey of imaginative writing (including poetry and picure books) accompanied by a superb bibliography of works on children's literature and dozens of illustrations from many of the books mentioned in the text. 1085 pp, 9 1/4" H. "This revised and enlarged 'Checklist' provides as complete a record as possible of the separately published works that constitute the literature of English-speaking Canada up to 1960. Its purpose is to stimulate interest and research in our literary culture, to reveal individual figures and areas of investigation rich in published material, and to facilitate the finding of the books concerned. Background materials are included because the cultural soil must be known if a nation's belles-lettres are to be adequately studied or fully appreciated. Part I of the 'Checklist' records all known titles in poetry, fiction, and drama that were produced by English-speaking Canadians. Part II is a selective reading list of books by Canadians which will be of value to anyone studying the literature or culture of Canada. Here are included books of biography, literary criticism, scholarship, local history, and religion. Each title published before 1951 is coded to indicate where copies of the book can be found. Some 16,000 titles by 7,000 Canadian authors are included in this comprehensive bibliography." Small faint area of red dye at top/bottom of text block fore-edge, wrinkling at top/bottom of spine.
