61 Holt, W. Stull. Edited by Maclyn P. Burg and Thomas J. Pressly. THE GREAT WAR AT HOME AND ABROAD. THE WORLD WAR I DIARIES AND LETTERS OF W. STULL HOLT.
Manhattan, Kansas Sunflower University Press 1999 0897452224 / 9780897452229 Soft Cover Near Fine
328 pp, 8vo, (9" H). B&w photographs, maps. "W. Stull Holt was 20 years old when he sailed for France in late March 1917 to join the American Ambulance Field Service. His patriotism, idealism, and desire for adventure had motivated him to volunteer just weeks before the U.S. declared war against Germany in April 1917. Holt ardently supported the war effort, and when his six-month contract with the AAFS was completed, he enlisted in the American Air Service where he won his pilot's wings, then applied for observer training. Holt was assigned as an observer-bombardier-gunner with the famed 20th Aero Squadron of the American 1st Daylight Bombardment Group, which dropped more bombs than any other American squadron at the front in World War I. He served near Verdun during the French summer offensive of 1917 where he was gassed; he later was awarded the French 'Croix de Guerre'." Very minor edge wear on covers.

291 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w illustrations. "(E)xamines the often stormy relationships (of the generals and politicians of the Great War), portraying the decision-making process on both sides. Many of the individuals involved remain household names today over eighty years on: Douglas Haig, Ferdinand Foch, David Lloyd George, Woodrow Wilson and the German Kaiser, Wilhelm II. The results of their endeavours led to the now legendary carnage in Gallipoli, on the Somme, in the mud of Flanders and the frozen heights of the Alps. How did these great men conduct their relationships and decision-making? To answer this, the chapters range widely to look at the Home Front, the Western Front and America at war. They also deal with the role of royalty and sideshows such as Italy, where Britian and France came to the aid of faltering allies. In all of this, defeat or victory would be decided by the most forceful and dynamic leaders willing to listen to and accept the wisest counsel. (This book) brings together the works of distinguished authorities on this ever-fascinating period and adds significantly to our understanding of the often complex relationships at play." Minor browning to edges of textblock, two tiny edge tears with crease at top of page 139/140 - archivally taped. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling.

THE ART OF CHOOSING., Iyengar, Sheena.
71 Iyengar, Sheena. THE ART OF CHOOSING.
New York Twelve 2010 0446504106 / 9780446504102 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
329 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). "Life is full of choices. How do we make them? Choice is a powerful tool to define ourselves and mold our lives - but what do we know about the wants, motivations, biases, and influences that aid or hinder our endeavors? Columbia University professor Sheena Iyengar, a leading expert on choice, sets herself the Herculean task of helping us become better choosers. She asks fascinating questions: Is the desire for choice innate or created by culture? Why do we sometimes choose against our best interests? How much control do we really have over what we choose? Ultimately, she offers unexpected and profound answers, drawn from her award-winning discipline-spanning research. Here you'll learn about the complex relationship between choice and freedom, and why one doesn't always go with the other. You'll see that too much choice can overwhelm us, leading to unpleasant experiences, from 'TiVo guilt' over unwatched TV programs to confusion over health insurance plans. Perhaps most important, you'll discover how our choices - both mundane and momentous - are shaped by many different forces, visible and invisible. This remarkable book illuminates the joys and challenges of choosing, showing us how we build our lives, one choice at a time." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has soft wrinkling at top edge, minor rubbing.

THE MILITARY CORRESPONDENCE OF FIELD MARSHAL SIR HENRY WILSON 1918-1922. PUBLICATIONS OF THE ARMY RECORDS SOCIETY VOL. I., Jeffery, Keith, editor. Field Marshal Sir Henry Wilson.
72 Jeffery, Keith, editor. Field Marshal Sir Henry Wilson. THE MILITARY CORRESPONDENCE OF FIELD MARSHAL SIR HENRY WILSON 1918-1922. PUBLICATIONS OF THE ARMY RECORDS SOCIETY VOL. I.
Bodley Head / Army Records Society, London, 1985, first edition.
438 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 037030683X Two b&w maps. "Among the papers of Field Marshal Sir Henry Wilson in the Imperial War Museum are some 300 letters dating from his time as professional head of the British Army. W ilson was Chief of the Imperial General Staff, February 1918 to February 1922, and the correspondence selected for this Army Records Society volume reflects all the principal military concerns of the period. During the last nine months of th e F i r s t World War the great German spring offensive, the Allied successes in the late summer and autumn, and final victory in November dominate the letters. Post-war problems of demobilisation and army re-building were followed by the difficu lt i es o f me et ing wide-range military commitments throughout the world. At home domestic revolution necessitated that the army prepare for operations in aid of the civil power. Abroad military action had to be co-ordinated with the French in ord er to en fo rce th e peace treaty with Germany and support Allied policy in Eastern Europe. Further demands were made on the army by calls to repress nationalist unrest in Ireland, Egypt, Indian and Mesopotamia (Iraq), together with communal vio len ce i n Pa les tine . A ll these topics are covered in the correspondence, which in particular demonstrates Wilson's growing disillusionment with the government's Irish policy. Wilson was himself an Irishman with strong Unionist sympathies whic h ma teria lly c ontr ibute d to his assassination by Irish nationalists just a few months after retiring from the War Office." 75 Katz, Michael B. THE PEOPLE OF HAMILTON, CANADA WEST: FAMILY AND CLASS IN A MID-NINETEENTH-CENTURY CITY.
Cambridge Harvard University Press 1975 0674661257 / 9780674661257 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Very Good-
381 pp, 9 1/2" H. Tables, graphs. "(R)econstructs the social structure, life cycle, and domestic relations within a mid-nineteenth century Canadian city. (Katz's) analysis draws on the records of the entire population found on the manuscript census, assessment rolls, city directories, newspapers, and other sources. (He) has explored the relationships between inequality, ethnicity, sex, mobility, transiency, household structure, and coming-of-age during a period of profound social change. At one level, the book describes in great detail the nature of family and society in a commercial city. Simul-taneously, it uses the patterns uncovered in Hamilton, which the author compares to those other historians have found elsewhere, to speculate about broad questions in social history and social theory. Finally, the book is an exploratory exercise in the application of quantitative techniques to social history; as such its interest lies in its method as well as its substance. The author contents that two themes - structural rigidity and individual transiencey - characterized life in the commercial city. Despite the massive flow of people into and out of the city, its basic structures remained virtually unaltered, thought the identity of its occupants changed dramatically. In part, the history of the family reflected these two themes; but the family had an independent existence as well. For, despite some structural parallells, the family served somewhat different purposes than its modern counterpart, especially the sheltering of young people during a period Katz calls 'semi-autonomy', a phase of the life cycle that virtually has disappeared." Bump and tiny tear at bottom of spine - light wrinkling at top of spine. Dust jacket has heavy creasing and small tear archivally taped at bottom of spine, very light wrinkling at top edge, light rubbing and soiling on rear panel.
