WINGS OF NIGHT: THE SECRET MISSIONS OF GROUP CAPTAIN CHARLES PICKARD, DSO AND TWO BARS, DFC., Hamilton, Alexander.
61 Hamilton, Alexander. WINGS OF NIGHT: THE SECRET MISSIONS OF GROUP CAPTAIN CHARLES PICKARD, DSO AND TWO BARS, DFC.
Crecy 1993 0947554343 / 9780947554347 Reprint Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good
206 pp, large 8vo (9 3/8" H). B&w photographs. "Charles Pickard joined the Royal Air Force before the outbreak of World War II, and at the beginning of hostilities was posted to No.99 Bomber Squadron and was later to command the Czech 311 Squadron. He took part in the Bruneval raid, and came to the forefront of public attention when he starred as 'F for Freddie' in 'Target for Tonight', a film made to illustrate the operational role of the bomber. His secret missions began when he was posted to RAF Tempsford, the jumping off ground for the SOE operations from where, as a Lysander pilot, his sorties took him deep into enemy territory at night to drop secret agents and supplies. Time after time he demonstrated his extraordinary ability for night flying but, ironically, was killed while taking a prominent part in the famous daylight raid on the prison at Amiens." Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling, light rubbing, irregular light line indentation on front panel, two tiny pin holes on front flap-fold.

THE UNRELIABLE LIFE OF HARRY THE VALET: THE GREAT VICTORIAN JEWEL THIEF., Hamilton, Duncan.
63 Hamilton, Duncan. THE UNRELIABLE LIFE OF HARRY THE VALET: THE GREAT VICTORIAN JEWEL THIEF.
London Century 2011 1846058139 / 9781846058134 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
311 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w illustrations. "October 17, 1898, en route to Paris's Gare du Nord station, the Dowager Duchess of Sutherland's jewels were stolen from her train carriage. More than forty pieces, worth nearly 2 million Pounds today, disappeared that night, and the perpetrator along with them. It would become one of the most widely reported heists of the late Victorian era, but what no one knew was that the man who committed this most daring and well-planned theft had already committed nine almost identical crimes. A man who wore bespoke suits and handmade shoes; who used a dozen pseudonyms to dust over his tracks; who belonged to three smart London clubs and lived in the luxury of West End hotels; whose staple diet was champagne and whisky; who was pursued by London's top detectives for five and a half years and - by their own admission - proved smarter than them. A man who fell so much in love with a woman that he would steal and lie for her, only to be betrayed by her." Book is slightly cocked. Dust jacket has some areas of very light edge wrinkling.

64 Hamilton-williams, David. THE FALL OF NAPOLEON: THE FINAL BETRAYAL.
London Brockhampton 1999 1860199852 / 9781860199851 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
352 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w plates, maps/battle plans. "This important study of the cause and effects of Napoleon's removal from power tracks the significant events in his illustrious career through to his downfall and, while doing so, charts the clandestine diplomatic intrigues linking Britain, Austria, Russia and Prussia in the quest for the Emperor's demise. Using substantial new research, (the author) questions many of the established views in Napoleonic literature to date. By disclosing hitherto secret terrorist organizations, uncovering the attempts to assassinate Napoleon, highlighting unbridled political duplicity, and demonstrating a host of previously misinterpreted signals and actions, he instigates a fresh assessment of the fall of Napoleon, new reasons to consider how much it was self-inflicted and how much it became inevitable given the combined forces - 'friend' and well as 'foe' - ranged against him. However great his military campaigns, how often he was victorious on the battle-field, Napoleon was destined to be deposed by political connivance and personal betrayal." Very small bump at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling.

UNKNOWN SOLDIERS: THE STORY OF THE MISSING OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR., Hanson, Neil.
65 Hanson, Neil. UNKNOWN SOLDIERS: THE STORY OF THE MISSING OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR.
Alfred A. Knopf, New York, 2005, first American edition.
474 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0307263703 B&w photographs, map. "The First World War was a conflict of unprecedented ferocity that unleashed such demons as mechanized warfare and mass death on the twentieth century. After the last shot was fired and the troops marched home, approximately three million soldiers remained unaccounted for. Some bodies were found, but they bore no trace of identification; many more men had been blown to smithereens or had s i m p l y vanished into battlefields where as many as a hundred shells had fallen on every square yard. An unassuming English chaplain first proposed a symbolic burial of one of those unknown soldiers in memory of all the missing dead. The idea w as p ic ke d u p by almost every country that had an army in the war, and each laid a body to rest amid an outpouring of national grief - in London's Westminster Abbey, Paris's Arc de Triomphe, Rome's Victor Emmanuelle Monument, and, for the United St ate s, Arl in gt on National Cemetery in Virginia. In (this book, the author) offers an unflinching yet compassionate account of the reality of battle on the front lines. He focuses on three soldiers - an American, an Englishman, and a German - an d na rra tes the ir war experiences through their diaries and letters. (He) describes how each man endured the nearly unbearable conditions in the trenches and in the air and relates what is known about their deaths; all three died on the batt lefie lds o f th e So mme, wi thin gunshot sound of one another. He delves into their familial ties, the ideals they expressed in their letters, and he explains how the death of one, the American pilot George Seibold, was instrumental in the creat ion of the G old S tar M other s, a n organization caring for bereaved mothers, wives, and families that is still active today. Hanson animates and brings to life the combatants who perished without a trace, and shows how the Western world arrived at the now ti me-hon ored w ay of mourn ing and paying tribute to all those who die in war." Tiny piece missing from edge of rear pastedown, two tiny tears at top of spine, light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Perth and Kinross District Libraries, Perth, 1991.
192 pp, 8vo, HC in dust jacket. B&w illus. "This story of the success and failure of a family engaged in the dyeing industry is the first to take an objective look at Pullars of Perth...by the mid 19th-century 'Pullars of Perth' had become a by-wo rd for fast and efficient service, especially in dry-cleaning, not only in London, but in Paris and Berlin! This was no economic miracle. The Pullars' success was due entirely to hard work, successful planning and clever advertising. A l w a y s r e a d y to introduce the latest types of machinery they had a reputation as good employers. Their success was reflected in their life-style and influence in Perth. Then, suddenly, things started to go sour. Challenged by a powerfu l Tr ad e Un io n a nd a n in creasingly militant female work-force, the Pullars, despite their long experience and compassion, could not cope. Strikes and riots led to a violent ending between the family and Perth." Dust jacket has minor wrinkl in g a t t op /bo tto m of fla p f ol ds. NF/VG+

The Wizard of 4th Street - 247 pp, 3rd printing, ISBN 0445208422 - Wyrdrune (a less-than-competent student wizard) and Kira (a beautiful cat burglar) have "managed to pull off the heist of the 23rd century. The place was a posh Fifth Avenue gallery. The room was full of sorcerers bidding their heads off - and Wyrdrune and Kira made off with three invaluable jewels. Now, they've got hired killers, Arab magnates, and every punk magician in New York after them. The real trouble is that the stones are enchanted. Which means they keep coming back to Wyrdrune, and he can't get rid of them - or Kira - for love or money. It's going to take serious thaumaturgic research to unravel a mysterious spell that goes back to the dawn of time." 2. The Wizard of Whitechapel - 215 pp, 2nd printing, ISBN 0445203048 - "A telephathic dream shared by (Wyrdrune and Kira); a dream that called them to England to save the last survivor of Camelot. An enchantment from the dawn of time united (them) with a shady French witch, a 300-pound fairy, and a feisty thirteen-year-old English punk street urchin named Billy Slade - who is a lot more than what he seems. But can this unlikely team prevail over the awesome, ancient power that is loose in London, stalking the mist-enshrouded streets at night and savaging its victims? Can anything defeat the necromancy of the Dark Ones?" 3. The Wizard of Sunset Strip - 202 pp, 2nd printing, ISBN 0445207027 - "A devil haunts the City of Angels - a fiend who is carving his own Hollywood legend on the bodies of young women. Why was the only suspect torn to pieces in his jail cell? From the glitz and glamour of Tinsel-town to movie sets where ominous shadows leave footprints in the ground, Wyrdrune and his band must find a way to stop the murders - before a fantasyland of eternal horror is created in a temple of innocence." 4. The Wizard of the Rue Morgue - 201 pp, 1st printing, ISBN 0445207043 - "Responding to an ally's plea, the bearers of the runestones must outwit the gendarmes to free an innocent man. Meanwhile, Parisian street children are disappearing as a chain of bizarre slaughters brings a new horror to the Rue Morgue. Their plan: unleash a bestial army on Paris and drown the city in a sea of blood." 5. The Samura Wizard - 214 pp, 1st printing, ISBN 0446361321 - "Tokyo, Japan, a thriving metropolis powered by a blend of technology and magic. But some inhuman entity is murdering women and Inspector Akiro Katayama, sorcerer agent in charge of crimes involving magic, has just one clue to work with - a dragon's scale. Enlisting the aid of Japan's greatest wizard and a streetwise homicide detective, he tries desperately to solve the case - but he has no idea of the awewome power he is dealing with. (Wyrdrune, Kira, Billy Slade & Modred are the only ones who) know the identity of the beautiful necromancer behind the killings - but can they stop her before she unleashes the most deadly spell of all?" 6. The Wizard of Santa Fe - 349 pp, 1st printing, ISBN 0446361941 - "The Pueblo Indians called it the Dancing Ground of the Sun, but now an evil force from the dawn of time threatens to turn this peacful city into a place of eternal darkness. With the coming of the Second Thaumaturgic Age magic has returned to the city, and it is here that adept Paul Ramirez hopes to pass on the old knowledge he has gained from the legendary Merlin Ambrosius. Soon, however, he'll find himself tracking down a vicious killer - in league with (Kira, Wyrdrune, Billy Slade) and a tough-talking one-eyed cat named Gomez. He'll need all the help he can get - on a Santa Fe trail of necromancy fast turning into a blood-soaked Festival of the Damned!" 7. The Wizard of Love-craft's Cafe - 210 pp, 1st printing, ISBN 0446365173 - "Undercover cop John Angelo had enough to worry about, posing as a contract killer to infiltrate the mob. Then a necromantic ambush results in his death, and Angleo comes back as something more than what he was - a blend of his own personality with that of a two-thousand-year-old sorcerer - Modred. His wizard half is needed to help Wyrdrune and Kira defeat the ancient Dark Ones now united to destroy the mystic Runestones, whose magic spell has pursued evil from the dawn of time. THE PARTY DRESS., Hergesheimer, Joseph.
68 Hergesheimer, Joseph. THE PARTY DRESS.
Longmans, Green, Toronto, 1930.
343 pp, small 8vo (7 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "After forty years, Nina Henry looked in her mirror and found there a stranger in place of herself. Her first Paris dress had transformed her from a respectable young matron into an almost i ndecently beautiful woman. If that's what a dress does to you, she told herself, it is all wrong. It's immoral....Her husband thought so, too. He said it had changed her - made her look like a French cocotte. And when that night she met C h a l k e E wing, vacationing from his Cuban sugar ranch, Nina knew that she actually had changed - become a stranger to herself. She realized, with complete surprise, that she had never really been in love before. But despite the change, Nina co ul d no t fa c e the situation. Possessed by the necessities of the present, she was bound by the romantic conventions of the past. Demanding all, she would sacrifice nothing. How far she is successful, and where she fails, is a dramatic record o f t he ne ed fo r co mpromise, which more than any other quality, has formed the thoughts and acts of most women." Small label from bookstore on front pastedown, browning to fore-edge and bottom of text block, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spi ne, one sma ll slig ht co rner bump, light fading to color on spine and at top/bottom edges. 352 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). "(O)ffers a very different kind of tour to the armchair traveler. Wander through the haunted castles and cottages of Europe with Hans Holzer, the world's most famous psychic investigator, and explore a full range of psychic phenomena from the spirits of the British Isles to the haunts of Imperial Vienna. In England, Anne Boleyn's legendary ghost walks headless within the Tower of London; a procession of transparent monks appears in the Cathedral of Winchester, where no monks have trod since the sixteenth century; and Bloody Queen Mary still visits the four-poster bed where she slept in the dark days of 1553. At Kilkea Castle in Kildare, it is said that the Wizard Earl and his companions ride at night and will return someday from the beyond to 'put things right in Ireland'. Room No. 2 in the Hotel de l'Europe in Avignon holds a shocking surprise for the unwary guest; and in Paris, No. 3 avenue Montaigne offers a special concert of ghostly piano music from a spectral grand. Ghost occur wherever great tragedy has left an unfortunate person stranded between the next world and this one, someone who has not yet been freed from their emotional turmoil. The true accounts presented in this book are based on Dr. Holzer's personal investigations." One page leaf with two very small scollops at fore-edge. "The viceregal residences of the Canadian provinces mirror the idiosyncrasies of their inhabitants, and the tastes and talents of the architects, builders, gardeners, furniture makers and decorators who created them. In 'Ample Mansions' you will see the finest - and sometimes the worst - of Canadian style. There's no shortage of pomp in our viceregal history, but Dr. Hubbard's scholarly and sprightly text goes behind the scenes too, where there's plenty of room for rot and mildew, plugged drains and erratic staff. There are ample mansions crumbling from neglect, ample mansions consumed in conflagrations, ample mansions falling victim to political spats - and ample mansions rising in new splendour." Fine book. Doubleday Canada 2008 038566172X / 9780385661720 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
335 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). "The few hundred Loyalists who gathered at Roubalet's Tavern in New York one night in 1782 shared a nightmare of the past and a dream for the future. In the aftermath of the American Revolution, they found themselves abandoned by the king to whom they had promised their loyalty, and unwelcome in the land that had so recently been theirs. On the rocky shores of Roseway Bay on the south coast of Nova Scotia, beside one of the best harbours in the world, they would found a new and improved New York City. It would be cosmopolitan, but more refined, more royal, more loyal and certainly more exclusive than the place they were leaving forever. At first, all seemed to go according to plan. Shelburne, as it was called, quickly became the fourth-largest city in North America. At the time, Nova Scotia Governor John Parr grandly decribed it as 'the most considerable, most flourishing and most expeditious (city) ever -- built in so short a time --'. Within the decade, however, the Loyalists' dream city was well on its way to becoming a ghost town. What went wrong? This extraordinary and yet little-told episode from our nation's past is brought to exciting life. Combining painstaking research and a novelstic flair for narrative, (Kimber) charts Shelburne's 'rapid rise and faster fall' through the intertwined experiences of an eclectic collection of its early settlers, from aristocrats to freed slaves, colonial officers to local entrepreneurs." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, a few tiny edge bumps to boards. Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling, minor rubbing.

THE DUCHESS OF WINDSOR: THE UNCOMMON LIFE OF WALLIS SIMPSON., King, Greg.
80 King, Greg. THE DUCHESS OF WINDSOR: THE UNCOMMON LIFE OF WALLIS SIMPSON.
Citadel / Kensington, New York, 2003.
556 pp, 9" H, soft cover. ISBN 0806524642 "It was the love story of the century - the king and the commoner. In December 1936, King Edward VIII abdicated the throne to marry ' the woman I love,' Wallis Warfield Simpson, a twice-divorced American who quickly became one of the twentieth century's most famous personalities, a figure of intrigue and mystery, both admired and reviled. Wrongly blamed for the abdication crisis, Wallis suffered hostility from the Royal Family and much of the world . Yet interest in her story has remained constant, resulting in a small library of biographies that convey a thinly veiled animosity toward their subject. The truth, however, is infinitely more fascinating than the shallow, pathetic portrait t h a t has often been painted. Using previously untapped sources, (the author) presents a complete and, for the first time, sympathetic portrait of the Duchess that sifts the decades of rumor and accusation to reveal the woman behind the legend. F ro m he r birth in Pennsylvania during the Gilded Age to her death in Paris in 1986, King takes the reader through a world of privilege, palaces, high society, and love with the accompaniment of hatreds, feuds, conspiracies, and lies. The cast of cha ra cte rs is vast: politicians and presidents, dictators and socialites. Twenty-four pages of (b&w) photographs reveal the life of the Duchess in all its incomparable glamour and romance." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership mar ks. Ex ter ior - three light creases down a concave spine. Very Good
