ISBN 0771573014 "When VE Day finally came, it erupted with glorious celebrations, tears, and cries of victory. It was a sweet day and a bitter one for millions of people whose lives had been forever changed. This day, and long days of war that led to it, are brought to life in (this book). More than 300 Canadians tell their own stories of the Second World War - stories of cour a g e , sacrifice, tragedy, and glory. It was one of the most trying times in Canadian history, and these ordinary men and women rose to the extraordinary challenge laid before them. Their stories are celebrated here, woven into a compelling narra ti ve o f the Canadian wartime experience, bringing the past vividly to life. Here are tales from noted war correspondents Scott Young and Matthew Halton; stories of home-front rationing, shortages and endless bureaucracy; horrific memories of Buc hen wal d - and Canadian internment camps; hair-raising bomber command stories; revelations of the repatriation controversy; and hilarious accounts of wartime entertainers, including Wayne and Shuster and the crew of 'Meet The Navy'." Toronto Macmillan Canada 1992 0771591764 / 9780771591761 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good
358 pp, 9 1/4" H. Map endpapers, "When war broke out in September 1939, the Allied air forces had few combat aircraft and even fewer military pilots ready to fight. It was clear that air superiority would determine the outcome of the war, so in December 1939, Britain, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada created the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan. Most of the air crew training took place in Canada. The success of the plan depended on its instructors. At the beginning of the war bush pilots, barnstormers, commercial pilots, crop-dusters, amateur aviators, and First World War veterans were called up to begin the huge task of training. Most of their students went to the front, but some were kept in Canada to instruct the next generation of recruits. At its peak, the plan administered 107 schools and 184 other units at 231 sites across Canada, operated 11,000 aircraft, and employed 104,000 men and women. The BCATP trained 200,000 air crew in less than five years. FDR and Winston Churchill called their work 'the decisive factor' in the war." Book is Near Fine. Dust jacket has minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, two corner creases on front flap.

184 pp, large 8vo (9 13/16" H), laminated, flexible covers. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions, maps. "British forces in India were in almost constant battle with Afghan hill tribes, the most implacable guerilla fighter in history. 'Frontier Warfare' was one of the most important tasks for the British army in India. It was a strange war fought to its own rules. Prisoners were seldom taken by either side. Over the years, the British introduced armoured vehicles and aircraft, but the key features of warfare on the Afghan frontier remained the same from Victorian times to World War II and the British withdrawal from the sub-continent in 1947. From the army immortalized by Kipling to the end of the British Empire in India, Michael Barthorp reveals how the British dealt with Afghanistan." For Ordinary Signalman Ludd - inevitably dubbed 'Lobby' - it is his first trip and li k e l y t o be a tough one. The convoy must run the gauntlet of U-boats, aircraft - there is even the threat that enemy battleships will put to sea; finally there is the other enemy - the bitterest weather, the cruelest seas in the world...Seen f ro m th e p er sp ectives of both wardroom and lower deck, (although a work of fiction, this book) gives an entirely authentic account of the experience of sailors on Arctic convoys during World War II. From the final shore leave in Liverpool to th e a rr iva l at an in hospitable Russian port, through tragedy and much suffering, the men in the cramped messdecks maintain their unflagging humour to the end. 70 Bata, Thomas J. With Sonja Sinclair. BATA: SHOEMAKER TO THE WORLD.
Toronto Stoddart 1990 0773724168 / 9780773724167 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
341 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs. "In 1932, when young Tom Bata watched his father's coffin being lowered into his grave, he silently promised to abide by the wishes expressed in his father's 'moral testament': that the Bata Shoe Company was to be treated not as a source of private wealth, but as a public trust, a means of improving the liviing standards within the community and providing customers with good value for their money. At the time, Tom had no idea of the challenges he would face in fulfilling that promise. Not only was he ill-equipped, at age eighteen, to step into the shoes of an acknowledged business genius, creator of the largest shoe manufacturing and retailing organization in the world. Worse than that, fate was about to deal him a series of painful blows. The subjugation of his homeland, Czechoslovakia, by the Nazis was followed by an acrimonious family rift, the expropriation by Communist regimes of all his holdings in Eastern and Central Europe and, in other parts of the world, economic and political upheavals that threatened the survival of the newly resuscitated Bata organization. Yet Bata actually thrived on the sudden change and adversity. From his new home base in Canada he built, this side of the Iron Curtain, a global empire that employs 70,000 people and plays an important part in the economies of many developing countries. (This) is the story of the man, his family and their business." Remainder mark (dot) on bottom of text block, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and at top of rear flap, very light rubbing.

128 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0340248238 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "Colditz Castle is the Eiger North Wall of World War Two POW camps. It was the ultimate fortress for the bravest and the best, f or the most ingenious, most determined and daredevil spirits who had already effected an exit from lesser establishments of the Third Reich. From Colditz, it was boasted, there could be no escape. The stories of those Allied officers who t o o k u p t he challenge are now well known. But here for the first time a book gathers together a collection of the authentic official German photographs, actually taken on the spot within hours of various foiled escape attempts being discove r ed . S om e ti me s t hey are pictures of the stable door after the horse has fled successfully over the distant border. They were taken between the years 1941 and 1944 by Johannes Lange, a local Colditz town photographer of weddings and christ en ing s, de put ed by th e Thi rd Reich to record what the war's most persistent escapologists were up to....Lange's persistent camera also recorded escape equipment ingeniously devised by the backroom boys, from a compass in a walnut shell to a gl ider wh ich was mer cifu lly sa ved from the ultimate test of the launch pad by the end of the war. The stories are desperate and amazing, funny and tragic by turns, but always exciting. (This book) is also a tribute to the ingenuity and invi ncib ility of the huma n sp irit. How did the great Australian pioneer aviatior, Charles Kingsford-Smith, leave such a trail of death behind him when he disappared in 'Lady Southern Cross' in 1935? How did the pilots of the Fairey Postal Mono-plane in 1929 know that they were going to die? Why did so many of the first women who tried to emulate Lindbergh's solo flight across the Atlantic disappear in mysterious circumstances? What was the jinx that befell Stratocruiser propellers in the 1950s, and was it a coincidence that two Stratocruiser captains met in mid-Atlantic on Christmas Day 1957? What was the strange link between the Comet take-off accidents and the Comets that exploded in mid-air? Many flying mysteries of the past have since been explained by the advance of technology, but many remain, particularly those connected to time, coincidence and precognition of events. None of the aircraft disasters described in this book, which have taken place this century in uncertain and even mysterious circumstances, have ever been fully eplained."
