NATTER BACHEM Ba 349 AND OTHER GERMAN ROCKET FIGHTER PROJECTS., Dressel, Joachim. Translated from the German by Curtis Bond.
61 Dressel, Joachim. Translated from the German by Curtis Bond. NATTER BACHEM Ba 349 AND OTHER GERMAN ROCKET FIGHTER PROJECTS.
Atglen, PA Schiffer 1994 0887406823 / 9780887406829 Soft Cover Very Good +
48 pp, oblong (8 1/4" H x 11" D), stapled in wraps. B&w and color photographs, b&w drawings. "(The Luftwaffe looked) into the possibility of producing inexpensive aircraft which, however, would have enough power to quickly engage the enemy formations. Consequently, the machines which were created were predominantly made of wood, a raw material not important to the war effort. Assembly and construction were kept as simple as possible. In this way these machines could be completed without affecting the already overloaded industry. The rocket motor was a natural choice for a power plant due to its high performance. The take-off and landing procedures were kept simple to avoid long training periods for pilots. Take-off was accomplished via a tow or the vertical take-off. Landing was made on skids or the fighter abandoned and the pilot and important components (e.g. motor, weapons systems) recovered by parachute. What follows is the history of t he development of these technically highly-interesting aircraft." Inside - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. London Weidenfeld & Nicolson 2006 0297846892 / 9780297846895 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
383 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w photographs, maps, drawings. ""The Battle of the Somme has an enduring legacy, the image of 'lions led by donkeys' established by Alan Clark; of brave British soldiers sent to their deaths by incompetent generals. but, as Duffy reveals in this groundbreaking study, this was never the German view; indeed, the Germans had great respect for the British forces. The evidence for this is both copious and unfamiliar, discovered in archived official papers, histories, memoirs and letters, and most revealingly of all in the results of the interrogation of British prisoners of war. The picture that emerges is a far cry from 'Blackadder'. The questioning by German intelligence officers was more systematic and detailed than that employed by their British counterparts. It was also more open-ended, encouraging those captured to speak freely and at length whilst still in shock from combat and capture. Their recollections are of unique interest because of their immediacy, separated from the event by a matter of hours or a few days at most, rather than being contaminated by the passing of time and outside opinion. This is not another of the number of comprehensive histories of the Battle of the Somme. Instead it looks at aspects of the battle from the German point of view, showing in particular the Germans' perception of the British performance and mentality in the course of that long struggle. From the German point of view, the battle was a disaster. And the fact that every British soldier taken prisoner still believed Britian would win the war gave German intelligence teams a fair indication that their empire would go down to defeat." Minor cigarette odor, very light browning to edges of textblock, faint thumb print at fore-edge of free front endpaper. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top of spine.

189 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), soft cover. ISBN 0771029772 "Around the world thoughtful people are asking one vital question: How could an unspeakable terrorist act carried out by a small group of Islamist zealots, most of them Saudi Arabian, result in w ar being declared on Iraq, a country with a brutal but firmly secular government that had no known connection with 9/11? Is it a grotesque mistake, a sinister plot, or just the strategic equivalent of a highway pileup? Far too many politician s a n d journalists who should know better have swallowed the story that Saddam Hussein is a threat to the West, that his weapons of mass destruction are about to fall into the hands of suicidal terrorist fanatics, and that we must invade Iraq bef or e t he B east of Baghdad eats us, hair and all. Toronto Macmillan Canada 1961 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
195 pp, 8 3/4" H. "A brilliant intelligence is brought to bear on the vital issues of Canadian defence and foreign policy, on Canada's relations with the U.S. and the British Commonwealth and the Communist bloc. Canadians do not always look at these problems in the same way as their North American neighbours. This book considers the Canadian 'style' in approaching such questions. (Discusses) difficult and frightening issues such as the location of the Great Deterrent, the acquisition of nuclear weaons, the fate of the Avro Arrow, civil defence. (Eayrs) examines the 'Nostrum of Neutralism' and while he concedes its appeal, concludes that the arguments in its favour are not valid at present. Commonwealth concerns, the monarchy, America's ill-fated intervention in Cuba, the role of the United Nations, the non-recognition of Communist China - all these questions and others of the kind are fearlessly and realistically discussed." 144 pp, 4to (12" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1903040027 Profusely illustrated in colour and b&w with photographs, reproductions, uniform studies, maps/battle plans. "(T)ells the story of one of the great military elites of the past - the Rifleman. It shows him at his finest moment in the green jacket of the 95th Rifles in the wars against Napoleon. It reveals the way he fought, the weapons and equipment he used, and the tactics he perfected. First-hand accounts are matched by bri lliant colour reconstructions of the Rifleman, bringing the reality of the battle to the reader. The invention of the rifle gave a new twist to warfare. Hunters became soldiers who fought in green and hid behind cover - the days of brightly - u n i f o r med ranks of men exchanging volleys of fire was over. Developed in the forests of North America, the Rifleman revolutionised the art of war. In the campaigns against Napoleon, units of British Riflemen took on French light infantry a rm ed w it h mu sk ets. Trained to act independently and with a respect for his own skills, the Rifleman was an exceptionally intelligent warrior, the forefather of today's combat soldier. His greatest moments in the Peninsular War and at the bat tle of Wa ter lo o a re vividly described in first-hand accounts, but some of the myths of the Rifleman are also punctured." 215 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H). B&w illustrations. "Once aptly described as 'chess with a thousand pieces', wargaming can be made as complicated and elaborate as desired, or so simple that even young children can take part. This book - the ideal introduction to the hobby - explains what wargaming is all about, how armies can be assembled and how, on any reasonably-sized table, realistic engagements can be fought by tactical manoeuvring. The basic rules by which forces are moved and casualties assessed are explained, there is practical advice on making one's own soldiers and on conversions, and guidance on how to prepare and lay out realistic battlefield scenes. Another great attraction of the wargaming hobby is the research it invites into famous campaigns of the past, and not the least valuable part of this book is its brief survey of warfare from earliest times to the present day. Here the military tactics of each period are considered, together with the role of the different types of soldiers and their weapons, and there is an extensive bibliography to facilitate research into specific periods of military history." 256 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w plates. "From more than 2,000 years of military history, (the author) has selected some one hundred examples of battles centred on river crossings. They range in size fom small-scale actions such as the battle for Powick Bridge in the early months of the English Civil War to massive, army-scale operations including the final crossing of the Rhine at Remagen during the Second World War. One of the biggest battles during the Napoleonic Wars - indeed, the biggest battle to that date with more than 300,000 men in combat - was fought across the Danube in 1809, culminating in the battle of Wagram. Later, as Napoleon's fortunes began to ebb, there took place the desperate and tragic crossing of the Berezina in 1812 when Napoleon's depleted army, retreating from Moscow, fought to cross the freezing river to escape the pursuing and encirling Russians and the hell of a Russian winter. The American Civil War also provides many examples of battles for river crossings, such as First Bull Run, the opening engagement of the war, the fight for Burnside's Bridge at Antietam and the Battle of the Big Black River during the riverine campaign for Vicksburg. Other, often lesser-known, actions are also to be found in this book, including tales of desperate courage from the Indian Mutiny and other British colonial wars. The range of contributions, including expert analyses and eyewitness accounts often enables the reader to see both sides of the story - those of the defender and the attacker - and to compare battles fought in similar circumstances, but with very different weapons, across the centuries." A few faint scuffs on the front board. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling, one small edge tear archivally taped.
